Abstract

A gas-heated grill apparatus has two burner pipes (3,4) separately disconnectable from a gas supply and which have a flame gap therebetween and extend parallel to each other and which are disposed beneath a metal heat-radiating grid (2) Figure 2 (not shown) supported on the ceiling (11) of the housing (1); each burner pipe (3 or 4) having a respective row of flame nozzles (31 or 41) at the sides remote from each other and at least one crossover ignition bore (33 or 43) at the sides facing each other. Such a gas-fired grill apparatus permits a more advantageous thermal loading to be achieved with at least the same overall thermal efficiency, whereby a safeguard ensuring cross-ignition is guaranteed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A gas-fired grill apparatus The invention relates to a gas-fired grill apparatus wherein a housing contains burner pipe having at least one row of nozzles parallel to its axis and a cross-ignition safety means, is disposed beneath a metal grid supported on the ceiling of the housing, an auxiliary gas dish or shell having a substantially U-shaped cross-section is provided below the burner pipe at a distance therefrom, and wherein gas emerging from further nozzles is a space provided by the auxiliary gas shell is conducted to the flame region of the row of nozzles disposed above the dish.
Gas-fired grill apparatus of such type are known, for example, from German Gebrauchsmuster (Utility Model) No. 81 06355. Such grill apparatus are generally installed in caravans or camping vehicles or the like. A burner pipe having rows of flame nozzles at both sides is centrally disposed in the housing beneath a metal grid. An ignition safety means is provided in such a grill apparatus as claimed in German Gebrauchsmuster (Utility Model) 81 06 355, and such means always ensures that both rows of nozzles are ignited.
It is obvious that, in such gas-fired grill apparatus having a central burner pipe, the local thermal loading is relatively high, so that appropriate precautions need to be taken to keep the outside temperatures of the apparatus low in specific regions. It is necessary to keep within a maximum temperature of 100C above ambient temperature.
The invention seeks to provide a gas-fired grill apparatus of the above-described type which provides a more advantageous thermal loading with at least the same overall thermal efficiency, whilst ensuring ignition.
According to the present invention there is provided a gas-fired grill apparatus, wherein a housing is provided and contains at least two burner pipes, each pipe having at least one row of nozzles parallel to the axis thereof and an ignition safety means is disposed beneath a metal grid supported on the ceiling of the housing, an auxiliary gas dish or shell having a substantially U-shaped cross-section and is provided below each burner pipe at a distance therefrom, gas emerging from further nozzles in a space provided by the auxiliary gas shell being conducted to the flame region of the row of nozzles disposed above the shell, said apparatus being characterised by the two burner pipes being separately disconnectable and have an ignition gap therebetween and extend parallel to each other, the burner pipes each having a respective row of flame nozzles at the sides remote from each other and at least one cross-ignition bore at the sides facing each other In accordance with the invention, by arranging two burner pipes so that they can be separately disconnectable, a more advantageous distribution of heat may be achieved in the region of the heater grid and the adjacent parts of the apparatus, so that local overheating, such as was known from previous apparatus, is prevented or minimized. In such a case, the two burner pipes are provided with an ignition gap therebetween so that the two opposed crossignition bores ensure that, if both burner pipes are supplied with gas, the appropriate two rows of flame nozzles also burn. The ignition safety means claimed in German Gebrauchsmuster (Utility Model) 81 06 355 additionally ensures that, if a row of flame nozzles of one pipe burns, the ignition flame directed to the other burner pipe also burns at the associated ignition bore. For this purpose, in known manner, an open spacing gap extending to the ignition bore is provided at the leading end of the auxiliary gas shell, and a substantially semi-circular flame extending from one end to the other end is formed, after ignition, at the open spacer gap. In such a case, the auxiliary gas shell forms, in the region of the over-ignition bore, a spacing gap relative to the respective burner pipe, said gap being produced by a broadened portion of the shell.
In the grill apparatus according to the invention, each of the auxiliary gas shells is provided asymmetrically below the respective burner pipes so that, in each case, only one spacing gap for conducting the auxiliary gas is formed at the respective side of the pipes provided with the rows of flame nozzles.
While providing appropriate overall thermal efficiency rates for such a grill appliance, a relatively low local thermal loading is achieved, thereby ensuring that cross-over ignition is guaranteed between the two burner pipes.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gas-fired grill apparatus; Figure 2 is a plan view from below of two burner pipes mounted on the ceiling of the housing of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line I - I of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a plan view from below of part of the two burner pipes in the region of the ignition safety means; and Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along II - II of Figure 4.
A gas-fired grill apparatus illustrated in Figure 1 is an apparatus for installation in caravans or mobile vehicles with living accommodation or the like. A housing 1 is provided having a hinged door and a ceiling 11 of the housing.
As illustrated in Figure 2 a heating grid 2 is disposed internally, on the housing ceiling 11, and two burner pipes 3 and 4 are supported below the heating grid 2 on lateral wall plates 12 and 13; said pipes having an ignition or flame burning gap therebetween and extending parallel to each other.
As illustrated more especially in Figure 3, auxiliary gas dishes or shells 5 and 6 of U-shaped crosssection are provided asymmetrically below the pipes 3 and 4 with a space therebetween. The shells 5 and 6 form spacing gaps 7 and 8 at the respective opposed sides relative to the pipes 3 and 4, and gas emerging from rows of bores 32 and 42 is conducted through the spacing gaps 7 and 8 to the rows of flame nozzles 31 and 41 disposed above the auxiliary gas shells. The purpose of these auxiliary gas nozzles 32 and 42 is to contribute towards forming a flame actually at the rows of flame nozzles 31 and 41.
The two auxiliary gas shells 5 and 6 are broadened at their end regions and are open at their leading ends and these regions are referenced 51 and 61. In each of these regions, at least one cross-over ignition bore 33 or 43 is provided respectively in the pipes 3 and 4 at the ends and opposed to the rows of flame nozzles 31 and 41 with said bores 33 and 43 facing each other. Spacing gaps 9 are also formed in these end regions beneath the cross ignition bores 33 and 43, respectively, by the broadened portions 51 and 61 between the auxiliary gas shells and the pipes. After the row of flame nozzles 41 on the burner pipe 4 have been ignited from the open end of the apparatus, a semi-circular flame is formed at the open end region 61 of the auxiliary gas shell 6, the gas from ignition bore 43 being positively ignited by such flame. The flame which ensures crossignition is formed at the ignition bore 33 of the other burner pipe 3 by the corresponding flame 43. In turn, the semi-circular ignition flame is formed at the open leading end of the auxiliary gas shell 5, so that the row of flame nozzles 31 is thus ignited.
Generally, both burner pipes 3 and 4 can be charged with gas independently of each other by an appropriate valve control means. It is advantageous to make only the front burner pipe 4 disconnectable from the gas source on its own, so that there remains the possibility of operating the appliance by means of only the burner pipe 3.
In accordance with the basic principle of the invention, more than two burner pipes may also be provided.
