Abstract

A composition suitable for inhibiting the formation of ice on an exposed surface and of shedding ice from the surface includes a mixture in the form of a jelly which includes 1 part by weight of a soluble polyamide, 3-8 parts by weight of an alcohol having a molecular weight less than 100, 3-8 parts by weight of a glycol and 3-8 parts by weight of water.

Description

SPECIFICATION Ice inhibiting compositions The present invention relates to compositions which inhibit the formation of ice on exposed surfaces in icing conditions.
The accumulation of ice on exterior surfaces of aircraft, in particular helicopters, is an undesirable consequence of exposure to freezing conditions. The formation of ice on these surfaces can result in a loss in performance of a helicopter because of an increase in drag produced by the ice and because of the additional weight of the ice. A further hazard which may arise is that of large pieces of accumulated ice being shed from a surface when the helicopter is in flight. The discarded ice may strike aerials attached to the helicopter or the ice may become ingested by the engines, causing damage to the turbine blades. Thus it is important to remove accumulated ice from a helicopter whilst it is on the ground prior to flight.
The formation of ice on an exposed surface may be inhibited by means of an anti-icing composition containing a solid freezing point depressant which rapidly dissolves in moisture impinging on the surface and consequently prevents the moisture from freezing. Anti-icing compositions are known and examples of these are disclosed in UK Patent 1,555,916.
Alternatively accumulated ice may be shed from the exposed surface by means of a deicing composition. De-icing compositions are known and examples include those disclosed in UKPA 8013560. However the known deicing compositions have the disadvantages of being difficult to apply to a surface and of being embrittled by low temperatures. Moreover the known compositions are not as effective as is desired.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a composition which is suitable for inhibiting the formation of ice on exposed surfaces and which is also for shedding ice from the surface.
According to the present invention a composition suitable for inhibiting the formation of ice on an exposed surface, and of shedding ice from the surface, includes a mixture in the form of a jelly which includes a soluble polyamide, a low molecular weight alcohol, a glycol and water.
It is preferred that the soluble polyamide is a methoxymethyl nylon such as Calaton (trade name) made by ICI.
By low molecular weight alcohol is meant an alcohol having a molecular weight less than 100. Suitable low molecular weight alcohols include methanol and ethanol, but any low molecular weight alcohol which is capable of dissolving methoxy-methyl nylon may be incorporated in the composition, The glycol may be ethylene glycol or propylene gycol, the glycol being included in the composition to reduce the volatility of the composition and increase its effective life.
Preferably the composition includes: methoxy-methyl nylon 1 part by weight alcohol 3-8 parts by weight glycol 3-8 parts by weight water 3-8 parts by weight The hardness of the composition may be varied according to requirements by altering the proportions of the ingredients incorporated in the composition.
The compositions of the present invention may be spread over a surface for which protection from ice is required. Being in the form of a jelly the compositions may be spread with ease and may be used in thick coatings or thin coatings without impairing the effectiveness of the composition. Moreover the physical characteristics of the compositions of the present invention are little affected by changes in temperature.
It has been found that although ice forms on the surface of the spread composition, the ice has a very low adhesion to the composition so that it is possible to remove the ice with ease. Moreover it has been found that using the compositions of the present invention accumulations of ice may be removed much more speedily than with the known iceinhibiting compositions.
The compositions according to the present invention may be prepared by heating the ingredients under reflux until the nylon has dissolved and allowing the composition to cool.
As an Example of the present invention the preferred composition includes: methoxy-methyl nylon 1 part by weight methanol 6 parts by weight propylene glycol 6 parts by weight water 6 parts by weight
