Abstract

End frame members 10 are provided with welded-on sockets 12. A longitudinal member 16 is equipped with transverse rods 18 receivable in the sockets 12. Seats 20 each have a supporting member 22 secured to the underside with transverse rods 24 receivable in the ends of transverse members 26 of the end frame members 10. A table top 30 comprises three planks bolted to angle irons 32 which engage with the outward edges of the end frame members 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Table and seat combinations The invention relates to table and seat combinations which are particularly suitable as outdoor furniture for gardens and picnic areas.
Such combinations are of course generally known, but often made of timber throughout and so heavy and expensive, or of metal in which case they are easily bent and corroded.
A combination according to the invention comprises end frame members provided with connecting sockets, a longitudinal member equipped with transverse rods receivable in such sockets, and seats having transverse rods receivable in other such sockets. A tape top is preferably provided with transverse angle irons for engagement with the outward edges of the end frame members. Such a combination is easily assembled and collapsible into a flat pack of component parts.
The end frame members preferably each comprise two legs, a transverse top member for supporting the table top and bearing connecting sockets, and a transverse member for supporting the seats. All the frame members, that is the end frame members and the longitudinal member, and the connecting sockets, are preferably made of tubular metal, more preferably of 12 or 14 gauge mild steel of one inch (2.54 cm) square cross section. The transverse rods are most preferably similar and of three quarter inch (1.9 cm) cross section which fit closely in the sockets and tube ends.
The sockets are preferably welded on the inward faces the transverse top members, and the transverse members for supporting the seats are preferably welded on the inward faces of the legs, so that the spacing between the sockets and tube ends of the transverse members on opposed end frame members are the same. This makes it possible for the longitudinal member to be identical to a support member secured to the underside of a seat for engagement in the tube ends of the transverse members. The assembly can be made permanent by bolting the seats and/or table top into the corresponding supporting members.
Accessories may be provided for by a hole or holes through the table top for an umbrella shaft which may be introduced in a central or off-set position. A canopy may be similarly mounted, and a melamine or like plastics material finish may be provided for the table top. Advertisements can be applied to any of these items.
Drawing Figure 1 is an exploded view of a combination according to the invention. End frame members 10 are provided with connecting sockets 12 welded to the inward faces of top transverse members 14. A longitudinal member 1 6 is equipped with transverse rods 1 8 receivable in the sockets 1 2. Seats 20 each have a support member 22 secured to the underside; the support member 22 being identical to the longitudinal member 1 6 and equipped with transverse rods 24 receivable in the ends of transverse members 26 of the end frame members 10. A table top 30 comprises three planks bolted to transverse angle irons 32 which engage with the outward edges of the end frame members 10.
1. A table and seat combination comprising end frame members provided with connecting sockets, a longitudinal member equipped with transverse rods receivable in such sockets, and seats having transverse rods receivable in other such sockets.
2. A combination according to claim 1 including a table top with transverse angle irons for engagement with the outward edges of the end frame members.
3. A combination according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the end frame members each comprise two legs, a transverse top member for supporting the table top and bearing connecting sockets, and a transverse member for supporting the seats.
4. A combination according to any preceding claim in which all frame members and connecting sockets are made of tubular metal.
5. A combination according to claim 4 in which the tubular metal is of square cross section.
6. A combination according to claim 5 in which the sockets and transverse members are welded on the inward faces of the end frame members.
7. A table and seat combination as herein described with reference to the drawing.
