Abstract
An extruded elongate member for use in a door or window frame or surround is a sill member and comprises a first two-part "thermal break" section fitting slidingly into a second two-part "thermal break" section. One of the sections (Figure 1) incorporates the sill whilst the other section (Figure 2) forms in use a rail of the door or window frame or surround. Drain holes (15) extend from front face to rear face of the sill section and emerge adjacent the surface of the thermal insulating material (13) without extending into that material. The fit between the two sections is ridged (27, 28) to increase the frictional grip between the two sections and also to form a labyrinth seal resisting rain blown up off the top of the sill in use. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Door and/or window frame members
The invention relates to door and/or window frame members.
The invention is especially applicable to frame members in the form of extruded elongate sections intended to frame glazed window units, glazed doors, or door and window surrounds.
Such members, or frame rails as they may be called, are often made of aluminium although the invention is not restricted to any specific material.
In one broad aspect of the invention, an extruded elongate member for use in a door or window frame or surround ("a member of the kind in question") is a sill member and is characterised by the fact that the sill itself is of hollow box section.
This gives the sill strength combined with light weight, and requires no or minimal~ reinforcement under the sill surface when installing the frame or surround.
Preferably the hollow box sill has at least one reinforcing rib running internally along it, to increase its strength.
In another broad aspect of the invention, a member of the kind in question is a two-part member incorporating a so-called thermal break in the material connecting the front and rear extruded parts of the member, and holes to drain away internal condensation extend from front face to rear face of the front part and emerge adjacent the surface of the thermal insulating material without extending into that material.
This makes it unnecessary to weaken the connecting insulating material by forming drain holes in it.
The said surface of the insulating material may be level with, and form a continuation of, the surface of the front part into which the drain hole emerges.
Condensation then flow naturally across both surfaces into the drain hole.
In yet another broad aspect of the invention, a member of the kind in question is a two-part member incorporating a thermal break and also incorporating a recess in the rear face of its rear part to accommodate an internal sill board.
It is then unnecessary to provide special extensions to secure the member to the broad when the member is fixed by mortar, say, or by a cleat, to the adjacent brick sill.
In a further broad aspect of the invention, a member of the kind in question is a sill member and comprises a first two-part "thermal break" section fitting slidingly into a second two-part "thermal break" section, one of the sections incorporating the sill whilst the other section forms, in use, a rail of the door or window frame or surround.
Any member embodying the invention may combine some or all of the broad aspects defined above.
One member embodying the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings. It is only an example, although currently the preferred example, of forms which the invention might take.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 shows the first section of the member; and
Figure 2 shows the second section, in each case in sectioned end elevation.
Both sections are elongate linear sections extruded from aluminium stock. In Figure 1, a front part 1 1 is joined to a rear part 12 by "thermal break" insulating material blocks 13, 14.
The upper surface of the upper block 13 is level with, and forms a continuation of, a surface 1 a into which one of an equally space succession of drain holes 15 emerges. The lower surface 1 4a of the lower block 14 is raised above the bottom surfaces of the section, to allow mortar to bed the frame onto a brick sill, but it could be level as shown in broken line.
The sill itself is a hollow box section having a top surface 1 b, a bottom surface 1 1 c, and an internal rib 1 1d running along its length at right angles to the bottom surface 1 1 c. The opposite ends of the sill may be capped or plugged. A drip overhang 1 e is provided and is radiused as shown.
A further, external, reinforcing rib 1 f is provided beneath the internal rib 1 1 d, but this rib 14 can be omitted.
A recess 16 in the rear surface of the rear section part 12 accommodates the conventional internal wooden window sill board (not shown) where the section is bedded onto a brick sill in use.
The section of Figure 1 can have uprights, of similar section, screwed to each of its opposite ends to form three out of the four rails of a window frame. In this example, however, the
second section (Figure 2) fits slidingly over it, and the uprights are secured to that second section.
As shown, the second section is a two-part "thermal break" section, similar to that of Figure
1, in that front and rear parts 17, 18 are joined by insulating blocks 19, 21 to define a composite frame rail or surround rail, and drain holes 22 are incorporated. Integrally formed extensions 1 7a,
1 8a, of the front and rear section parts are so sized and spaced that they are a shrouding fit over the front and rear parts 1 1, 12 of the Figure 1 section; and lips 23, 24 on the front and rear surfaces respectively of the Figure 1 section are a
close sliding fit in respective recesses 25, 26 of the Figure 2 section.
The two sections thus fit one within another,
with the portions 1 7a, 1 8a shrouding the front
and rear surfaces 1 1, 12 as indicated in Figure 1
in part-view and broken line.
Ridges 27, 28, formed along the inside facing
surfaces of the portions 1 7a, 1 8a, fit closely
against the outside surfaces of the parts 1 1, 12
when the two sections are fitted together. These
ridges increase the frictional grip between the two
sections, and also form a labrynth seal resisting rain blown up off the top of the sill surface 1 b in use.
