Description

SPECIFICATION Take-out mechanism for newly-moulded articles for glassware This invention is concerned with a take-out mechanism operable to remove newlymoulded articles of glassware from a mould, the take-out mechanism comprising a support, an arm mounted on the support for pivotal movement about a first horizontal axis of the mechanism, gripping means mounted on the arm for pivotal movement about a second horizontal axis of the mechanism, the gripping means being operable to grip an article of glassware and to subsequently release it, and moving means operable to turn the arm about the first horizontal axis so that the gripping means is moved between an article-gripping position thereof in which the gripping means can grip an article in a mould and an articlereleasing position thereof in which the gripping means can release the article away from the mould.
Take-out mechanisms as described above are used in glassware container manufacturing machines of the so-called "individual section" type to remove newly-moulded containers from a mould and position them on a deadplate for subsequent removal from the mas chine. The arm of the take-out mechanism is turned through approximately 180 about the first horizontal axis to move the gripping means from its article-gripping position to its article-releasing position and is then turried in the opposite direction to return the gripping means to its article-gripping position.Since the containers are in an upright position In the mould and need to be positioned in an upright position on the dead plate and also in order to avoid damage to the containers as they are transferred from the mould to the deadplate, the gripping means is pivoted about the second horizontal axis of the mechanisms as the arm is turned about the first horizontal axis so that the container gripped by the gripping means is maintained in the upright position throughout the movement.
This means that the gripping means also pivots athrough 180 about the second axis as the arm pivots about the first axis. In order to cause this pivoting of the gripping means about the second axis, one of two alternative types of turning means is provided. In one type of turning means, a toothed gear secured to the gripping means and rotatable about the second horizontal axis meshes with a chain contained within the arm which claim also meshes with a gear mounted for rotation about the first horizontal axis and fixed to the arm. As the arm turns about the first axis, the chain causes the gripping means to pivot about the second axis. In the second type of turning means, the chain is replaced by an idler gear mounted on the arm. In both types of turning means, the accuracy of the mechanism is affected by backlash between the gears and the chain.Furthermore, with the chain-type of turning means, the accuracy may be effected by strengthening of the chain.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a take-out mechanism in which the accuracy of the mechanism is not affected by backlash.
The invention provides a take-out mechanism operable to remove newly-moulded articles of glassware from a mould, the take-out mechanism comprising a support, an arm mounted on the support for pivotal movement about a first horizontal axis of the mechanism, gripping means mounted on the arm for pivotal movement about a second horizontal axis of the mechanism, the gripping means being operable to grip an article of glassware and to subsequently release it, moving means operable to turn the arm about a first horizontal axis so that the gripping means is moved between an article-gripping position thereof in which the gripping means can grip an article in the mould and an article-releasing positon thereof in which the gripping means can release the article away from the mould, and a link pivotally mounted on a third horizontal axis of the mechanism which is carried by the support and on a fourth horizontal axis which is carried by the gripping means, the distance between the first and the third axes being substantially equal to the distance between the second and the fourth axes and the distance between the first and the second axes being substantially equal to the distance between the third and the fourth axes.
In a take-out mechanism in accordance with the last preceding paragraph, the link serves as the turning means to turn the gripping means about the second axis as required. This turning means does not involve any gears or chains and is therefore not subject to backlash. Furthermore, the mechanism is simpler and more reliable than existing take-out mechanisms.
The arm of a take-out mechanism in accordance with the invention may contain bores through which operating fluid under pressure is supplied to the gripping means. This arrangement is possible as the arm does not need to contain gears or a chain.
There now follows a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a take-out mechanism which is illustrative of the invention. It is to be understood that the illustrative take-out mechanism has been selected for description by way of example and not of limitation of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side-elevational view of the illustrative take-out mechanism; Figure 2 is a side-elevational view, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of the illustrative take-out mechanism, showing the mechanism in an intermediate position thereof: and Figure 3 is a front elevational view, partly in section, of the illustrative take-out mechanism on the same scale as Fig. 2.
The illustrative take-out mechanism is intended for use with a glass container manufacturing machine of the so-called individual section type and is operable to remove newlymoulded articles of glassware from a mould (not shown) of the machine. The illustrative take-out mechanism comprises a support 2 which is arranged to be mounted on the framework (not shown) of the machine in a position between the mould and the dead plate of the machine. The support 2 may be adjusted heightwise of the machine to ensure that the take-out mechanism is aligned with the mould.
