Abstract

A fastening device especially for guarding against unwanted removal e.g. by loss or theft of personal property being carried, e.g. on the person or in a bag, has a member (2) attachable to e.g. clothing or a bag having a catch (23) which is releasably engageable in a recess (11) on a spigoted member (1) which is attached to a personal item. The member (2) with the catch (23) can be attached to the rear of an article of clothing so that it is hidden from view or it can be attached to a girdle e.g. a belt by a clamping holder (4). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Fastening devices This invention relates to fastening devices especially for guarding against unwanted removal, e.g. by loss or theft of personal property being carried, e.g. on the person or in a bag.
It is a common problem that personal items such as wallets, purses, documents or other valuables can be easily removed from people's pockets or luggage and the like. The problem generally arises in crowds in public places, such as department stores and railway stations. Thus, an object of this invention is to guard against easy removal or loss of personal items being carried.
According to this invention, I propose a fastening device for guarding against unwanted removal of a first article from a second article, by releasably attaching the first article to the second article, comprising a first member attachable to the first article, a second member attachable to the second article and a resilient catch on at least one of the first and second members cooperable with the other of these members for releasably co-engaging the first and second members.
This device is highly effective because it prevents easy pickpocketing and items from easily falling out of pockets, bags and the like. The release mechanism can be hidden from view to avoid tampering.
Preferably, the second member of the fastening device has a catch having a resilient portion at one end and a press-release knob at the other end with a fulcrum pin there between. The resilient portion is cooperable with an annular recess on a spigot portion of the first member.
Upon the press-release knob being pressed the catch is released and it is then ejected by means of a spring seated between the first member and the second member. The assembly of the second member is held together by virtue of an internally threaded nut cooperable with an externally threaded cylindrical portion within which the spigot of the first member is housed.
The second member may be positioned on a layer of material of e.g. a piece of luggage or an article of clothing e.g. a shirt, jacket or trousers such that the cylindrical portion is externally visible. The first member is fixed to the item e.g. a wallet to be attached to the bag or article of clothing and it is then locked to the second member by means of the catch and;recess. The second member may be alternatively fixed to a belt or similar, by means of a clamp or holder.
It is seen that the fastening device according to this invention enables items such as personal property to be less easy to remove/lose and it is therefore very useful. The device can also act as a deterrent against theft.
Embodiments of this invention are described by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded view of a first portion of a first securing device of this invention and ring members; Figure 2 is a partially exploded view of a second portion of the securing device; Figure 3 is a fully exploded view of the second portion shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 shows an alternative second portion of a securing device according to this invention; and Figure 5 shows a wallet having a first portion fixed thereto.
A fastening device according to this invention has a first member (1) cooperable with a second member (2). The first member (1) has a disc carrying a spigot having a rounded head. An annular recess (11) is located below the head.
The second member (2) includes an externally threaded cylindrical portion (24) having a cylindrical bore (241) and an outer flange having a locating pin (242) over which the locating holes (261) of two washers (26) may be consecutively positioned followed by an internally threaded nut (25). The washers are for attachment to either side of a layer of material of the article.
An annular portion (21) of the second member has a cut-away portion through which a catch (23) is passed. The catch has a resilient portion (232) at one end and a press-release knob at the other end, with a fulcrum pin (231) located on the catch therebetween. A spring (22) is located in the cylindrical bore (261) between a base plate (212) and the spring has a cover (221) for engagement by the head of the first member. The base plate may be fixed e.g. by screws or rivets through the annular portion (21) to the cylindrical portion (24).
The first member is locked to the second member by pressing the spigot into the cylindrical bore such that the catch (23) is caught in the recess (11). The catch is removable from the recess upon the knob (234) being pressed by which the first member is released from the cylindrical bore (241) by means of movement of the resilient end portion (233) of the catch turning about the fulcrum (231) and then ejected by the spring (22) between the first portion and the base plate (212).
In a second embodiment, the second member is attached to a clamping holder (4) which can be carried on a gridle, for example a belt, by e.g.
screws (43). The clamp has two washer-like portions, forming an aperture (41), instead of the washers (26) and the locating pin (242) is inserted in holes (42) as before.
The first member can be fixed e.g. by pressfitting to one inside corner of an item such as a wallet, as shown in Figure 5, and it can be passed through a hole in the corresponding inside corner formed within collars (3). The first member can then be locked to the second member as earlier described. Second members according to the first type can conveniently be fixed to clothing e.g. the back portion of pockets of, for example, shirts, jackets or trousers. The second member passes through the material thereof, with one washer on the outwardly facing side and on the inwardly facing side so that the release mechanism is between the wearer and the clothing and not externally visible.
The device according to this invention is very useful because an article from a person's pocket or bag cannot be easily removed by a pickpocket without the person noticing. Typically, the device is smail and fiddly to discourage a pickpocket tampering with it and the catch-release knob is hidden from view. The device may be about 1 cm in diameter.
