Abstract
A line retrieval device comprises a soft tyred reeling pulley 4 driven by gearing 7, 8 and 9 from a winding handle 5 and a pinch pulley 14, also with a soft tyre 15, which is mounted on a spring loaded arm 13 to be normally urged towards the reeling pulley 4 to pinch the line between them for retrieval but to be manually releasable for casting and for other requirements. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fishing aid
This invention relates to fishing aids.
When casting a line, it is normal for a considerable length of line, for example 30 m, to be freed from a reel before casting so as to have sufficient line free to complete the cast. After casting, the fly, bait or lure is drawn back or retrieved. This is normally done by hand since reeling in would necessitate unreeling before casting again and this would be very inconvenient and time-consuming. Retrieval by hand, even using two hands gives rise to intermittent motion of the fly, bait or lure. The line so retrieved is either deposited on the ground or in a line stripping basket.
The present invention is intended to provide a device for retrieving the line with a steady motion since it is believed that a fly, bait or lure moving steadily through the water is more attractive, or possibly less suspicious, to a fish than one which is moving intermittently or in jerks.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a device for mounting directly or indirectly on a rod, e.g. forward of a handgrip or on a reel itself mounted on the rod, the said device comprising a manually rotatable reeling pulley and a freely rotatable pinch pulley adapted to be loaded against the pulley whereby the line may be clamped between the reeling pulley and the pinch pulley for retrieval by manual rotation of the reeling pulley at a controlled speed.
The pinch and reeling pulleys preferably have soft rubber or other elastomeric surfaces in engagement. The pinch pulley is preferably spring loaded against the reeling pulley and may be manually released to engage or release the line from between the pulleys.
The reeling pulley is preferably driven through gearing from a winding handle, conveniently to increase the rotational speed.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred form of device in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view, partially in section, of the device of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view looking from the right of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view looking from the left of Figure 1.
As illustrated in the drawings, the device has a housing attached to a back plate 2. This latter has a fixing flange 2a provided with screw holes 2b.
Both the casing 1 and the back plate 2 have a cutaway illustrated at 3 in Figure 1 so that a reeling pulley 4 protrudes from the casing.
A manual winding handle 5 with a freely rotatable knob 6 is mounted on the casing 1 and is
drivably connected to a large gear wheel 7. In one
example, the gear wheel 7 has sixty teeth. The
gear wheel drives a smaller idler 8, also rotatably
mounted on the casing 1, and this idler 8 in turn meshes with and drives a gear wheel 9 solid with the pulley 4. In a specific example, the idler 8 and gear wheel 9 may each have twenty teeth so that there is a 3 to 1 speed increase between the gear wheel 7 and the idler 8, and a 1 to 1 drive from the idler 8 to the gear wheel 9 and pulley 4. The pulley 4 is preferably provided with a soft rubber or other elastomer outer surface or tyre 11.
An arm 13 is pivotably mounted on the back plate 2 and carries a pinch pulley 14, also provided with a soft rubber tyre, and which is freely rotatable on the arm 1 3. The pinch pulley also has an inclined flange 1 5. The arm 13 is mounted on the back plate 2 with inter-position of a spring 1 6 which biases the arm in a clockwise direction as illustrated in Figure 1 so that the pinch pulley is spring urged against the reeling pulley 4.
The arm 1 3 may be manually moved against the action of the spring to free the pinch pulley from the reeling pulley, and this movement is limited by a pin 1 7 engaging a stop surface 1 8 on the back plate and/or casing.
In operation, after casting, the arm 13 is biased against the spring to open the bight between the pinch pulley and the reeling pulley, and the line is introduced into this bight. The arm is then released so that the line is gripped and retrieval of the line can then be achieved by rotation of the handle 5 to drive the reeling pulley 4 through the gearing described. Since the line is pinched between the pinch pulley 14 and the reeling pulley, it is pulled in at the peripheral speed of the reeling pulley, and this is controlled by the speed of rotation of the handle 5.
Should there be a bite, or should the line become fouled on an obstruction, the comparatively light biasing of the pinch pulley against the reeling pulley will allow the line to slip before its breaking strain is reached, and in these circumstances, the fisherman will rapidly release the line from the bight between the pinch pulley 14 and the reeling pulley 4 by movement of the arm.
The line retrieved will, as is normal, be either deposited on the ground or into a line stripping basket.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.

A line retrieving device for mounting directly or indirectly on a fishing rod, the said device comprising a manually rotatable reeling pulley and a freely rotatable pinch pulley adapted to be loaded against the pulley whereby the line may be clamped between the reeling pulley and the pinch pulley for retrieval by manual rotation of the reeling pulley at a controlled speed.
2. A line retrieving device as claimed in claim 1, in which the pinch and reeling pulleys have soft elastomeric surfaces in engagement.
3. A line retrieving device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the pinch pulley is spring loaded against the reeling pulley and manually releasable.
4. A line retrieving device as claimed in claims
