Description
SPECIFICATION
Wrap-around package for light bulbs
This invention relates to a package of the wraparound type for accommodating a plurality of uniform articles and is particularly, although not exclusively, suitable for packaging light bulbs.
One aspect of the invention provides a package of the wrap-around type accommodating a plurality of articles such as light bulbs, which package is formed from a single blank of paperboard and comprises a top wall, a bottom wall, and a pair of spaced side walls extending between the top and bottom walls so as to form a sleeve in which the top and bottom walls are substantially parallel to one another, and an internal partition panel extending the length of the sleeve substantially parallel to and adjacent the bottom wall and spanning the space between said side wails, the top wall being formed with a plurality of apertures through each of which apertures a terminal stem portion of a bulb projects externally of the package, the internal partition panel also being formed with a plurality of apertures in register with respective ones of the apertures in said top wall and each of which receives a part of the glass enclosure of respective ones of the bulbs, each side edge of the internal partition panel having hinged thereto an inner panel which extends along a part of the internal face of the side wall adjacent thereto whereby both side walls have a double-ply thickness of material over at least a part of their height.
Another aspect of the invention provides a package of the wrap-around type accommodating a plurality of light bulbs, which package is formed from a single blank of paperboard and comprises a top wall, a bottom wall, and a pair of spaced side walls extending between the top and bottom walls so as to form a sleeve in which the top and bottom walls are substantially parallel to one another, and an internal partition panel extending the length of the sleeve substantially parallel to and adjacent the bottom wall and spanning the space between said side walls, the internal partition panel being formed with a plurality of apertures each of which receives a part of respective ones of the bulbs each side edge of the internal partition panel having hinged thereto an inner panel which extends along a part of the internal face of the side wall adjacent thereto whereby both side walls have a double-ply thickness of material over at least a part of their height.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure lisa plan view of a blank from which a first package according to the invention is formed,
Figure 2 is a plan view of a second blank from which another package according to the invention is formed,
Figure 3 is a plan view of another blank from which a further package according to the invention is formed,
Figure 4 is a plan view of yet another blank from which a still further package according to the invention is formed,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a completed package formed from the blank according to Figure 4,and Figures Sand 6 are perspective views of a further
package according to the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a blank 10 formed from paperboard or similar foldable sheet material and which comprises in series a first side wall panel 12, a top (or base) wall panel 14, a second side wall panel 16, a bottom (or top) wall panel 18, a first spacer panel 20, an internal partition panel 22, a glue flap 24. The panels are hinged one to the next by means of parallel fold lines 26-36 extending transversely of the blank.
The side wall panels 12 and 16 are of substantially the same width as one another (measured longitudinally of the biank) as are the bottom wall panel 18 and the internal partition panel 22. Likewise, the spacer panel 20 and glue flap 24 are also of substantially the same width. However, the top wall panel 14 has a smaller width dimension than either of the bottom wall panel 18 or the internal partition panel 22 so that in the completed package the side wall panels 12 and 16 diverge towards the top wall of the package.
The top wall panel 14 is formed with a pairof spaced circular apertures 40. Apertures 40 are located in register with the apertures 38 but the former have a greater diameter than the latter.
In order to form the package from the blank shown in Figure 1 an application of glue is made to the glue flap 24 and the blank then folded about the transverse fold line 32 so as to bring the glue flap into overlapping relationship with respect of the side wall panel 16. The glue flap is then adhered to the side wall 16 at a location which is spaced from the transverse fold line 30 but which is closer to fold line 30 than to the adjacent fold line 28. The blank is then folded about fold lines 30,32,34 and 36 so as to bring the internal partition panel 22 into parallel spaced relationship with respect to the base panel 18.
Articles such as light bulbs may then be located one in each of the apertures 40 preferably with the glass portion of the bulb seated in the aperture.
Following this the top wall panel is then brought into spaced parallel relationship with respect to the internal partition panel 22 whereby the apertures 38 are brought into registry with the apertures 40 so that the heel of each bulb is located in respective ones of the apertures 38. The free edge of the side wall 12 is then provided with an application of glue and secured to the external face of the spacer panel 20. Naturally the space between the top wall panel 14 and the internal partition panel 22 is chosen so that the light bulbs (or other articles) are securely located within the sleeve.
It is envisaged that the sleeve is sized such that the heel portions of the packaged bulbs protrude from the top wall apertures 38 so that the proper function of the bulbs may be tested prior to purchase without the necessity of removing any one of the bulbs from the package.
Referring now to Figure 2 of the drawings, there is shown a blank from which a packaging sleeve may be formed which is similar to that described with reference to Figure 1 and in which like parts are designated like reference numerals with the addition of suffix "a".
In this embodiment the glue flap 24a is folded back towards transverse fold line 30a and secured to the sidewall 16a adjacentfold line30a. Furthermore, each end of each of the glue flap 24a and spacer panel 20a is provided with an end closure tap "t" (see e.g. the spacer panel 20a) and each end of the internal partition panel 22a also is provided with a hinged end closure panel "p". Once the package has been loaded and secured in its erected condition and the ends of the space defined by the internal partition panel 22a and the base panel 18a are closed by folding inwardly the end closure tabs "t" and end closure panels "p" and tucking in the extremities of the end closure panels "p".
Referring now to Figure 3 of the drawings, there is shown a blank from which a packaging sleeve may be formed which is similar to that described with reference to Figure 1 and in which like parts are designated like reference numerals with the addition of suffix "b".
In this embodiment the glue flap 24b is secured to the side wall panel 1 6b similar to the construction shown in Figure 1. However, the aperturs 38b formed in the top wall 14b are not circular but have the configuration shown and include hinged tabs "h" which engage one end of the packaged article to assist in the proper location of the article within the package. Also the side wall panel 1 2b is smaller than the over all transverse width of the blank so that when the package is completed removal of the articles from the package is facilitated.
Referring now to Figure 4 of the drawings, there is shown a blank from which a packaging sleeve may be formed which is similar to that described with reference to Figure 3 and in which like parts are designated like reference numerals with the addition of suffix "c".
In this embodiment the apertures 38c formed in the top wall 14c are of similar construction to that described with reference to Figure 3. However, unlike that embodiment the side wall 1 2c of the package is not of reduced dimensions but is as described previously with reference to Figure 1 and 2. Sidewall 1 2c includes a tear-away "s" so that the package may be readily opened.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the set-up and loaded package formed from the blank shown in
Figure 4. As shown, each of the terminal stem portions of the bulbs is engaged or gripped by a pair of the hinged tabs "h".
Referring now to Figure 6 and 7, a blank 42 is formed from paperboard or similar foldable sheet material and comprises a bottom wall panel 44 to the opposite end edges of which is integrally hinged side wall panels 46 and 48 respectively. At the other end of the package a top wall 50 also is integrally hinged to each of the side walls 46 and 48 to provide an open ended sleeve. Internally of the sleeve the bottom wall is continued to provide upstanding wall 52 and an internal partition panel 54 extends between the side walls 46 and 48 internally of the sleeve integral with the upstanding wall 52. The internal partition panel 54 is secured to side wall 48 by means of a glue flap 56.
The internal partition panel 54 is formed with two spaced circular apertures 58, 60 respectively and as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings each aperture receives a light bulb such that the stem of the bulb extends downwardly from the internal partition panel towards the base panel 44. Thus, the bulb is held suspended by the internal partition panel 54 without either end of the bulb being in contact with either of the base panel 44 or the top panel 50.
Any of the packages described may include means by which the package can be suspended at point of sale.
