Abstract
One or more silencers 12, 13, 14 or catalytic converters are interconnected by tubes 15, which tubes provide a connection to an exhaust manifold and an outlet pipe. The system is formed from a pair of pressings 10 and 11, each pressing having a pair of marginal flanges 16 which abut corresponding flanges on the other pressing, the abutting flanges being secured together in gas- tight manner by welding (Fig. 3A) or by bending (Fig. 3B). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Exhaust systems
This invention relates to exhaust systems.
According to one aspect of the present invention an exhaust system comprises; a silencer having an outer casing, a pipe for connecting said silencer to an exhaust manifold or downtake and an outlet pipe from said silencer, in which; the casing of said silencer, the pipe for connecting the silencer to an exhaust manifold or downtake and the outlet pipe are of integral construction being formed from a pair of pressings, each of said pressings having a pair of marginal flanges which abut corresponding flanges on the other pressing, said abutting flanges being secured together in gas-tight manner.
The exhaust system, in addition to the silencer, may incorporate other sub-assemblies, for example, other silencers or catalytic convertors, the housings for these other sub-assemblies being formed integrally of the casing of the silencer, from the pair of pressings.
The internals for the silencers or other subassemblies, where these are included, may be pre-assembled as a cartridge, which has only to be dropped into the formations of the pressings which define the casing of the silencer etc, before the two pressings are assembled and the flanges secured together. These pre-assembled internals may be individually encased, so as to create a double skinned case when enclosed in the two pressings. The internals may be of conventional construction, for example formed from closed perforated tube, or may again be formed from a pair of sheet metal pressings. In the latter case, the sheet metal pressings may be secured together prior to assembly, or may be clamped together by the outer casing, when the two pressings forming the outer casing are secured together, for example by trapping the marginal flanges of the pressings forming the internals between the marginal flanges of the pressings forming the outer casing.
The flanges of the two pressings forming the casing of the silencer and the pipes, may be secured together by any convenient means which will provide a gas-tight seam. For example, the flanges may be welded together continuously, or may be secured together by a mechanical lock, along the whole of their lengths.
Using this form of construction, exhaust systems may be formed purely from sheet material with consequent savings in material handling and stocking; that is, there is no need to stock the various sizes of tubing required for exhaust systems of conventional construction.
Also, fewer operations are required to produce the finished product, for example the seams of the exhaust systems formed in accordance with the present invention may be produced either by welding or forming a mechanical lock, in a single run, which may be carried out by machine.
The present method also provides greater flexibility, in that the shape of the silencer or subassembly casing and interconnecting pipes etc.
may be optimised to suit specific packaging constraints. For example, the silencer or subassembly casing may be asymmetrical rather than symmetrical, as is normal with conventional exhaust components. Also the pipes may be of any desired cross-section, or may even vary in cross-section along their length, rather than be of circular cross-section as used in exhaust systems of conventional construction.
Various embodiments of the present invention are now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which: Figure 1 shows a typical exhaust system, formed in accordance with the present invention, with exploded views of the internals of the various sub-assemblies;
Figure 2 shows an alternative construction for the internals of one of the sub-assemblies of the exhaust system shown in Figure 1; and
Figures 3A and 3B show alternative methods of forming a gas-tight joint between the pressings forming the exhaust system, shown in Figure 1.
The exhaust system illustrated in Figure 1 comprises three silencers elements 12, 13 and 14, interconnected by pipes 15, the elements 12, 13 and 14 and pipes 1 5 being formed as an integral unit from a pair of sheet metal pressings 10and 11.
The two pressings 10 and 11 which form the outer casings of the various silencer elements and interconnecting pipes of the exhaust system, are formed with marginal flanges 16, so that the flanges of one pressing 10, abut the flanges of the other pressing 11, when the two are brought together. The two pressings 10 and 11 may then be joined together, in gas-tight manner, by means of a welded seam along the length of each pair of abutting flanges 16, as illustrated in Figure 3A; or by forming a mechanical lock between each pair of abutting flanges 16, as illustrated in Figure 3B.
In the latter case, a sealant may be included between the flanges 16, in order to ensure a gastight joint.
In the exhaust system illustrated, silencer element 1 2 forms a front resonator. This front resonator comprises a substantially cylindrical casing 20 formed by the two pressings 10 and 1 with a perforated metal tube 21, providing a clear passageway through the casing 20. The perforated tube 21 is formed from two half pressings 22, 23 jointed together by means of marginal flanges 24. The perforated tube 21 is surrounded by a pack of steel wool 25 which in turn is surrounded by a pack of sound absorptive material 26. Both the packs 25 and 26 are formed as two halves, split longitudinally, in order to facilitate assembly.
The silencer element 13, forms the main silencer for the system. Again the two half pressings 10 and 11 define a casing 30, in which is located three perforated tubes 31, which are mounted at each end by means of baffle plates 32 and 33, in order to define a winding passageway for exhaust gasses passing through the silencer.
The portions of the perforated tubes 31, disposed between the baffle plates 32 and 33 are surrounded by sound absorptive material which is applied as a pre-formed pack in two halves 32 and 35.
Silencer element 14, which forms the rear silencer, like the front resonator 12, has a cylindrical casing, in which a perforated pipe 41, formed from two half pressings 42 and 43, runs from one end of the casing 40 to the other, to define a clear passageway therethrough.
Perforated pipe 41 is surrounded by a pack 44 of sound absorptive material, which again is formed in two halves.
The internal structure of the various silencer elements described above, may be preformed and merely dropped into one of the pressings 10 defining the system, before the two pressings 10 and 11 are brought together and the flanges 16 are joined together, in one of the manners described above.
Figure 2 shows an alternative construction for the internal components used in the main silencer 13. In this construction, the winding passageway through the casing 30, is formed by a pair of pressings 50 and 51 formed from perforated metal. When these pressings 50 and 51 are secured together, they define three perforated tubular elements, similar to the tubes 31 shown in Figure 1. Again the pressings 50 and 51 are surrounded by a pack of sound absorptive material 34, 35, as shown in Figure 1.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the present invention. For example, the invention may be used to form exhaust systems including subassemblies other than silencer elements, for example, catalytic converters. Also the internals of the various components may be formed in any convenient manner, for example perforated tubes may be formed from closed tube or pressings, and the sound absorbant material may be in the form of preformed packs as described, or may be in the form of a blanket which is wrapped about the perforated tubes.
