Abstract

A joint for connecting a branch pipe to a pipe 1 comprises an inner sleeve 5 which extends through a hole 2 and has a flange 3 located inside the pipe of a larger diameter than the diameter of the hole 2, a saddle 8 surrounding the external portion 4 of the inner sleeve, and a shoulder fitting 13 which is secured to the inner sleeve and presses the saddle against the outer surface of the pipe 1 and the flange 3 of the inner sleeve against the inner surface of the pipe. In order to be able to displace the flange 3 of the inner sleeve through the hole 2 into the pipe 1, the inner sleeve is provided with a longitudinal slit 6 which permits the inner sleeve to be pushed beyond the edge of the hole. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A joint for connecting a branch pipe to a hole in a wall The present invention relates to a joint for connecting a branch pipe to a hole in a wall, preferably a pipe wall said joint comprising an inner formed by a sleeve one end of which is provided with a flange which has a larger diameter than the diameter of said hole made in the pipe wall and which is pressed against the inner surface of the pipe, a saddle formed by a sleeve which surrounds the inner and is at one end provided with a flange which is pressed against the outer surface of the pipe, and a pipe fitting or shoulder for the branch pipe coupled to the inner.
Branch pipes are commonly connected to pipes, such as sewers, within buildings by sawing in the pipe wall a hole of suitable size into which a so-called inner is inserted around which a saddle is arranged. The inner and the saddle are glued to each other whereby they are locked in place because the flanges in the inner and the saddle are pressed against the inner and the outer surface, respectively, of the pipe.
To mount the inner in place causes no problems provided that this step can be carried out from within the pipe. However, there is in general no access to the inside of the pipe, and in this case the inner must be inserted in the hole from the outside of the pipe. This causes problems because the diameter of the flange of the inner must be greater than the diameter of the hole so that the flange can be pressed against the inner surface of the pipe to thereby prevent the disconnection of the joint from the pipe. In general, this problem has been solved by making the flange elliptical in shape with the smaller diameter of the ellipse corresponding to the diameter of the hole. By positioning the inner transversally in the hole so that the greatest diameter of the flange is perpendicular to the centre line of the pipe flange of the inner can be entirely inserted in the pipe.
When the inner hereupon is turned so that its sleeve portion entirely projects out of the hole and the flange portion is within the pipe, the flange is pressed against the inner surface of the pipe.
However, this construction suffers from the disadvantage that the flange is not pressed against the pipe wall along its entire length but only along those portions where its diameter is larger than that of the hole which makes the joint mechanically weak. For this reason, such an inner cannot be used in mechanical joints.
The object of the present invention is to provide such a joint in which the flange of the inner substantially over its entire length has a larger diameter than the hole of the pipe and in which the inner, inspite of this, can be inserted in place from the outside of the pipe. This object is achieved by means of the invention by providing the inner with a substantially longitudinal slit permitting the pushing of the inner beyond the edge of the hole in the pipe wall. Owing to the slit, the inner can be displaced from the outside of the pipe to the inside thereof by positioning the inner transversally at the hole so that its centre line is perpendicular to the centre line of the hole and by positioning the slit at the wall, whereafter the inner is pushed beyond the edge of the hole and displaced into the pipe.Owing to the mounting manner permitted by the slit, the flange of the inner may over its entire length be wider than the hole in the pipe so that the joint can be made very stable.
In order to lock the inner in place during the mounting, the outer surface of the sleeve portion of the inner may be provided with a few projections at a distance from the flange of the inner corresponding to the wall thickness of the pipe. Due to the projections, the inner remains in its final position while the joint is made.
Another means for locking the inner in place during the mounting comprises a longitudinal rib in the inner surface of the saddle and which rib is inserted in the slit of the inner. When the saddle is pushed onto the inner so that the rib is inserted in the slit in the inner, the diameter of the inner cannot be reduced due to closing of the slit.
One preferred embodiment of the joint according to the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a joint according to the invention, Figure 2 is an exploded view of the various parts of the joint in longitudinal section, Figure 3 is an end view of the inner, and Figure 4 illustrates in perspective view the insertion of the inner.
Figure 1 shows a section of a pipe 1 to which a pipe fitting is fastened by means of the joint according to the invention. For the joint, a circular hole 2 is sawn in the pipe wall. An inner 5 consisting of a flange 3 and a sleeve 4 is located in said hole so that the flange is located within the pipe while the sleeve extends through the hole to the outside of the pipe Because the flange is of a uniform width over its entire length, it surrounds the whole of the hole 2 with the exception of a narrow slit 6 which divides the inner longitudinally thereof. The outer surface of the sleeve of the inner is provided with two projections 7 having a perpendicular surface facing the flange 3 and an inclined surface facing the opposite end of the inner. The distance of the perpendicular surface from the flange corresponds to the wall thickness of pipe.
