Abstract

A mounting plate (3) for riveting to the side of a saucepan has a raised part or boss (30) accommodating a nut (5) which receives a screw (4) passing through a hole (34) in the plate (3) for securing the handle (1) to the plate (3). As shown the nut (5) is of simple plain square form wholly accommodated within the raised part (30) against the inside face of the latter and is preferably secured against rotation by welding (53) to the plate (3). A pressed metal ferrule (2) about the mounting end (11) of the handle (1) is of box section for locating engagement about the raised part (30) and has its adjacent edges joined by a lap joint (22) which is secured together such as by spot welding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Handle mounting assembly The object of this invention is to provide an improved handle mounting assembly especially for the handles of such hollow-ware as saucepans, frying pans or similar utensils whereby a secure and safe mounting is simply obtained and which is capable of inexpensive manufacture with ease of fitting, e.g. by conventional riveted attachment to a saucepan or the like. This and other practical advantages will be apparent from the following disclosure.
According to the invention a handle mounting assembly is characterised by a mounting plate adapted to be riveted or otherwise secured to the exterior side wall of a saucepan or similar utensil, said plate having a raised portion or boss accommodating within it a nut for receiving a screw passed through a hole in the raised part or boss in securing a handle to the plate.
A practical example of the handle mounting is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an axial plane section of the assembled handle mounting, Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the inside face of the mounting plate and with the handle detached from it, and Figure 3 is a further detail perspective view of the mounting plate and ferrule.
Part of the handle is shown at 1 and is of the usual handgrip form at 10 moulded in suitable plastics material (but which may be of other suitable material such as wood) and is provided with a mounting end part 11, e.g. of generally square or similar rectangular cross section for insertion in a ferrule 2 of corresponding box section form.
The forward end of the ferrule 2 locates about a pressed up raised portion or boss 30 of the mounting plate 3 which is adapted to be riveted at the holes 31 to the exterior side wall of a saucepan or similar utensil in the conventional manner. However it may be otherwise secured to the side wall.
The boss 30 is formed in relation to the plate 3 and the forward end 20 of the ferrule 2 is shown inclined as required for obtaining the usual inclination of the handle 1 in relation to the side wall of the utensil when the mounting end part 11 of the handle 1 is inserted in the ferrule 2 and secured by a screw 4 passing along a bore 14 in the mounting end part 11 and through a hole 34 in the boss 30 to engage a nut 5 positioned against the inside face of the boss 30.
In accordance with this invention the positioning of the nut 5 at the inside face of the boss 30 is such that there is a very high degree of resistance against pull out of the nut 5 through the boss 30 when the screw 4 is tightened to firmly secure the handle 1 in the ferrule 2 and to the plate 3.
As shown in Figure 2 a simple square form of nut 5 may be employed which is preferably non-rotatably secured such as by welding to the boss 30 for assembly purposes. Thus the nut 5 can be welded adjacent its corners at 53 to the boss 30 e.g. by the use of tubular welding electrodes.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention adjacent edges of the ferrule pressing when the latter is formed to the box section are secured together by a lap joint 22 at the underpart of the ferrule and which may be welded e.g. by spot welding. This simply and effectively provides a secure joint of neat appearance.
In addition to its high strength the mounting assembly provided by the plate 3 and nut 5 is of simple and cheap construction which can be quickly produced and which enables assembly time and hence production costs to be kept to aminimum.
Furthermore the advantage of screw fixing of the handle 1 is retained for tightening or removal purposes.
1. A handle mounting assembly for a hollowware handle characterised by a mounting plate adapted to be riveted or otherwise secured to the exterior side wall of a saucepan or similar utensil, said plate having a raised portion or boss accommodating within it a nut for receiving a screw passed through a hole in the raised part or boss in securing a handle to the plate.
2. A handle mounting assembly according to claim 1 wherein the nut is wholly accommodated within the raised part or boss against the inside face of the latter.
3. A handle mounting assembly according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the nut is secured against rotation such as by welding to the raised part or boss within the latter.
4. A handle mounting assemblyfora hollowware handle substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. A handle mounting assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein a ferrule about the handle for locating engagement about the exterior of the raised part or boss of the mounting plate consists of a metal pressing formed to a box section and of which adjacent edges thereof are jointed together by a lap joint.
6. A handle mounting assembly according to claim 5 wherein the lap joint is secured together such as by welding, e.g. spot welding.
