Abstract
A spray nozzle has a deflector (5) floatably supported by a jet issuing from an orifice (3) and mounted on a rod (4) extending though the orifice. The rod diameter is greater than 1/4 but less than 9/10 of the diameter. of the orifice. The defector includes a conically shaped deflecting surface (6) facing the nozzle orifice. The largest diameter of the surface is greater than the diameter of the orifice. Also, the nozzle body (1) has a deflecting surface (9) on its face surrounding the orifice, and the rod (4) has an integral stop (11) at its inner end to limit its axial movement. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A spray nozzle
This invention relates to a spray nozzle of the
kind in which the a nozzle body has an axial outlet
orifice through which the fluid emerges in the form of a jet and a floatingly mounted deflector disposed above, in alignment with, and adjacent the nozzle orifice so that the jet issuing therefrom impinges on the deflector, the deflector being
movable axially and laterally with respect to the nozzle. Such a device will hereinafter be designated as a spray nozzle of the kind defined.
A spray nozzle of this kind is described and claimed in Israel Patent 61186 in which, as is claimed, the deflector is constituted by a cupshaped member having an open end supported close to and in alignment with the orifice so as to be impinged upon by a jet issuing therefrom, this cup-shaped member is floatingly mounted with respect to the nozzle so as to be movable both in a lateral direction with respect to the orifice and in an axial direction towards and away from the orifice.The nozzle also has means for limiting the floating movements of the cup-shaped member with respect to the nozzle orifice, the open end of the cup-shaped member facing the orifice being defined by a thin wall of which the thickness is a small fraction of the diameter of its open end, the inner diameter of the cup-shaped member being slightly larger than the sum of the outlet orifice diameter and the maximum lateral movement permitted by the limiting means.
This spray nozzle has several disadvantages.
Owing to the fact that the wall of the cup-shaped member is very thin and its dimensions must be exact, its production is expensive, the water distribution is poor and it undergoes rapid wear due to uncontrolled vibrations. Furthermore, it tends to break under stresses which exist in the field and also tends to be clogged by insects and dirt. Moreover, the deflection of the fluid from the deflector onto the nozzle body is almost perpendicular whereby a great deal of the energy of the jet flow is lost, reducing its spraying range.
It is the general object of the present invention to overcome these disadvantages and to provide a nozzle which owing to the construction of both the deflector and the nozzle body is inexpensive in production, has a long, very reliable service life and provides smooth water distribution for longer ranges than is possible with the known sprinklers of this type. Furthermore, owing to the fact that its construction is not limited to small parts with rigid tolerances it is possible to provide such a spray nozzle in various dimensions for specific requirements in the field.
The invention consists in a spray nozzle of the kind defined wherein the deflector is mounted on a rod extending through the nozzle orifice, and is characterised in that the diameter of the rod is greater than 1/4 of the diameter of the orifice but
less than 9/10 of it; the deflector includes a
conically shaped deflecting surface opposite the
nozzle orifice; the larger diameter of the surface
facing the nozzle body and being greater than the
diameter of the orifice, the nozzle body having a
deflecting surface on its upper face surrounding
the orifice, and the rod having integral limiting
means at its bottom to limit its vertical movement.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-section of a spray nozzle according to the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are partial vertical sections of two further embodiments of the nozzle body with its deflecting surface.
Figures 4 and 5 show in vertical section two further embodiments of the deflector.
As shown in Fig. 1 the spray nozzle comprises a
nozzle body 1 having an axial bore 2 at the top , which is a nozzle orifice 3 through which the fluid emerges in the form of a jet, and through which there extends a rod 4 carrying the deflector 5, all as known per se.
According to the invention, the deflector 5 is a cap-like conical body having on its underside a conical depression, of which the walls constitute the deflecting surface 6 whose open end 7 of larger diameter faces the nozzle and is greater than that of the orifice. The deflecting surface 6 merges into a short cylindrical bore 8, which likewise consitutes a deflecting means. The nozzle body 1 adjacent the orifice 3 has an annular deflecting surface 9 which is concave in crosssection, the lower face 10 of the deflector 5 around the opening 7 being slightly convex in a shape to correspond with the part of the concave surface 9, and constituting a non-deflecting part.
The bottom of the rod 4 has an integral limiting
means 11 which on the one hand limits the
upward axial movement of deflector 5 and on the other provides weight to draw the deflector 5 onto the nozzle body 1 when the spray nozzle is not in use.
In use the fluid issuing from the nozzle 3 will first impinge on the primary deflecting surface 6 and 8, by which it will be deflected downwards to the secondary deflecting surface 9, which will guide it outwards. Owing to the conical deflecting surface 6 the fluid is deflected onto the surface 9
at an obtuse angle thus reducing the energy losses which are caused when the deflecting angle is
acute, as hitherto known. Owing to this energy
loss reduction, the range of the jet is larger and
more uniform.
It can be seen that the deflector 5 has thick walls which do not require a particular tolerance
and it is therefore cheap in manufacture and can
withstand stresses in the field. Furthermore, when the nozzle is not in use the surface 10 will rest on
the deflecting surface 9 and thereby close tila orifice 3 so that it cannot be cloggedby insects or
dust or dirt.
In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the surface 9 of the nozzle body 1 is replaced by a flat laterally
extending surface 12, while in the embodiment of
Fig. 3 the flat laterally extending surface 1 2a is
provided at its peripheral edge with an upwardly
inclined ridge 1 3. Both nozzle bodies of Figs. 2 and 3 are constructed to cooperate with the deflectors shown in Figs 4 and 5. The deflector 5a in Fig. 4
has deflecting surfaces 6 and 8 similar to that of
Fig. 1 but the non-deflecting surface adjacent the opening 7 is flat as shown at 14. Material at the outside of the cap-shaped reflector 5a has been removed at 1 5 to reduce its weight and thus its cost. The cap-shaped deflector 5a of Fig. 5 has a conical deflecting surface 6a without the cylindrical deflecting means 8 shown in Figs. 1 and 4. For the rest, its construction is similar to that of Fig. 4.
Claims (9)
1. A spray nozzle of the kind defined wherein the deflector is mounted on a rod extending through the nozzle orifice, characterized in that the diameter of said rod is greater than 1/4 but less than 9/10 of the diameter of said orifice, that the deflector includes a conically shaped deflecting surface opposite the nozzle orifice, that the larger diameter of said surface faces the nozzle body and is greater than the diameter of the orifice, that the nozzle body has a deflecting surface on its upper face surrounding the orifice, and that the rod has integral limiting means at its bottom to limit its vertical movement.
2. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the conically shaped deflecting surface merges into a short cylindrical bore within the deflector.
3. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim For 2, wherein the lower face of the deflector around the conical deflecting surface is of convex crosssection.
4. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim 1 ro 2, wherein the lower face of the deflector around the conical deflecting surface is flat, and extends laterally.
5. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim 3, wherein the deflecting surface of the nozzle body is of concave cross-section.
6. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim 4, wherein the deflecting surface of the nozzle body is flat.
7. A spray nozzle as claimed in claim 4, wherein the deflecting surface of the nozzle body is flat and has a peripheral upwardly inclined ridge.
8. A spray nozzle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein material at the outside of the deflector is removed to reduce its weight.
9. A spray nozzle constructed substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
