Abstract

A portable hand-held electronic device for recording and displaying information comprises a casing (1) having a display area (2) with a plurality of lines (2a, 2b). Keys (3) are used to enter lists which are displayed on the lines (2a, 2b). Further keys (5a, 5b) beside the respective lines (2a, 2b) are used to edit the displayed list, depression of a particular key causing deletion of the line alongside and depression of the same key a second time causing the list of entries on the lines to move upwards to fill the vacant space left by the deleted entry. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION Electronic device for recording and displaying information Field of the invention This invention relates to an electronic device for recording and displaying information, and in particular a portable hand-held device which can be used to record and display lists so as to act as an aidememoire.
Background of the invention In domestic and commercial life it is frequently necessary to compile lists which then need to be updated and revised at regular intervals. For example, items need to be added to the list or deleted from the list which should then be reformed into an updated list, possibly with certain items being accorded a priority rating. The invention aims to provide a portable hand-held electronic device (or so-called electronic "notebook") which enables items to be compiled into a list, displayed on a display area, with a facility of updating the list and displaying the updated version.
Summary of the invention According to the invention a portable handheld electronic device for recording and displaying information comprises keys for entering information, a display area for displaying entered information and means for deleting from the display area selected parts of the displayed information and for rearranging the displayed information to omit the deleted parts. the term "keys" is used in a broad sense to mean not only movable keys but touch-sensitive areas serving as keys.
The display area preferably displays the entered information on a plurality of vertically spaced lines so that the information is displayed in list form. In this case the means for deleting selected parts of the displayed information preferably comprise a second set of keys additional to the first-mentioned set for entering information. The second set of keys may be arranged in a column, each key of the second set being arranged beside a corresponding line of the plurality of vertically spaced lines of the display area. Depression of one key of the second set then preferably deletes the information in the line alongside. The arrangement may be such that if the key is pressed a second time the list of entered information is reformed to fill the vacant space left by the deleted entry.
A further key or button may be provided to allow priority ratings to be alotted to the various items of the list. Depression of this key or button then reforms the list with the items in their allotted priorities.
An electronic device according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the front panel of the device.
Detailed description of the drawing The device is a small portable batterypowdered device suitable to be carried by the user in a pocket, handbag or the like. The device comprises a casing 1 the front face of which is visible in the drawing.
The front face presents a display area 2 having a plurality of lines 2a, 2b etc. Below the display area 2 is a set of alpha numeric keys 3 and a panel 4 for other function keys.
A column of further keys 5 is arranged beside the display area 2. The keys 5 comprise keys 5a, 5b etc., aligned with the respective line 2a, 2b etc., of the display area 2.
Lists are entered into the device by using the keys 3. The lists are displayed on the lines 2a, 2b etc., on the display area 2. When an entry on one line of the display 2 is to be deleted the corresponding key 5 is depressed. If the particular key 5 is pressed a second time the list of enteries on the lines of the display 2 moves upwards to fill the vacant space left by the deleted entry. Items in the list can be accorded priority ratings by pressing a particular button or key provided on the device.
Lists of items, names, numbers or any other details which need to be remembered can be entered, displayed and kept up-to-date by use of the device which can be used for business lists, household or shopping lists phone numbers or any other information which it is desired to store.

Claims (7)

Claims
1. A portable hand-held electronic device for recording and displaying information, comprising keys for entering information, a display area for displaying entered information and means for deleting from the display area selected parts of the displayed information and for rearranging the displayed information to omit the deleted parts.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the display area displays the entered information on a plurality of vertically spaced lines so that the information is displayed in list form.
3. A device according to claim 2, wherein the means for deleting selected parts of the displayed information comprise a second set of keys additional for the first-mentioned set for entering information.
4. A device according to claim 3, wherein the second set of keys are arranged in a column, each key of the second set being arranged beside a corresponding line of the plurality of vertically spaced lines of the display area.
5. A device according to claim 4, wherein depression of one key of the second set deletes the information in the line alongside, depression of the same key a second time causing the list of entered information to be reformed to fill the vacant space left by the deleted entry.
6. A device according to claim 5, wherein a further key or button is provided to allow priority ratings to be allotted to the various items of the list, depression of this key or button reforming the list with the items in their allotted priorities.
7. A portable hand-held electronic device constructed and arranged substantially as herein particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