The inner 5 is surrounding by a saddle consisting of a flange which is pressed against the outer surface of the pipe and a sleeve 1 0 which adjoins said flange and has an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the sleeve of the inner. Between the flange 9 and the outer surface of the pipe is provided an adhesive layer 11 which forms one sealing and comprises, e.g., a double side adhesive tape or a rubber gasket or a solvent cement. The inner surface of the sleeve is provided with a longitudinal rib 12 which has a width corresponding to the width of the slit 6 and which is located in said slit.
The third section of the joint is formed by a shoulder 13 to which again is connected a pipe fitting (not shown). The shoulder is made of a sleeve having at one end external threads 14 in engagement with internal threads 1 5 in the inner 5. Centrally of the shoulder is located an external flange 16 which facilitates the turning of the shoulder and which with one of its ends, on one hand, is pressed against the upper edge of the saddle 8 and, on the other hand, together with the bevelled edge 1 7 of the saddle, forms a space for a sealing ring 18.
The joint according to the invention is mounted in the following manner. When a circular hole 2, for example by means of a circular saw, has been made in the wall of the pipe 1 made, for example, of plastic, the inner 5 is positioned transversally at the hole so that its centre axis is more or less perpendicular to the centre axis of the hole and the slit 6 is located at the edge of the hole, i.e. at the wall of the pipe. Hereafter, the inner is pushed in the peripheral direction of the pipe so as to displace the slit 6 along the pipe wall to a distance from the hole, see Fig. 4. The part of the inner located in the hole is now displaced into the pipe and the slit is removed from its position adjacent to the pipe wall whereby the inner will be entirely located within the pipe.Here it is turned so that its centre line will be parallel with the centre line of the hole and its sleeve portion is pulled out of the hole so as to position the flange 3 against the inner surface of the pipe around the hole.
When the sleeve is pulled out of the hole, the projections 7 to some extent compress the slit until the perpendicular surfaces of the projections will be displaced outside the pipe at which moment the inner flexes back to its original diameter and the perpendicular surfaces of the projections are pressed against the outer surface of the pipe while locking the inner in place.
Hereafter the protective paper is removed from the tape surface of the flange 9 of the saddle and the saddle 8 is pushed onto the inner so as to position the rib 12 in the slit 6 which ensures the locking effect of the projections because. the inner is no more able of being compressed. Finally, the shoulder, in which the sealing ring 18 is positioned, is turned in place into the inner. The shoulder ultimately prevents the loosening of the inner from the hole because it prevents the reduction of the diameter of the inner. At the same time, the flange 1 6 of the shoulder presses the saddle 8 against the outer surface of the pipe, and the flange 3 of the inner against the inner surface of the pipe, while thereby securing the joint to the pipe.
It is to be noted that both the projections 7 and the rib 12 are auxiliary means which keep the inner in place during mounting of the joint and which have no proper function in the final joint.
However, in tests it has been found that they are of great advantage at the mounting stage. Of course, the flange 3 of the inner need not be of an uniform width over its entire length but the width may, if desired, vary. In addition, it is to be noted that the shoulder 13 may, if desired, be omitted in which case one of the ends of the pipe fitting is of a corresponding shape. The threads 14, 15 in the shoulder and the inner can be replaced with any other mechanical connection or an adhesive joint.
It is also to be noted that the inner must be sufficiently short to fit through the hole into the pipe.
The joint of the present invention can also be used when coupling a pipe to a hole in a planar or spherical wall of e.g. a container.

Claims (5)

1. A joint for connecting a branch pipe to a hole in a wall, preferably a pipe wall, said joint comprising an inner formed by a sleeve one end of which is provided with a flange which has a larger diameter than the diameter of said hole made in the pipe wall and which abuts the inner surface of the pipe, a saddle formed by a sleeve which surrounds the inner and is at one end provided with a flange abutting the outer surface of the pipe, and a pipe fitting or shoulder for the branch pipe coupled to the inner, wherein the inner is provided with a substantially longitudinal slit permitting the pushing of the inner beyond the edge of the hole in the pipe wall.
2. The joint as claimed in claim 1, wherein, for locking the inner in place during mounting, the outer surface of the sleeve portion of the inner is provided with a few projections at a distance from the flange of the inner corresponding to the thickness of the pipe wall.
3. The joint as claimed in claim 1, wherein, for locking the inner in place during mounting, the inner surface of the saddle is provided with a longitudinal rib located in the slit of the inner.
4. The joint as claimed in claim 1, wherein the connection between the pipe fitting or the shoulder and the inner comprises inner threads on the inner and outer threads on said other portion.
5. A joint constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described and as shown in the figures of the accompanying drawings.
