Abstract
A stackable container assembled from a blank of a sheet material, for example corrugated board, includes a base and upstanding sides and ends, the sides and part of the ends having double thickness and the ends having extension pieces which confront the sides and provide corner bracing elements which each include a support tab (26, Fig. 1) and a bracing tab (28, Fig. 1) extending diagonally across the corner, the bracing tab being supported by the support tab. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to containers
The invention relates to containers made from sheet material, such as corrugated or fluted cardboard.
It is known to provide cardboard containers for the storage of goods, and it has become desirable in recent years that containers used to transport goods should also be adaptable at retail outlets to display the goods to their advantage. A desirable requirement of such packages is that they permit one package to be stacked on top of another without crushing, even if the goods inside the package are not themselves rigid. Generally speaking packages which have permitted all these functions have required considerable modification to convert them from a form in which they can be stacked into a form where the goods can be attractiveiy displayed.
The present invention provides in one of its aspects a container made from sheet material having a base, side and end portions upstanding from the base, the side portions or the end portions having extension pieces overlapping the end portions or the side portions respectively or vice versa, and having one or more bracing element extending across corner regions of the container.
In a preferred embodiment the upstanding side portions are shorter than and overlap the extension pieces of the upstanding end portions and the bracing elements are provided on the end portions, preferably on the extension pieces.
Desirably the bracing elements are folded from the material of the extension pieces, preferably folded along vertical fold lines from the extension pieces. The bracing elements may each comprise two tabs, a lowermost support tab and an upper most bracing tab, an upper edge of the support tab supporting a lower edge of a respective bracing tab. Each bracing tab preferably extends diagonally across a respective corner of the container.
Advantageously the side portions are made from a double thickness of material, this being achieved by longitudinal fold on each side portion.
At least one end portion may have a removable section, between the corners of the container, for display purposes. In a most preferred embodiment the end portions, and preferably also the extension pieces, over part of their area have a double thickness of sheet material, this being achieved by folding of vertical edge regions of the end portions along vertical fold lines. Preferably the bracing elements are provided by material from this double thickness region.
The invention also provides in another aspect, a flat for making a container from sheet material, the flat comprising a base, side and end portions foldable upwardly from the base the side portions or the end portions having extension pieces foldable therefrom and one or more bracing elements which extend across corner regions of the container when the end portions and the side portions are folded upwardly from the base so that the side or end portions overlap the extension pieces or vice versa.
Preferably the bracing elements are folded from the material of extension pieces on the end portions, and the end portions are taller than the side portions. Desirably the bracing elements comprise two tabs, an upper bracing tab and a lower support tab, the tabs being folded from the end portions at corner regions thereof along staggered fold lines so that an upper edge of each support tab suports a lower edge of a respective bracing tab. The said tabs are preferably folded from a double thickness region of the extension pieces. The term 'flat' used herein means a partly assembled blank.
The side portions are preferably made from a double thickness of material by means of a longitudinal fold.
The invention provides in a further one of its aspects a blank for making a container as hereinbefore described.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a cardboard blank for making a container according to the invention,
Fig. 2 shows the blank of Fig. 1 having been folded along certain lines,
Fig. 3 shows the blank of Fig. 2 having been further folded,
Fig. 4 shows a detailed view of an enlarged scale of part of the blank of Figs. 1-3 when further folded, and
Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of a finished container made from the blank shown in Figs.
1 4.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 comprises a base 10, side portions 12 and end portions 14. Fold lines X are provided around the perimeter of the base by means of which side portions 1 2 and end portions 14 may be folded upwardly from the base. Each side portion 1 2 has a longitudinal fold Y dividing the portion substantially into two halves, one half of which is provided with a glue line 20. The side portions 12 are separated from end portions 14 by transverse cuts 22 which extend from the outside of the blank to points A a short way from each corner in on one of the respective end edges of the base. Each side portion is folded inwardly along fold lines B-B to make a double thickness side portion with the two thicknesses, glued together by the glue line 20.Each end portion has two extension pieces 24 these again provided by a fold line D-D having on one side of the fold line a portion of the glue line 20 so that when these pieces are folded about the line D-D a double thickness is produced and the blank is then a flat as shown in Fig. 2. The outermost end of each extension piece 24 is divided into two separate elements 26 and 28 the former providing a support tab and the latter a bracing tab when the container is fully erected.
The blank folded as shown in Fig. 2 is further erected by folding the extension pieces 24 along lines E-E after ensuring that the bracing tabs 28 are not folded along E-E but are held clear during the folding procedure. The bracing tabs at this stage lie diagonally across corners formed between the folded portions of the extension pieces and the end portions. This is shown in Fig.
4 which is a detailed view of the lower right hand corner as viewed in Fig. 2. One of the end portions is provided with a removable panel 30, this panel being partially cut through by a non-continuous cut 32. This leaves portions which are not cut through so that they can hold the panel in place until it is desired to remove it. The support tabs 26 and bracing tabs 28 at the end of the container having the removable panel 30 are cut away so that when the panel is removed access to the container is not hindered by the said tabs.
The final erection of the container is effected by folding the double thickness side portions upwards and securing them at corners to portions of respective extension pieces by means of glue spots 36 shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the finished container is shown in Fig. 5. It will be seen that the bracking tabs provide corner reinforcement and that the goods are accessible from two sides and one end, upon removal of the end panel 30.
The material used is cardboard having a flute running transversly as viewed in Fig. 1. Any suitable sheet material may be used, however.
The flat may be made compact for transportation or storage by folding the end portions underneath the base and side portions. The material from which the container is made may be printed at the blank stage, and by virtue of the overlapped side portions a large printed area is provided.
Whilst endeavouring the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
