Abstract
Oxidized fatty acids are separated from unoxidized fatty acids by extracting a solution of the mixture in ethyl or methyl alcohol with a fatty acid solvent in which the oxidized acid is insoluble. Solvents specified are petroleum, benzine, benzene, toluene, xylene, and turpentine. The mixtures may be produced, for example, by oxidizing linseed oil fatty acids by oxygen, or by decomposing a soap of oxidized linseed oil by means of dilute sulphuric acid. The separated oxidized acids may be used in the production of varnish and in place of strongly oxidized oils.
