Description

SPECIFICATION A post for mounting a hand guard rail on a scaffolding platform This invention relates to a post for mounting a hand guard rail on a scaffolding platform.
Scaffolding platforms, or staging platforms as they are often called, are well known and a hand guard rail is required in order to provide safety for persons working on the platform.
The scaffolding platform also requires toe boards for ensuring that tools placed on the platform are not inadvertently kicked off the platform whereby they might injure persons beneath the platform.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a post which is of use in mounting a hand guard rail and a toe board on a scaffolding platform.
Accordingly, this invention provides a post form mounting a hand guard rail on a scaffolding platform, which post comprises a first finial which is positioned at one end of the post and which is for clamping a first elongate scaffolding member in a horizontal position and underneath the platform, and a first clamp which is movable up and down the post and which is provided with a recessed portion having a recess for receiving the lower edge of a toe board for the platform whereby the first clamp is locatable on the post such that the recessed portion engages an upper edge of the platform in order to clamp the platform between the first elongate scaffolding member and the recessed portion.
The first finial may comprise two parts which are hinged with respect to one another and which are held together by a nut and bolt arrangement. The nut of the nut and bolt arrangement of the first finial is preferably a wing nut.
The first clamp may comprise two parts which are hinged together with respect to one another and which are held together by a nut and bolt arrangement, the recessed portion having a grooved bottom portion which defines the base of the recess and which is for gripping the toe board when it is inserted in the recess. The nut of the nut and bolt arrangement of first clamp is preferably a wing nut.
Advantageously, the recessed portion has a flange which is adapted to extend into and grip the platform. This flange will preferably be positioned in use of the post alongside the first elongate scaffolding member for forming a rigid construction.
The post may include a second finial which is positioned at the other end of the post and which is for clamping a hand guard rail to the post. The second finial may be constructed similarly as the first finial so that it may comprise two parts which are hinged together with respect to one another and which are held together by a nut and bolt arrangement.
The nut of the nut and bolt arrangement of the second finial is again preferably a wing nut.
In an alternative construction of the invention, the hand guard rail need not be provided with the integral second finial and a separate clamp can be employed for clamping the hand guard rail to the post.
Preferably, the post includes a second clamp which is movable up and down the post and which is provided with a recessed portion having a recess for receiving the upper edge of the toe board for the platform whereby the second clamp is locatable on the post such that the upper edge of the toe board is positioned in the recess in the re-- cessed portion.
The second clamp may comprise two parts which are hinged together with respect to one another and which are held together by a nut and bolt arrangement, the recessed portion having an inclined bottom portion which defines the base of the recess. The nut of the nut and bolt arrangement of the second clamp is preferably a wing nut.
The scaffolding post is preferably made from a light non-rusting material such for example as an aluminium alloy.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a post.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a post 2 for mounting a hand guard rail 4 on a scaffolding platform 6. Only part of the scaffolding platform 6 is shown and it will be seen that it comprises a side member or stile 8, cross members 10 (only one of which is shown) and boards 12 mounted on the cross members 10 and between a pair of stiles 8.
The platform 8 rests on a plurality of elongate scaffolding members which are horizontally disposed and which are positioned underneath the platform. One of these elongate scaffolding members is shown as a first elongate scaffolding member 14. The post 2 is provided with a first finial 1 6 which is positioned at the lower end of the post 2 and which is for clamping to the first elongate scaffolding member 14. The first finial 1 6 comprises a first part 18 which is fixed to the post 2, usually by welding, and a second part 20 which is hinged by a pin 22 to the first part 18.The second part 20 can thus be pivotted to an open position to accommodate the first elongate scaffolding member 14 and then closed to hold the post 2 in position on the first elongate scaffolding member 14, the first finial 16 being held in its closed position by a nut and bolt arrangement (not shown) but positioned on the side of the first finial 1 6 opposite the pin 22.
The post 2 is also provided with a first clamp 24 which is movable up and down the post and which is provided with a recessed portion 26 having a recess 28 for receiving the lower edge of the toe board (not shown) for the platform. As shown in the drawing, the first clamp 24 is locatable on the post 2 such that the recessed portion 26 (and more specifically the part 30) engages the upper edge 32 of the stile 8 of the platform 6 in order to clamp the platform 6 between the first elongate scaffolding member 1 4 and the recessed portion 26. It will be seen from the drawing that the recessed portion 26 is provided with a grooved bottom portion 34 which defines the base of the recess 28 and which is for gripping the toe board when it is inserted in the recess 28.
The recessed portion 26 is also provided with a downwardly depending flange 36 which extends into the space 38 between the inside edge of the stile 8 and the adjacent edge of the first board 1 2. The flange 36 thus assists in positively and securely mounting the post 2 about the platform 6.
The first clamp 24 has a first part 40 which is secured to the recessed portion 26. A second part 42 pivots between open and closed positioned about a pin 44. The first and second parts 40, 42 are held together about the post 2 by a nut and bolt arrangement comprising a bolt 46 which pivots about a pin 48 and which is locatable in a slot 50 in the second part 42. A wing nut 52 then screws over the illustrated threaded portion of the bolt 46 to clamp the first and second parts 40, 42 firmly together about the post 2.
This nut and bolt arrangement is substantially the same as that employed for the first finial 16, the drawing showing a pin 54 in the first finial 1 6 which corresponds to the pin 48 in the first clamp 24.
The upper end of the post 2 is provided with a second finial 56. As shown, the second finial 56 comprises a first part 58 which is fixed to the post 2, usually by welding, and a second part 60 which pivots between open and closed positions on a pin 63. A nut and bolt arrangement comprising a bolt 64 and a wing nut 66 are effective to hold the first and second parts 58, 60 of the second finial 56 in their closed position about the hand guard rail 4. The nut and bolt arrangement on the second finial 56 is similar to that employed in the first finial 1 6 and in the first clamp 24 so that the bolt 64 pivots about a pin 68 and locates in a slot in the second part 60.
The post 2 is provided with a second clamp 70 which is movable up and down the post 2 and which is provided with a recessed portion 72 having a recess 74 for receiving the upper edge of the toe board for the platform. It will be apparent that the second clamp 70 is thus locatable on the post 2 such that the upper edge of the toe board is positioned in the recess 74 in the recessed portion 72, and it will be seen from the drawing that the base of the recessed portion 74 is inclined. This base can also be grooved similarly to the grooved bottom portion 34 for providing a grip on the toe board, but is unnecessary as the inclined portion forms a wedge for locking the toeboard in position.
The second clamp 70 has a first part 76 which is fixed to the recessed portion 72 and which cooperates with a second part 78 to clamp the second clamp 70 about the post 2.
The first and second parts 76, 78 are constructed substantially the same as the first and second parts 18, 20; 40, 42; and 58, 60. A threaded bolt 80 pivots about a pin 82 and is locatable in a slot 84 in the second part 78. A wing nut 86 screws over the bolt 80 to hold the first and second parts 76, 78 together about the post 2.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawing has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the second finial 56 could be replaced with a double clamp arrangement for clamping the hand guard rail 4 to the post 2.
