Description

SPECIFICATION Furniture item with synchronous movement of back and seat It is known to provide an item of furniture, such as a chair, with synchronous movement between a back and seat. Such chairs are unnecessarily complicated, require numerous parts which in turn gives the chair a bulky appearance. The furniture item of the present invention is directed to a solution of those problems by minimizing the number of components and simplifying the interrelation of components to provide a compact chair which is easy to assemble.
A first aspect of the present invention is directed to a furniture item with synchronous movement of back and seat comprising a seat support and back adjustable with respect to a stationary frame, means for synchronizing pivotable movement of the back and seat in a predetermined ratio, said means including the seat support being pivotably connected to the frame at a first pivot, a gas cylinder and piston rod, one end of the piston rod being pivotably connected to the frame at a second pivot, one end of the cylinder being pivotably connected to the seat support at a third pivot, the seat support being pivotably connected to the back at a fourth pivot, the back being pivotably connected to the stationary frame at a fifth pivot, the fifth pivot including at least one pin on one of the back and the stationary frame and extending into a slot at an end of the other of the back and stationary frame, whereby adjustment of the angle of the seat support relative to the frame automatically adjusts the angle of the back relative to the seat support in said predetermined ratio.A second aspect of the present invention is directed to a furniture item with synchronous movement of back and seat comprising a seat support and back adjustable with respect to a stationary frame, means for synchronizing pivotable movement of the back and seat in a predetermined ratio, said means including the seat support being pivotably connected to the frame at a first pivot, a gas cylinder and piston rod for adjusting each of the seat support and back relative to the stationary frame, one end of the piston rod being pivotably connected to the frame at a second pivot, one end of the cylinder being pivotably connected to the seat support at a third pivot, the seat support being pivotably connected to the back at a fourth pivot, the back being pivotably connected to the stationary frame at a fifth pivot, the fifth pivot including at least one pin on one of the back and the stationary frame and extending into straight slots at an end of the other of the back and stationary frame, whereby adjustment of the angle of the seat support relative to the frame will automatically adjust the angle of the back relative to the seat support in said predetermined ratio, said synchronous movement including only the five pivots with the elevation of the second and fifth pivots being below the elevation of the remaining pivots.
The thusly interrelated elements of furniture such as a chair will facilitate adjustment of the angle of the seat support relative to the frame and automatically adjust the angle of the back relative to the seat support at a predetermined ratio.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing another position of the back and seat.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of an alternative fifth pivot.
Detailed Description Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like numerals indicate like elements, there is shown in Figure 1 an article of furniture designated generally as 1 0. For purposes of illustration, the furniture 10 is a chair.
The chair 10 includes a base 1 2 horizontally disposed and supported by a plurality of castor wheels 1 4. A vertical standard 1 6 extends upwardly from the base 1 2. The chair includes a two-piece shell 1 8 wherein one piece is attached to the back and the other piece is attached to the bottom of the seat portion. For purposes of clarity, the shell 1 8 is not shown in Figures 2-5.
A stationary frame 20 is fixedly attached to the upper end of the standard 1 6. Standard 16 is preferably hollow so that it may contain a conventional gas cylinder or air spring for adjusting the vertical height of the chair seat. A conventional device is utilized to facilitate adjustment of the height of the back relative to the seat. Frame 20 has upwardly extending flanges 21 and 23. A seat support 24 is provided with seat cushions 22 on the upper surface thereof in a conventional manner. The seat support 24 has downwardly extending flanges 27. Each flange 27 is pivotably connected by pivot pin 26 to one of the flanges 21,23. Flanges 27 are preferably outside the flanges 21,23 as shown in Figure 4 but may be positioned between flanges 21, 23 if desired. Pivot pin 26 may be referred to as a first pivOt.
A cylinder or air spring 28 has a piston rod 30 extending therefrom. The piston rod 30 is pivotably connected to the frame 20 by pivot 32.
Pivot 32 may be referred to as a second pivot. The end of the cylinder 28 remote from the piston rod 30 is pivotably connected to a pair of flanges 35 depending from the seat support 24 at pivot 34.
Pivot 34 may be referred to as a third pivot.
The seat support 24 or the flanges 35 thereof extend beyond the pivot 34 and are pivotably connected to the back 36 at pivot 38. Pivot 38 may be referred to as a fourth pivot. Pivot 38 may be supported by brackets 39 on the back 36 or instead pivot 38 may be a pin supported at its ends by flanges 46. Cushions 40 may be attached to the back 36 in any conventional manner.
The lower end of the back 36 includes a pair of forwardly extending flanges 46. Each flange 46 has a slot 42 receiving a pivot pin 44. One end of the pin 44 is fixed on the flange 23 of the frame 20. The other end of pin 44 is fixed on the flange 21 of the frame 20. Since the frame 20 is stationary, the pin 44 is stationary and may be considered a fifth pivot. Pin 44 is hardened steel and may have a sleeve of plastic such as an acetal resin where it extends through slots 42 to reduce noise. Alternatively the slots 42 may have a liner of such resin.
The angle and length of the slot 42 defines the predetermined ratio of adjustment of the back relative to the seat. As illustrated, the slot 42 is arranged to cause the back to pivot through an angle of 2 for every angle that the seat support 24 pivots. The five pivots in the manner illustrated and described result in a synchronized movement of the back and seat support in a predetermined ratio merely by adjustment of the cylinder or air spring 28 as exemplified by a comparison of Figures 2 and 3. The cylinder or air spring 28 is preferably operated by a lever not shown. The structural interrelationship of the components minimizes the number of components and provides for a seat portion of minimum depth.
Also, the arrangement of components is easy to assemble. The manner in which the cushions 22 and any associated support are connected to the seat support 24 may be conventional.
In Figure 5 there is illustrated a preferred form of the fifth pivot wherein corresponding elements are identified with corresponding numerals. The frame 20' has depending flanges 48. The slot 42' is in the flanges 48 and the associated pin 44' is fixedly attached to the flanges 46'.
Notwithstanding the reversal of parts, the fifth pivots perform in the same manner. The fifth pivot shown in Figure 5 is preferred since it transmits the loads involved with less stress and is less expensive to construct. Pin 44', like pin 44, may be covered with a plastic sleeve to reduce noise.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claims, rather than to the foregoing specification, as indicating the scope of the invention.
