Abstract
In shortening a scroll calendar (12) to retain decorative portion (16), a thread-retaining band of adhesive tape (10) is stuck down across the back of the scroll immediately adjacent to an end portion (14) to be removed. Threads (18), which secure wooden strips (20) of the scroll, are then severed to release the end portion. The endmost two strips (22) and (24) are then folded back-to-back and the two strips secured adhesively into a slot in a spare end bead (26). The calendar (12), the spare end bead (26), and instructions for shortening the calendar, can be presented as a pack. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Scroll calendars
A kind of article has become very popular which has a decorative illustration as well as a calendar printed on to a front surface of a scroll. The scroll is essentially made up from a large number of narrow strips laid side-by-side and woven together by threads extending along the scroll; the strips extend transversely of the length of the scroll, allowing it to be rolled up. At each end of the scroll, at least the endmost strip is secured to an end bead.
Such an article is referred to hereinafter as a scroll calendar. The strips may be of compressed fir wood chippings. The end beads may also be of wood.
Many scroll calendars are most attractively decorated and are arranged with the printed calendar towards one end only of the scroll.
When the year to which the printed calendar relates has ended, it would be pleasing to be able to cut off that end portion printed with the calendar, keeping the remainder simply for decorative purposes. However, it one were simply to cut off a length from the scroll, the unsecured threads would allow the remaining portion of the scroll to fall apart.
In one of its aspects the invention provides a pack comprising a scroll calendar, a spare end bead, and means arranged to direct a user to secure adhesively a thread-retaining band across the scroll immediately adjacent to an end portion to be removed from the scroll in shortening the scroll, to sever the threads immediately adjacent to said band in order to release said end portion from the remainder of the scroll, and to secure at least the end most strip of said remainder to the spare end bead.
In another of its aspects the invention provides a method of shortening a scroll calendar comprising the steps:
(i) securing adhesively a thread-retaining band across the scroll immediately adjacent to an end portion to be removed from the scroll,
(ii) severing the threads immediately adjacent to said band in order to release said end portion from the remainder of the scroll, and
(iii) securing at least the end most strip of said remainder to the spare end bead.
After releasing the end portion, in shortening the scroll, the two endmost strips of said remainder may be superimposed and the double thickness of strip so provided secured (e.g.
by an adhesive) in a slot in the spare end bead.
The retaining band, which can conveniently comprise an adhesive tape, serves to secure the threads and the end most strip or strips and prevent the wanted remainder of the scroll falling apart. Alternatively, one or more strips of the end portion to be removed might themselves be used as the retaining band.
Said means arranged to direct a user can conveniently comprise printed instructions on packaging or a leaflet.
There now follows a description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a scroll calendar pack and its use which illustrate the invention by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates steps in the shortening of a scroll from a pack; and
Figure 2 shows an end portion of the shortened scroll.
As instructed by printed instructions on a leaflet of a scroll calendar pack, a user secures a thread-retaining band in the form of a length of adhesive tape 10 across the scroll calendar 1 2 of the pack immediately adjacent to the end portion 14 to be removed from the wanted remainder 1 6 of the scroll. The tape 10 is secured to the reverse side of the scroll, as shown in Fig. 1, opposite to that on which decorative matter which is to be retained is printed. Having secured the tape 10, to retain threads 1 8 which secure wooden strips 20 of the scroll, the threads are then severed immediately adjacent to the band to release the end portion 14.
The end most strip 22 of the wanted remainder 1 6 is then folded back (Fig. 2) so as to become back-to-back with the endmost-butone strip 24, and the two strips 22 and 24 secured adhesively into a longitudinally-extending slot in a spare end bead 26 of the pack.
1. A pack comprising a scroll calendar, a spare end bead, and means arranged to direct a user to secure adhesively a thread-retaining band across the scroll immediately adjacent to an end portion to be removed from the scroll in shortening the scroll, to sever the threads immediately adjacent to said band in order to release said end portion from the remainder of the scroll, and to secure at least the end most strip of said remainder to the spare end bead.
2. A pack according to claim 1 in which said spare end bead is longitudinally slotted to receive a double strip thickness in securing said remainder thereto.
3. A method of shortening a scroll calendar comprising the steps:
(i) securing adhesively a thread-retaining band across the scroll immediately adjacent to an end portion to be removed from the scroll,
(ii) severing the threads immediately adjacent to said band in order to release said end portion from the remainder of the scroll, and
(iii) securing at least the endmost strip of said remainder to the spare end bead.
4. A method according to claim 3 in which the two end most strips of said remainder are superimposed and the double thickness of strip so provided secured in a slot in said spare end bead.
5. A method according to either of claims
