Description

SPECIFICATION A concrete foundation for a railway rail According to a first aspect of the invention, a concrete foundation for a railway rail is formed with a recess at its top for reception of the flange at the bottom of a railway rail, the recess being bounded on each side over part of its length by the concrete and over another part of its length by a metal insert in the concrete which affords a passageway beside the recess for reception of a leg of a rail clip.
According to a second aspect of the invention, a concrete foundation for a railway rail is formed with a recess at its top for reception of the flange at the bottom of a railway rail, there being disposed adjacent the recess on each side thereof a metal insert which affords a passageway beside the recess for reception of a leg of a rail clip, the highest point on the insert being on the same level as the adjacent upper surface of the concrete, i.e. the concrete beyond said insert, as seen from the recess, or at a level no more than 2 cm.
higher or lower than the adjacent upper surface of the concrete.
According to a third aspect of the invention, a concrete foundation for a railway rail is formed with a recess at its top for reception of the flange at the bottom of a railway rail, there being disposed adjacent the recess on each side thereof a metal insert which affords a passageway beside the recess for reception of a leg of a rail clip, the highest point inside the passageway being on the same level as the adjacent upper surface of the concrete, i.e. the concrete beyond said insert, as seen from the recess, or up to 1 cm. higher or up to 2 cm. lower.
There could be an insert at one side of the recess and another insert at the other side of the recess or there could be a single insert, parts of which form the two passageways. In both cases the insert or each insert may be formed by cutting and bending sheet steel and in the second case each insert could be a cast member, for example made of malleable cast iron.
The foundation could serve as a foundation for only one rail or it could be a railway sleeper which forms a foundation for two rails, each with its flange in a recess in the top of the sleeper.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate three examples, each in accordance with all three aspects of the invention, Figure 1 shows an end view of a railway rail-and-fastening assembly, Figure 2 shows a plan view of the same assembly, Figure 3 shows a side view of the same assembly, and Figures 4 and 5 show views, corresponding to part of Fig. 1, of modified rail-andfastening assemblies.
Figs. 1 to 3 show a portion of a concrete railway sleeper 1 formed with a recess at its top extending across the entire width of the sleeper. The recess is about 1 6.6 cm. wide and about 2.5 cm. deep and the floor 2 of the recess lies in a plane which is parallel to a horizontal plane which contains the upper surfaces 3 and 4 of the concrete on opposite sides of the recess, although the first plane could be inclined to the horizontal. On each side of the recess is a metal insert 5 made by cutting and bending sheet steel 6 cm. wide and 1 cm. thick, portions of which were incorporated in the concrete of the sleeper before it had set, by the insert being placed partly in a mould used to make the sleeper.
Each insert includes a leg 6 which is bifurcated at its lower end to form leg parts 6A and 6B and has a lug 6C pressed sideways for engagement with the bottom of the mould in order to inhibit movement of the insert when the concrete is poured into the mould.
A vertical part 7 of each insert projects out of the concrete and its face 7A nearer the other insert bounds the recess over part of its length, the recess being bounded over most of the remainder of its length by a surface 1 A of the concrete, this being flush with the surface 7A. The zones 1 B are free from concrete above the level of the floor 2 of the recess.
The vertical part 7 of each insert, a horizontal part 8 and two curved parts 9 and 10 form an arch and on the side of it remote from the recess the insert first extends horizontally and then is bifurcated, one limb 11 extending downwardly into the concrete and the other limb 1 2 extending horizontally, with its upper surface 1 2A flush with the surface 3 or 4.
A moulded pad 1 5 of rubber or other electrically insulating material, about 1 cm.
thick, has its lower face lying on the floor 2 of the recess and has at opposite ends two downwardly-extending flanges 16, which extend a short distance down the sides of the sleeper and adjacent thereto, and has at opposite sides two upwardly-extending flanges 1 7 which abut the faces 1A and 7A.
A standard railway rail having a flange 1 8 stands on the upper face of the pad, which in this case is parallel to its lower face although the two faces could be inclined to one another. The rail is positively located by the flanges 1 7 and the surfaces 1 A and 7A.
Two rail clips according to Patent No.
1510224, made by bending steel bars of circular cross-section and 1.80 cm. diameter have their straight legs 20 driven in opposite directions under the arches of the inserts and pressing upwardly on the portions 8 of the inserts, whilst portions 21 of the clips bear downwardly on the upper surface of the rail flange and portions 22 of the clips bear downwardly on the horizontal parts of the inserts on the sides of them remote from the recess in the sleeper. Electrically insulating material could be interposed between the portions 21 of the clips and the rail flange.
The parts of the clips connecting the portions 20 and 22 lie above an inclined upper surface 1 B or the concrete. On the other sides of the inserts, the top of the concrete is provided with ribs 1 C the tops of which are flush with the tops of the inserts.
In the example shown in Fig. 4, the surface 3 is about 4 cm. higher than the floor of the recess, the top of the portion 8 of the insert is at a level about cm. lower than the level of the surface 3 and the highest point in the passageway for the clip, i.e. on the underneath face of the portion 8 of the insert, is at a level about 1 cm. below the level of the surface 3.
The leg 1 2 of the insert curves upwardly and its free end 1 2A lies flush with the surface 3.
Fig. 5 shows an example in which a cast malleable iron anchoring member has at its top a block portion 30 formed with a throughgoing hole 31 into which the straight leg 20 of the clip is driven and having a surface 32 on which the portion 22 of the clip bears, the top of the block portion 30 being at a level less than 3cm. below the level of the surface 4 of the concrete and the highest point inside the hole 31 being at a level about 1 + cm. below the level of the surface 4. The anchoring member has a leg 33, having a ledge 34 at the top, embedded in the concrete. The block portion 30 has a surface 30A which bounds the recess in the sleeper and is flush with the surface 1 A of the concrete.