The illustrative take-out mechanism also comprises an arm 4 which is mounted on the support 2 for pivotal movement about a first horizontal axis 6 of the mechanism. The arm 4 is fixed to the axis near one end of the arm 4 so that the turning of the axis 6 causes the arm 4 to swing in an horizontal arc about the axis 6. A gear (not shown) is also attached to the axis 6 within a cylindrical housing 8 of the support 2. This gear is meshed with a rack (not shown) driven by a piston and a cylinder assembly (not shown) of conventional construction which forms moving means operable to turn the arm about the axis 6. Operation of the piston and cylinder assembly causes vertical movement of the rack and therefore turning movement of the gear and axis 6 and therefore of the arm 4.
The illustrative take-out mechanism also comprises gripping means 10 mounted on the arm 4 for pivotal movement about a second horizontal axis 1 2of the mechanism. The gripping means 10 comprises a cylindrical housing 14 which is pivotal about the axis 12. The gripping means 10 also comprises 3 pairs of tongs 1 6 which are carried by the housing 14 and are operable by a piston and cylinder assembly (not shown) of conventional construction housed within the housing 14.
The pairs of tongs 1 6 are of conventional construction and each is operable by the piston and cylinder assembly to grip an article of glassware and to subsequently release it. The arrangement is such that turning of the arm 4 about the axis 6 by the moving means is effective to move the gripping means 10 between an article-gripping position thereof (not shown) in which the tongs 1 6 can grip articles in moulds of the machine and an article-releasing position (shown in Fig. 1) in which the tongs 1 6 can release the articles away from the moulds on to a deadplate of the machine. The article-gripping position of the gripping means is reached by rotating the arm 4 through approximately 180 about the axis 6 in an anti-clockwise direction (viewing Fig. 1) and the gripping means is returned to its article-releasing position by a rotation about the axis 6 in the opposite direction.
The illustrative take-out mechanism also comprises turning means operable to turn the gripping means 10 about the axis 1 2 as the arm 4 is turned about the axis 6 so that the gripping means 10 remains in vertical alignment as do articles carried by the gripping means 10. Figs. 2 and 3 show the illustrative take-out mechanism in an intermediate position approximately halfway between the article-gripping position of the gripping means 10 and the article-releasing position thereof in which the arm 4 points vertically upwards. In these figures, it can be seen that the tongs 16 are still in horizontal alignment and the gripping means 10 as a whole is in vertical alignment as it is in its article-gripping and article-releasing positions. This turning means comprises a link 18 whichiw. pivotally mounted on a third horizontal axis 20 of the mechanism which is carried by the support 2 and on a fourth horizontal axis 22 which is carried by the gripping means 10. The axis 20 is carried by a bracket 24 which projects forwardly from the support 2 beneath the arm 4; while the axis 22 is carried by a downward projection 26 of the gripping means 10, the gripping means 10 having a rearward projection which forms the axis 1 2. The arrangement is such that the distance between the first 6 and the third 20 axes is substantially equal to the distance between the second 1 2 and the fourth 22 axes and the distance between the first 6 and the second 1 2 axes is substantially equal to the distance between the third 20 and the fourth 22 axes. Thus, the four axes 6, 12, 20 and 22 are arranged at the corners of a parallelogram and it can be seen that the fourth axis 22 will always remain directly beneath the second axis 1 2 and that therefore the article-gripping-means 10 will remain in vertical alignment.
The gripping means 10 is operated by hydraulic fluid under pressure supplied thereto through a bore 26 contained within the arm 4. The bore 26 communicates with a bore 28 in the first axis 6 which in turn communicates with a supply pipe (not shown) contained within the support 2. The bore 26 also communicates with an annular spaced 28 formed between bearings 30 on which the axis 1 2 turns. The annular space 28 communicates through radial bores 32 with a longitudinal bore 34 in the axis 1 2 which communicates with the piston and cylinder assembly of the gripping means 10. Since the arm 4 of the illustrative take-out mechanism does not contain gears or chains as is the case with conventional take-out mechanisms there is room in the arm for the bore 26 and indeed for several such bores, In modifications of the illustrative take-out mechanism, the link 1 8 can be constructed as a hollow housing contaning pipes for operating fluid for the gripping means.
The illustrative take-out mechanism is of simple construction and is not subject to problems caused by backlash between gears or between gears and chains.
