Abstract

A container 10 e.g. an aerosol container, having a contents release button at one end, has a collar 15 which is a snap fit over a peripheral rim of the container. Angularly spaced internal formations 18 on the collar wall 16b cooperate with the container rim 13 and angularly spaced outward strengthening ribs 20 are formed in the collar which has a central aperture to permit access to the button. The collar is mainly for decorative purposes. Formations 18 are formed by bending or stamping inwardly the material of wall 16b. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to containers and parts thereof This invention relates to containers and parts thereof.
According to one aspect of this invention a container includes a collar adjacent an end thereof, the collar and container having cooperable formations engageable with a snap action.
The formation may comprise a peripheral rim on a container body, and one or more inward projections on the collar.
There may be a plurality of equi-angularly spaced projections.
The or each projection may be circumferentially extending.
The or each projection may be formed by deforming material of the collar.
The collar may have a central aperture at its outer end to permit access to an operating button controlling egress of the contents of the container.
According to another aspect of this invention a collar for a container has a side wall and one or more formations extending inwardly from the side wall for cooperating with a snap action with formations on a container.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a section on the line 1-1 of Fig.
2; Figure 2 is an axial view from above of a collar for a container; and Figure 3 is a diagrammatic longitudinal section of a container, collar and cap.
An aluminium container or can 10 is of the so-called aerosol or pressurized type including an axial manually operable button 11 controlling a valve (not shown); and has a shaped top 1 2 including peripheral curved portion 13.
Depression of the button 11 releases the contents of the container in a spray, in known manner.
The container 10 is provided with a collar 15, adjacent one end thereof, mainly for decorative purposes. In the past the collar has been a close interference fit (e.g. 0.1 mm) over the top of the container 10 and this has required a mechanical power press to push the collar into position. This is slow.
In the present arrangement the collar engages on the can body by a snap action and this enables the collar to be applied or fitted by hand, much quicker than using a power press.
The collar 1 5 has a shaped annular side wall 1 6 and a top wall 1 7 which is open at the centre to allow the button 11 to extend there-through.
The lower part 1 6a of the side wall or skirt 1 6 in the asssmbled condition (Fig. 3) is a close fit over the body of the can. The upperpart 1 6b of the side wall 1 6 is provided with at last one inwardly directed formation 1 8 which engages over the curved rim portion 1 3 with a snap action.
In the arrangement shown there are three equi-angularly spaced formations 18, each horizontal or circumferentially extending in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the collar. The formations 18 are formed by bending or stamping inwardly the material of wall 1 6b. The wall 1 6b is formed with three equi-angularly spaced axially extending strengthening ribs 20 formed by bending or stamping outwardly material of wall 1 6b.
In the arrangement shown the ribs or projections 18 are mid-way between adjacent ribs 20 but this is not essential.
The assembly is completed by a removable cup-shaped cap 21 slidable on the collar for covering and protecting the button 11 when the container is not in use.
1. A container comprising a collar adjacent an end thereof, the collar and container having cooperable formations engageable with a snap action.
2. A container as claimed in claim 1, in which the formations comprise a peripheral rim on a body of the container, and one or more inward projections on the collar.
3. A container as claimed in claim 2, in which there are a plurality of equiangular projections.
4. A container as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, in which the or each projection extends circumferentially.
5. A container as claimed in any of claims 2 to 4, in which the or each projection is formed by deforming material of the collar.
6. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the collar has a central aperture at its outer end to permit access to an operating button controlling egress of the contents of the container.
7. A pressurized container as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, having a control operating button at said end.
8. A container substantially as herein before described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
9. A collar for a container, the collar having a side wall, and one or more formations extending inwardly from the side wall for cooperating with a snap action with formations on a container.
1 0. A collar for a container and substantially as herein before described with reference to and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
