Abstract
The clip comprises two parts (A, B) which respectively carry serrated coupling elements (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) at each end thereof for connecting the two parts together around a hosepipe. The coupling elements are disengageable by sideways movement relative to each other. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Clip for securing hosepipes and like uses
This invention relates to a clip and more particularly a hose clip for securing hosepipes and like uses.
This invention is applicable advantageously, but not exclusively, to a releasable clip described in patent specification No. 1 600 601, which clip comprises a band for encircling the hose or other article to be secured, the band carrying complementary coupling elements of a ratchet coupling for connecting ends of the band and drawing them together to contract the clip, the coupling elements consisting of a serrated tongue on one end of the band and a pair of serrated jaws on the other end of the band, which jaws define a jaw mouth through which the tongue is insertible in its longitudinal direction tip first into the jaws, the tongue having serrations on opposite sides thereof adapted to interlock with the serrations of the jaws respectively and thereby form a double bond holding the inserted tongue to prevent withdrawal movement thereof in its longitudinal direction, the tongue and jaws being moveable relative to each other sideways such that the inserted tongue is disengageable sideways from the jaws to release the clip. The coupling elements, or either of them such as particularly the jaws element, will possess sufficient inherent resilient yieldabilityto allow the tips of the serrations to pass over one another to enable the serrations to be brought into interlocking relation.
1 ) According to the present invention a releasable clip for securing an article or articles such as a hosepipe comprises:
a) a band for encircling the article or articles to be secured;
b) the band carrying complementary serrated coupling elements of a ratchet coupling for connecting ends of the band and drawing them together to contract the clip with the serrations of the coupling elements in interlocking engagement;
c) the coupling elements when interlocked being disengageable by movement relative to each other sideways to release and open the clip;
d) the band being constructed of two component parts which respectively carry the coupling elements at one end thereof and which are furnished with means for connecting the two parts together, preferably detachably, in series at their other end.
2) In the clip specified in paragraph numbered 1 above as applied to a clip described in specification No. 1 600 601 one of the two parts of the band carries the serrated tongue and the other part of the band carries the serrated jaws.
3) In the clip specified in either paragraph 1 or 2 the connecting means referred to in (d) consist of a second set of complementary serrated coupling elements of a second ratchet coupling.
4) In the clip according to paragraph 3 the two sets of coupling elements are of identical form each with the other.
5) In the clip according to paragraph 4 each part of the band carries one coupling element of one ratchet coupling at one end thereof and carries the complementary coupling element of the other ratchet coupling at its other end.
6) The clip according to paragraph 5 formed of two identical halves.
7) In the clip according to any one of paragraphs 1 to 6 the two parts of the band together with the coupling elements carried thereby are respectively formed as one-piece mouldings of a plastics material.
8) The clip according to any one of paragraphs 1 to 7 is provided with grips associated with the coupling elements to facilitate pressing them into interlocking engagement manually or with the aid of a suitable tool.
In the accompanying drawing, Figs. 1 and 2 are views at right angles to one another of a preferred embodiment of clip according to the invention, given by way of example, and
Fig. 3 shows a detail of the clip on a larger scale.
Referring to the drawing, the clip shown comprises two identical halves A and B (shown separated) each formed as a one-piece moulding of a suitable flexible plastics material. Each half A or B provides a band half 1 a or 1 b which carries at its ends complementary tongue coupling elements 2a or 2b and jaws coupling elements 3a or 3b of ratchet couplings 2a, 3b or 3a, 2b of the kind described in specification No. 1 600 601. Each tongue coupling element has a root portion 4a or 4b from which extends the tongue 5a or 5b provided on its opposite sides with serrations 6a or 6b and 7a or 7b. Each jaws coupling element has a root portion 8a or 8b from which the two jaws 9a or 9b and 1 Oa or 1 Ob extend as forklike branches.The jaw 9a or 9b has serrations 1 a or 1 b for interlocking with the tongue serrations 6a or 6b and the jaw 1 Oa or 1 Ob has serrations 1 2a or 1 2b for interlocking with the tongue serrations 7a or 76.
Extending as they do from the root portion 8a or 8b the jaws 9a or 9b and 1 Oa or 1 Ob have sufficient inherent resilience to yield to the tongue 5a or 5b when inserted through the jaws mouth 1 3a or 1 3b and to return to interlock the serrations 6a or 6b with 1 a or 1 b and 7a or 7b with 1 2a or 1 2b. The root portions 4a or 4b and 8a or 8b may have surface rib grips (not shown) to facilitate gripping the coupling elements 2a, 3b and 3a, 2b when closing the clip halves together.
To open the clip when closed, the then interlocked coupling elements are grasped and moved relative to each other in opposite directions sideways (perpendicular to the plane of the drawing) to disengage the coupling elements sideways.
Making a clip in two parts or halves as described in accordance with the present invention has an advantage in facilitating fitting of such clip around a hose or other article or articles to be secured, which facility is especially useful in the cases of the smaller sizes of clip. A further advantage in cases of clips furnished with two sets of coupling elements (two ratchet couplings) as described above is that the range of sizes (diameters) of hoses or other articles which a given clip is capable of encircling is substantially increased, and in effect practically doubled, since the two ratchet couplings of such clip can be operated independently of each other to control the number of serrations of the coupling elements of each coupling which are brought into interlocking engagement.
