Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to fishing tackle This invention relates to items of fishing tackle, more particularly to rod rests.

According to the invention there is provided a head for an anglers rod-rest and having a rod seat, wherein the head is made of a relatively hard plastics material and the rod seat is of a relatively soft plastics material.

The head may be formed so as to be fixed to a support (e.g. a bank stick) by any suitable means, e.g. by a screw threaded mounting.

Preferably the relatively hard plastics material is an engineering plastic, for example polycarbonate.

Preferably the relatively soft plastics material is an elastomer.

The use of the relatively hard plastics material provides a rigid and serviceable construction, whereas the relatively soft plastics material ensures that there will be no damage to the rod when it is rested on the seat. Additionally, the soft plastics material helps to reduce vibrations which may be transmitted to the ground when the rod is moved and which may scare fish.

The invention is further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of a first embodiment of rod rest head in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of a second embodiment of rod rest head but omitting the soft plastics material providing the rod seat; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the head shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 2 but showing the soft plastics material providing the rod seat (in section at the left hand side of the figure and in full view at the right hand side).

The rod rest head 1 illustrated in Fig. 1 has a body 2 formed (e.g. by injection moulding) as wings 2a and 2b. The upper edges of wings 2a and 2b are together inclined in a comparatively shallow V-shaped formation whereas their adjacent edges together define a comparatively deep V-shaped notch.

Also included is a screw-threaded abutment 3 for mounting the head 1 on a bank stick (not shown).

Body 2 is made of a hard engineering plastics material (e.g. polycarbonate) but the upper and adjacent edges of wings 2a and 2b are provided with a facing of soft plastics material 4. This soft plastics material 4 is keyed onto the body 2 for example in the manner illustrated in the inset to Fig. 1.

The head 1 thus has a rod seat 5 which is provided by the soft plastics material 4 and which is of generally the same v-shaped configuration as defined by the upper edges of wings 2a and 2b.

The rod rest head 10 illustrated in Fig. 4 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 in that it comprises an injection moulded body 11 (illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3) formed as wings 1 a and 1 b and a screw threaded abutment 12.

Once again, the upper edges of wings 1 Oa and 1 Ob form a relatively shallow V-shaped formation and their adjacent edges define a relatively deep V-shaped notch.

The upper and adjacent edges of wings 1 Oa and lOb are beaded as at 13 and rectangular recesses 14 are provided below this beading as illustrated.

Strengthening ribs 1 5 are provided along the lower edges of wings 1 a and 11 b.

A run of generally circular section soft plastics material 1 6 is provided along the upper and adjacent edges of wings 1 a and 1 b around beading 13, as will be appreciated from the sectional insert to Fig. 4. The plastics material 1 6 may be injection moulded onto the body 11 and as such enters the apertures 14 and solidifies therein thereby securing the material 1 6 to the body 11.

The material 1 6 thus provides a soft rod seat 1 7 of generally the same V-shaped formation as defined by the upper edges of wings 11 a and 11 b.

An angler may rest his fishing rod 1 8 in the apex of this seat.

1. A head for an anglers rod rest comprising a body of a relatively hard plastics material and having a rod seat provided by a relatively soft plastics material.

2. A head as claimed in claim 1 wherein the body is formed as two wings whereof the upper edges define a V-shaped formation and the soft plastics material is provided along said edges.

3. A head as claimed in claim 2 wherein said edges are beaded.

4. A head as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein apertures are provided in said body beneath said upper edges and the soft plastics material locates in said apertures to mount the rod seat in position.

5. A head as claimed in any one of claims -1 to 4 wherein the body is of polycarbonate.

6. A head as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the soft plastics material is an elastomer.

7. A head for an anglers rod rest substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 1 or Figs. 2 to 4.

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to fishing tackle This invention relates to items of fishing tackle, more particularly to rod rests. According to the invention there is provided a head for an anglers rod-rest and having a rod seat, wherein the head is made of a relatively hard plastics material and the rod seat is of a relatively soft plastics material. The head may be formed so as to be fixed to a support (e.g. a bank stick) by any suitable means, e.g. by a screw threaded mounting. Preferably the relatively hard plastics material is an engineering plastic, for example polycarbonate. Preferably the relatively soft plastics material is an elastomer. The use of the relatively hard plastics material provides a rigid and serviceable construction, whereas the relatively soft plastics material ensures that there will be no damage to the rod when it is rested on the seat. Additionally, the soft plastics material helps to reduce vibrations which may be transmitted to the ground when the rod is moved and which may scare fish. The rod rest head 1 illustrated in Fig. 1 has a body 2 formed (e.g. by injection moulding) as wings 2a and 2b. Once again, the upper edges of wings 1 Oa and 1 Ob form a relatively shallow V-shaped formation and their adjacent edges define a relatively deep V-shaped notch. The upper and adjacent edges of wings 1 Oa and lOb are beaded as at 13 and rectangular recesses 14 are provided below this beading as illustrated. Strengthening ribs 1 5 are provided along the lower edges of wings 1 a and 11 b. A run of generally circular section soft plastics material 1 6 is provided along the upper and adjacent edges of wings 1 a and 1 b around beading 13, as will be appreciated from the sectional insert to Fig. 4. The plastics material 1 6 may be injection moulded onto the body 11 and as such enters the apertures 14 and solidifies therein thereby securing the material 1 6 to the body 11. The material 1 6 thus provides a soft rod seat 1 7 of generally the same V-shaped formation as defined by the upper edges of wings 11 a and 11 b. An angler may rest his fishing rod 1 8 in the apex of this seat. CLAIMS

1. A head for an anglers rod rest comprising a body of a relatively hard plastics material and having a rod seat provided by a relatively soft plastics material.

2. A head as claimed in claim 1 wherein the body is formed as two wings whereof the upper edges define a V-shaped formation and the soft plastics material is provided along said edges.

3. A head as claimed in claim 2 wherein said edges are beaded.

4. A head as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein apertures are provided in said body beneath said upper edges and the soft plastics material locates in said apertures to mount the rod seat in position.

5. A head as claimed in any one of claims -1 to 4 wherein the body is of polycarbonate.

6. A head as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the soft plastics material is an elastomer.

7. A head for an anglers rod rest substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 1 or Figs. 2 to 4.
