Abstract
Camouflage material comprises glass fibre reinforced plastics and an infrared reflective pigment, the material reflecting 30%+/-5% of incident infra-red light. The material may be formed into pultruded tubes.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Infra-red reflective camouflage material
This invention relates to camouflage material of glass fibre reinforced plastics.
Conventional camouflage structural components are made of painted metal, for instance camouflage poles for supporting netting are generally made of painted aluminium. Such conventional components suffer from the disadvantage that the paint tends to come off, particularly during handling -- making constant repainting necessary.
It is a requirement of camouflage that it is not readily distinguished from foliage by infra-red detectors and it must therefore have comparable infra-red reflectivity to foliage. Foliage generally reflects 3035% of infra-red light, and conventional camouflage paints therefore have substantially similar reflectivity.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a camouflage material, comprising glass fibre reinforced plastics and an infra-red reflective pigment, the material reflecting 30% + 5% of incident infra-red light.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of making glass fibre reinforced plastics camouflage material, wherein an infra-red reflective pigment is incorporated into the plastics resin to give the material infra-red reflectivity such that 30% + 5% of incident infra-red light is reflected.
The reflectivity of the material of the invention desirably applies to infra-red light at all wavelengths between 750 nm and 900 nm with respect to barium sulphate.
The method of the invention may be applied to the manufacture of pultruded camouflage poles for supporting camouflage netting. In this method the pigment is mixed into a resin in a predetermined proportion and the resin is applied to the glass which becomes saturated and is subsequently pulled through the heated die to cure and form pultruded tube.
The invention may also be applied to moulded mushrooms for supporting camouflage netting.
These mushrooms are manufactured by the hot press moulding process from polyester dough moulding compound incorporating the infra-red reflecting pigment.
The proportion of pigment required depends on the type of pigment chosen and may be determined experimentally. The pigment used may be any suitable infra-red reflective pigment, as used in conventional camouflage paints. Of course, not all known pigments are suitable for use in glass fibre reinforced plastics and pigments should be tested for their suitability.
An embodiment of the invention is more particularly described in the following Examples.
EXAMPLE 1
The reinforcement for GRP pultruded camouflage poles consists of two layers of 280 g/m2 woven rovings sandwiching one layer of 450 g/m2 continuous filament mat. Also incorporated are unidirectional fibres on the outside consisting of 'spun rovings' and 'mock spun rovings'.
The resin system used has the following compositions:
% by weight
Stypol 40-6034 polyester resin 76.45
Stypol 40-7401 polyester resin 16.15
Zelec UN alcohol phosphate 1.10
* Pigment 5.00
Topanal 0 butylated hydroxy toluene 0.10
t-butyl peroctoate 0.30
t-butyl perbenzoate 0.90
* Pigment type and quantity will be variable according to nature of
material as a whole.
EXAMPLE 2
Dough moulding compound is formulated from the following: % by weight
Cellobond A 711/34 polyester resin 22.5
Benzoyl peroxide paste 1.0
Dietertiary butyl peroxide 0.3
Alumina trihydrate FRF 80 10.0
Zinc stearate 1.5
% by weight Stearine-Stearic Acid 0.5
Polyethylene Powder Alkathane 1.8
Polyethylene Powder Coathylene 1.8 X9 10 Polystyrene Beads 3.6
Microdol Extra Calcium Magnesium Carbonate 37.0
Borosilicate glass fibre 20.0
* Pigment
* Pigment type and quantity will be variable according to nature of -
material as a whole.
The glass content of the GRP was 60% by weight. Although the invention has been described in relation to camouflage poles it may be used for any camouflage glass fibre reinforced structure.
