Description

SPECIFICATION Sign holder for display or planning board The invention relates to sign holders for display or planning boards.
It is already known, that such holder are used for the most diverse display and planning purposes. For this purpose flexible permanent magnetic strips are provided on their front or visible side with coloured coatings or laminations, letters, numbers or other signs. These sign holders are magnetised on their reverse side with poles of alternative polarity and are held by magnetic adhesion to boards made from ferromagnetic material. They have proved their worth in practice due to their ease of production and quick interchangeability with other signs.
A planning system, whereby the display board is provided with guiding elements of ferromagnetic material, e.g. round rods, running lengthwise and/or crosswise, is also already known. These round rods are fixed to the board e.g. by point welding. The sign holders of flexible, plastic-bonded permanent magnetic material are provided on their magnetised reverse side with recesses running lengthwise along the holder, in which the round rods engage wholely or partly for the purpose of mechanical alignment. It goes without saying, that the spacing of the round rods on the board corresponds to the spacing of the recesses on the sign holders. The sign holders are provided on their front or visible side with coatings in various colours which can be lettered.
It has now been shown, that the coloured sign holders according to this system become unsightly after frequent lettering and must be replaced by new permanent magnetic sign holders.
It is the object of this invention to avoid these disadvantages and to create a sign holder on which inexpensive small plaques strips or the like of ferromagnetic or nonmagnetic, easily letterable or similarly information conveying material, such as paper, cardboard or plastic, carrying the required information can be inserted and easily interchanged.
The sign holder according to the invention is profiled at its front or visible side to locate letterable or information carrying plaques or strips and on the reverse side, which is held by magnetic adhesion to the guiding elements, is provided with at least one recess running the length of the sign holder.
If the front or visible side of the sign holder is designed with an open or U-shaped profile, then in an advantageous embodiment of the invention not only the reverse side but also the front side is provided with poles of alternating polarity. In this embodiment the information plaques may be made of ferromagnetic material or of non magnetic material, such as cardboard, which has been provided on the holding surface with a ferromagnetic coating, e.g. iron powder paint. Due to their ferromagnetic properties the plaques adhere to the magnetised front side of the sign holder and are located by the legs of the U-shaped profile.
Alternatively, the sign holder may have an overhanging or C-shaped profile having overhanging lips for retaining the plaques.
Should the sign holder be of a relatively narrow design, then recesses, preferably having a quarter or half-round cross-section, or steps running lengthwise along both edges of the magnetised reverse side are provided.
If the sign holder is of a wider design, then it is provided with one recess near the centre with a V, half-round, rectangular or trapezium shaped crosssection and one recess running the length of the strip at each edge of the magnetised reverse side.
Not only the C-o r U-shaped profiles for holding the information plaques but also the recesses running lengthwise are produced during production in a single process, e.g. by extrusion of the compound comprising flexible plastics and permanet magnet particles.
In an advantageous manner the invention enables the plaques carrying the required information to be inserted as often as required and to be easily replaced by another information plaque. The advantage remains of being able to slide the sign holders held by magnetic adhesion along the guiding elements, for example the round rods.
To help understanding of the invention a specific embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is given by way of example and in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of two sign holders with C-shaped profile on a display board, and Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a sign holder with a U-shaped profile.
On the display board 1 of ferromagnetic material shown in Figure 1 round rods 2, which are also of ferromagnetic material, are fixed for instance by spot welding, at equal distance from each other.
The sign holder 3 comprises a flexible, plasticsbonded permanent magnetic material, such as barium, strontium or lead ferrite powder particles, which have been embedded in fine distribution in the plastics bonded material. The reverse side 4 of the sign holder is magnetised along its length with poles of alternating polarity. Furthermore the reverse side 4 is provided with recesses 5 running the length of the strip.
In the case of a relatively narrow design of the sign holder 3, as illustrated in the left half of Figure 1, the recesses or steps 5 are positioned along both longitudinal edges. The sign holder illustrated in the right half of Figure 1 is of a relatively wide design. Here there is a further recess provided near the centre apart from the recesses on the edges. Furthermore the reverse side of the sign holder can have even more recesses.
The recesses in this embodiment have a quarter- or half-round shaped cross-section. It goes without saying, that the recesses can also have a V, rectangular or trapezium shaped cross section.
Due to their magnetised reverse sides the sign holders are held by magnetic adhesion to the ferromagnetic display board 1 and/or to the ferromagnetic round rods 2.
The round rods engage wholely or partly with the recesses on the sign holder for the purpose of mechanical alignment on the display board.
Therefore the sign holders are not only held parallel to one another but they can also be slid along the round rods.
Both the sign holders of Figure 1 are provided on their front or visible side 6 with a C-shaped profile 7, which serves to hold plaques or strips 8 made from a non-magnetic easily letterable material, such as paper, cardboard or piastic, by means of the overhanging lips of the profile. The plaques can be provided with the required information and can be inserted into the sign holder and easily replaced by another information plaque as often as required. Simultaneously one can insert a protective clear film. The front side of the sign holder can be provided with a coloured coating.
The sign holder 3 illustrated in Figure 2 in perspective view has a U-shaped profile 9. As will the sign holder in Figure 1, this sign holder is also provided on its reverse side 4 with recesses 5.
Not only the reverse side 4 but also the front or visible side 6 is magnetised with poles of alternative polarity. The poles are marked in the drawing by the letters N and S. In this embodiment the information plaques are made of cardboard, which has been provided with a ferromagnetic coating, such as iron power paint.
This coating causes the plaques to adhere to the poles on the magnetised front side 6 and they are located in position and guided by the legs of the U-shaped profile. The plaques can also be made of thin iron sheet. Not only the C- or Ushaped profile for holding the information plaques 8 but also the recesses 5 on the reverse side 4 of the sign holder 3 are formed during the production of the sign holders in a single process, e.g. by extrusion of the mixture of flexible plastics and permanent magnetic particles.
A hook-shaped profile with anchoring lips can be provided instead of the C-shaped profile for holding the plaques.
The invention is not intended to be limited to the illustrated embodiments.
As an example the display board could also be made of corrugated sheet iron wherein corrugations act as guiding elements so that mechanical guidance of the sign holders is achieved in a simple manner.
