Abstract

Attachments f o r screwing and tapping. -A holder for taps and like tools of the type in which radial driving keys are adapted to slip on overload, has means for discontinuing the drive when a required length of thread has been cut and means for removing the tool quickly from the work when it is being withdrawn. The holder 1, provided with a key 3 and a set screw 2<1> for engaging the tool, is driven by clutch teeth 1<a> from a sliding sleeve 4 pressed into engagement by a spring 14. An adjustable member 9, slidably keyed to the holder, carries pins 13 which partially separate the clutch teeth when it meets the work. The clutch teeth are bevelled on one side only so that they will slip in the driving direction but will engage in the reversed direction for withdrawing the tap. The sleeve 4 is driven by bevelled grooves 4<1> and radial keys 5 pressed outwards by a spring-loaded plunger 7, the spring load being adjustable by means of a nut 10. The end of the plunger is shaped to give a reduced end thrust on the keys when these are in the retracted position. On withdrawing the tool, the parts 1, 6 separate and a spring 17 is compressed so that when the tool leaves the work it will be lifted quickly by the spring.
