Sand &c., distributing on wheel tracks. - In an -electrically - operated sanding device operated by the regenerative current produced when the motors run as generators and provide an electric braking action, the energizing coil of the rear sanding device is connected to the controller at the forward or driving end, and to the motor or motors, and the controller connections and contacts are arranged so that when the controller handle is turned to the " off " position, and without altering the position of the reversing handle, the necessary connections are made by which should the vehicle run backwardly, and the direction of rotation of the motor or motors reserved, each motor is connected so that it then runs as a generator and applies an electric braking action to the vehicle, the regenerative current produced also energizing the coil by which the sanding device is operated. The valve in the sand-box B<1> is connected by a rod b<2>, bell crank b<1>, connecting rod d<2>, and bell crank d<1> to the foot plunger D<1> operated by the driver. A bracket f<9> connects the electromagnet F<1> to the connecting rod d<2> so that when current is supplied to the electromagnet it operates the sand valve. The motors M, P are connected to earth at e<2> and, in parallel, to the main 1 connected to the controller at the other end of the vehicle. Each controller C' is provided with contacts c<1>, c<2>, and the energizing means in each electromagnet comprises two coils connected to a common earth at e<1> so that when contact is made at c<2> by the controller handle in normal braking of the vehicle, one coil is energized through the main 2 and sand deposited in front of the front wheels. When the controller handle is turned to the " off " or " neutral " position and without altering the position of the reversing handle, contact is made at c<1> to put the motors in parallel with one of the two coils of the rear sanding device so that should the car run backwardly the rear electromagnet is energized and sand deposited on the rails.
