Abstract

A garment seam and method of forming it, wherein the seam joins two pieces 1, 2 of material by welding, the first piece 1 being folded on itself and lying face-to-face on part of the second piece 2 so that an area of triple thickness is formed, through which the weld is applied. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Garment seam This invention relates to a garment seam.
In the manufacture of waterproof sportswear it is important that the garment should be lightweight, especially when intended for use in sports such as golf where there is considerable movement involved. This requirement has led to the use of lightweight laminates having, for example a polyurethane coating on a polyester substrate. The substrate provides strength for the material while the coating renders it waterproof.
Hitherto, however, it has been a problem to join pieces of the laminate together in a satisfactory manner, as the polyurethane coating is very thin and difficult to weld into a strong joint.
According to the present invention there is provided a garment seam joining two pieces of material, wherein one of the pieces is folded on itself to provide an area of double thickness, and the other piece lies on the area of double thickness and is welded thereto so that the weld extends from said other piece through the area of double thickness to provide a three-ply welded area.
Preferably the three-ply welded area is stitched through for additional strength. Preferably also the area of double thickness is at an edge portion of the piece of material, and the other piece is welded to it at its edge portion.
The seam may be reinforced by fixing means, for example by stitching which passes through the three-ply welded area.
The seam is especially effective when at least one of the pieces of material is in the form of a composite of a flexible substrate and a heatmeltable material. In such a case the weld may be formed by melting the heat-meltable material so as to allow the melt to contact the other piece of material; on cooling, the heat-meltable material solidifies and forms the weld without the need for external welding material. If the flexible material is liquid-permeable the melt can pass through it, forming an excellent weld through the interstices of the flexible material on solidifying.
The seam of this invention can be employed to advantage on waterproof garments, for example waterproof sportswear such as golf jackets and fishing jackets, which are made of a laminate of a fabric, which may be either natural or synthetic material, coated on at least one face with thermoplastic material. An example of such a laminate is a woven polyester substrate coated on one face with polyurethane.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a method of forming a garment seam, comprising folding upon itself a piece of material thereby to form an area of double thickness, placing a further piece of material in face-to-face relationship on said area of double thickness to provide an area of triple thickness, and welding together the pieces of material in the area of triple thickness to form a three-ply welded area.
Preferably both pieces of material comprise a liquid-permeable substrate and the welding is performed by melting thermoplastic material on the area of triple thickness so as to permeate through the pieces of material.
Preferably also the welding is performed by passing a current through the area of triple thickness between a pair of electrodes at least one of which is isolated from the material by barrier material, for example "Elephant hide" or polytetrafluorethylene, to prevent short-circuiting between the electrodes.
The weld is preferably formed with the simultaneous application of pressure to the area of triple thickness.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional side view through a seam of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view of apparatus in use in welding a seam of this invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 , two pieces 1, 2 of waterproof lightweight material sold under the Trade Name SPRAY and consisting of a polyurethane coating 3 on one face of a perforate polyester substrate 4, are to be joined together to form part of a waterproof sportswear garment.
The substrate has a weight of 50 grams per square metre and the polyurethane coating 85 grams per square metre.
The first piece 1 is folded over on itself adjacent its edge to form a double thickness area 1 A, 1 B with the polyurethane coating outermost, and the second piece 2 is laid along the lower fold 1 B with the coatings 3 adjacent one another. The double thickness area 1 A, 1 B is 1 cm in length. The edges 5 of the pieces 1, 2 are then end-stitched to hold them together during preparation of welding.
The pieces 1, 2 are then placed in a welding machine having electrodes such as those shown in Fig. 2. The electrodes 6, 7 are of brass and the lower electrode 7 has two barrier layers of "Elephant hide" 8 and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) 9 to reduce the "flashing" effect when current is passed between the electrodes.
With the pieces 1, 2 of material in position, a current of high-frequency or radio-frequency radiation is passed between the electrodes 6, 7, melting the three layers of polyurethane 3 on the material 1 A, 1 B and 2 and welding all three layers together through the two layers of polyester substrate 4.
The barrier layers 8, 9 are very important since without them the current can easily short-circuit between the electrodes 6, 7, causing damage to the material being welded by localised perforation.
Such damage reduces the strength of the weld and detracts from the waterproof nature of the seam.
A stitch 10 is then run along the weld about 2 mm from the fold of the first piece 1, for added strength.
The welded seam thus produced is strong and unobtrusive. Strength derives from the relatively long surface area of the weld and also from the direction of the welded seam which maximises resistance to the weld failing under forces applied in the direction A. The depth of weld is also maximised, which is an important feature when dealing with lightweight materials where the heatmeltable coating is very thin. Conventional welds do not extend through three layers of the coating and do not therefore produce the same strength of weld.
A further advantage of the weld of this embodiment of the invention is that it lies flat along the plane of the material. Previously-known welds produce a seam extending in a plane normal to that of the material.
