Description
SPECIFICATION
Portable gas-heated cooking apparatus
This invention relates to a portable gas heated cooking apparatus and particularly, but not exclusively, to a portable barbecue.
According to the present invention there is provided a portable gas cooking apparatus, comprising a casing, a dished cover member supported by the casing and defining therewith an air chamber, said casing being provided with apertures for allowing air to flow into said air chamber, a case metal member having a plurality of openings therein supported by said dished cover member and defining therewith a combustion chamber, a gas burner provided in
said combustion chamber, said dished cover member being provided with aperture communicating the air chamber with the combustion chamber, means for connecting the gas burner with a source of combustible gas, and a grill supported by the dished cover member and extending over the case metal member.
Preferably the casing is provided with a hinged cover or lid which can be held in a vertical open position by side shields hinged to the dished cover member.
The cast metal structure is preferably formed of cast iron and the appearance of its upper surface simulates a solid fuel such as charcoal pieces.
The casing is preferably provided with pivotable wire members which can be pivoted between a position in which they form legs for supporting the casing from a support surface and a position in which they extend over the cover or lid when in the closed position and retain the cover or lid in the closed position.
The gas burner is preferably provided along its length with transversely extending corrugations which define gas outlet passages which communicate with a longitudinally extending gas duct which is closed at one end and provided with a gas inlet at its other end.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of the apparatus, partly in section, in its operative state,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the apparatus, partly in section, in its operative state,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus, partly in section, in its operative state,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the apparatus in its operative state,
Figure 5 is a plan view of the burner,
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the burner,
Figure 7 is a view on the underside of the burner,
Figure 8 is a section through the burner taken along the line 8-8 indicated on Figure 6, and
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the apparatus in a closed condition.
The cooking apparatus comprises a metal casing 10 which is rectangular in plane view and has upstanding side walls 11 and end walls 12.
Supported by the side walls 11 and end walls 12 is a dished metal cover 1 3 which is spaced from the base of the casing 10 and defines with the casing 10 a chamber 1 4. The base of the casing
10 and the end walls 12 are provided with elongate slots 1 5 which allow air to flow into the chamber 14. The base portion of the dished metal cover 1 3 is provided with circular apertures 1 6 and located above the apertures 1 6 and secured to the dished metal cover 13 is a gas burner 17 which has an inlet 1 8 which extends into a circular aperture 1 9 provided in an end wall 12.
The gas burner 1 7 is shown more clearly in
Figures 5 to 8 and comprises a lower part 20 having a duct forming portion 21 which tapers towards a closed end 22 and the lower part 20 has transversely extending side portions 23 provided with corrugations 24. Secured to the lower part 20 by welding is an upper part 25 having a duct portion 26 which lies opposite the duct portion 21 and having side portions 27 which are wleded to the corrugated side portions 23 and from a plurality of gas outlet channels 28 along the burner. Near the closed end 22 there is provided a lighting tube 29 which is fixed to the dished metal cover 13. The inlet 1 8 is screw threaded externally to enable a flexible gas pipe (not shown) to be connected thereto.
Supported by the dished metal cover 1 3 is a cast metal member 30 which is preferably formed of cast iron. The member 30 is provided with a plurality of openings 31 and the appearance of its upper face resembles a layer of solid fuel such as charcoal.
Extending over the cast metal member 30 is a metal grill 32 having bars 33 whose ends are bent downwardly so as to be received in holes in a peripheral flange 34 of the dished metal cover 13.
Connected by hinges 35 to a side wall 1 of the casing 10 is a cover or lid 36 and connected by hinges 37 to the flange 34 of the dished metal cover 13 are side shields 38. The side shields 38 are provided with slots 39 which when the shields 37 are in a vertical position are engaged by tabs 40 provided on the cover or lid 36 and which hold the cover or lid 36 in the vertical open position.
The side shields 38 can be moved about their hinges 37 to a horizontal position in which they lie over the grill 32 and the cover or lid 36 can be moved about the hinges 35 to a horizontal position in which it lies over the folded down horizontal side shields 38. This is the closed position as shown in Figure 9.
Pivoted to the side walls 11 of the casing 10 are wire legs 41 which in one positions are disposed below the casing 10 and serve to support the casing 10 from a support surface, and in another position they extend over the closed cover or lid 36 to hold it in a closed condition as shown in Figure 9. The casing 10 is provided with a carrying handle 42. The apparatus form a portable "barbecue" cooking device which when not in use can be folded into a compact form which is easily carried by use of the handle 42.
The dished metal cover 1 3 is formed of stainless steel and serves as drip tray and radiates heat from the gas burner 1 7 towards the cast metal member 30. It also prevents heat being conducted to the casing 10.
The cast metal member 30 is heated in use and given an even heat distribution to the grill 32.
The grill 32 can have two different height positions above the cast metal member 30.
The inlet 1 8 of the gas burner 17 is designed as a venturi to produce mixing of air with the gas at the inlet to the gas burner.
