Abstract

A hygienic device for a telephone mouthpiece has a cover (12) which is a press fit over the mouthpiece (14) and grips a disposable pad (20) against the microphone recess (22) of the mouthpiece (14). The pad is impregnated with a germicide or a perfume or both. The cover (12) is made of plastics material and may be impregnated with a germicide or perfume or both. Alternatively an odorous ring (24) may be secured between the cover (12) and the mouthpiece (14). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to hygiene The present invention realtes to hygiene and in particular to a hygiene device for a mouthpiece of a telephone handset.
For obvious reasons it may be difficult for and extremely high standard of cleanliness to be maintained with regard to telephones which are used by a number of people, for example in offices and the like. Even where there are such high standards of hygiene, for example in the home, it is impossible to ensure that the mouthpiece of a telephone handset is kept free from bacteria.
The present invention seeks to reduce this problem.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a hygienic device for a mouthpiece of a telephone handset, the device comprising a disposable pad or the like shaped for location in the microphone recess of the mouthpiece and cover means engagable over the mouthpiece to retain said pad in position, said cover means having opening means for allowing transmission of sound to the mouthpiece microphone.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the pad is conveniently made of a suitable absorbent material such as tissue paper and although it may comprise a single layer it is preferably multi-layered. In one form of the invention the pad has one or more layers impregnated with a preferably non-toxic antiseptic or antibiotic or other suitable germicide. Conveniently, where the pad has more than one layer the lowermost layer or layers are impregnated. The upper and lower surfaces of the pad may be differently textured or coloured or otherwise identified to enable a user to orientate the pad correctly.
In addition, the pad may be partially or wholely impregnated with a perfume. Where two or more different types of impregnating substance are used it may be desirable to ensure that they do not mix by, for example, including an impervious layer or layers of material in the pad or rendering a surface of one or more layers pervious.
Conveniently the cover means is moulded from plastics material and is impregnated with a perfume or germicide or both.
The present invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred form of the present invention.
The device 10 is shown in the drawing comprises a cap-shaped cover 1 2 for a mouthpiece 1 4 of a telephone handset. The cover 1 2 is suitably shaped to fit over the mouthpiece 14 and has a central opening 1 6 to allow sound to be transmitted to the mouthpiece microphone. The opening 1 6 may, alternatively, be comprised by perforations.
The cover 1 2 is generally shaped to conform to the shape of the mouthpiece 1 4 and is provided with flexible internal ribs 1 8 which deform when the cover 1 2 is pressed onto the mouthpiece 14 to compensate for any differences between the internal diameter of the cover 1 2 and the external diameter of the mouthpiece 14. The ribs 1 8 are conveniently V-shaped in cross section to enable them to deform easily, although any suitable shape may be used.
The device also comprises a pad 20 which is shaped to fit in the microphone recess 22 of the mouthpiece 1 4 and is held in position by the cover 1 2. The pad 20 is preferably of non-woven fabric and is impregnated with an antiseptic or antibiotic or other suitable germicide and, preferably, a perfume.
The cover 1 2 is conveniently moulded from plastics material and may be impregnated with a germicide or perfume or both. Alternatively, an odorous ring 22 may be provided which is secured between the cover 1 2 and the mouthpiece 1 4 when the cover is in position.
The manner of attachment of the cover 1 2 ensures that it can easily be removed for sterilisation or for replacement of the disposable pad 20.
As an alternative or addition to the germicide and/or perfume, either or both the pad and cover can be impregnated with an air freshener.
1. A hygienic device for a mouthpiece of a telephone handset, the device comprising a disposable pad or the like for location in the microphone recess of the mouthpiece and cover means engagable over the mouthpiece to retain said pad in position said cover means having opening means for allowing transmission of sound to the mouthpiece microphone.
2. A hygienic device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pad is impregnated with a germicide and/or a perfume.
3. A hygienic device as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the cover means comprises at least one internal deformable rib frictionally engaging the mouthpiece to retain the cover means on the mouthpiece.
4. A hygienic device as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the cover means is made of plastics material which is impregnated with a germicide and/or a perfume.
5. A hygienic device for a telephone mouthpiece substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
