Abstract

A bag 8 has an open end 10 larger than closed end 12. A compressible article, e.g. a sleeping bag, is packed in the bag 8, and a drawstring 20 tightened. The assembly can then be reduced in size by closing sliding fastener 18. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bags for holding compressible articles The present invention relates to a bag which facilitates compact packing of compressible articles. It is particularly but not exclusively envisaged for use with sleeping bags. However, other articles may well find an advantage in having a small packed size.
Generally a sleeping bag is carried in a cylindrical container. It is difficult to get a sleeping bag into such a container because the open end of the container restricts the pushing of the sleeping bag inside. This operation becomes even more difficult when the sleeping bag is rolled.
Furthermore, when the sleeping bag is in transit users and distributors wish its packed size to be as small as possible.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the foregoing disadvantages.
The invention accordingly provides a bag having an opening at one end, the bag being wider at the opening than at its opposite end, means for closing the opening after an article is placed in the bag, and means for reducing the girth of the bag after the opening is closed.
Preferably, the means for closing the opening comprises a drawstring.
Preferably also, the girth reducing means comprises a sliding fastener which suitably encloses a triangular gusset.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the acompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa sketch of the sleeping bag container in an open position; Figure 2 is a sketch of a rolled sleeping bag, and Figure 3 is a sketch of the sleeping bag container in a closed position In Figure 1, a sleeping bag container 8 is tapered so that the open end 10 is larger than the closed end 12. This makes iteasierto put the sleeping bag inside the container, whether the sleeping bag is stuffed in at random or, preferably, if the sleeping bag as seen at 14 is rolled up neatly and pushed in. A cord or tape loop 16 is fitted at the permanently closed end 12 of a zip 18 to facilitate closure of the zip 18 by providing a method of pulling in the opposite direction to its closing.Once the sleeping bag is inside the container 8, a drawstring 20 is tightened to keep the sleeping bag inside the container 8. The container 8 can then be compressed into a cylindrical shape as shown in Figure 3, thereby reducing the packed size of the sleeping bag. One method of achieving the compression into a cylindri cal shape is by having the two halves of a zip fastener 18 on either side of a triangular gusset 22.
The container 8 is then compressed by hand and the zip 18 is gradually closed to keep the container 8 in the compressed cylindrical shape.
1. A bag having an opening at one end, the bag being wider at the opening than at its opposite end, means for closing the opening after an article is placed in the bag, and means for reducing the girth of the bag after the opening is closed.
2. A bag according to claim 1, in which the means for closing the opening comprises a drawstring.
3. A bag according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the girth reducing means comprises a sliding fastener.
4. A bag according to claim 3, in which the sliding fastener encloses a triangular gusset.
5. A bag substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing.
