Abstract
Two of the opposed side edges 4, 6 of a window frame are provided, respectively, with edge-wise extending formations 20, 38 which are adapted to be inter-engageable with complimentary formations 30, 38 provided on adjacent fixed frame members 26, 28. The window frame can be linearly displaced between the fixed frame members 26, 28 whereby the formations are inter-engaged and disengaged from the complimentary formations. When in the closed position, the frame is securely retained providing a good weatherproof and burglar resistant closure. The frame can readily be released to permit normal pivoting opening and closing operation (no detail described). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Closure members
This invention relates to closure members such as pivoted and removable lights, inner windows, doors and sliding panels.
It is highly desirable that doors and windows should be well fitting and secure and various fittings are available for tightly securing doors and windows in the closed position. However, the weather-proofing in some systems is not wholly satisfactory and it is an object of this invention to provide an arrangement which has both improved security and weather-proofing features.
This invention consists in a closure member having two opposed edges each provided with an edge-wise extending formation, each being adapted to inter-engage with a complimentary formation provided on a fixed frame in which the closure member is mountable for linear displacement between a first position in which both edge-wise formations are inter-engaged with the respective complimentary formations, and a second position in which both edge-wise formations are operatively disengaged from the respective complimentary formations.
The edgewise extending formations may be projections extending mutually outwardly from the opposed edges of the closure member, each being adapted to inter-engage with a recess formation provided in the fixed frame.
One of the edge-wise formations preferably comprises an elongate channel section fromed on a leg projecting outwardly from the edge of the closure member, the mouth of the channel facing inwardly to receive a complimentary formation provided on the fixed frame.
The closure member may be a movable frame assembly for a door, window or the like, the frame elements of which may be sections of extruded aluminium or thermoplastics material. The edgewise projections may be integrally formed with the frame elements providing the two opposed edges of the frame assembly. A finger rail may also be integrally formed with one or both of these frame elements to facilitate the linear displacements of the movable frame assembly in the fixed frame.
The closure member may be pivotally connected to the fixed frame to permit pivotal movement thereof about any edge, or about any right line extending between opposed edges of the frame. Alternatively, the closure may be removed from the fixed frame.
The closure may be secured against linear displacement from the closed position by means of a gravity operated, manually operated or key operated device engaging in the fixed frame.
One advantage of the present invention is that the inter-engaging formations firmly secure the opposed edges of the closure to adjacent sides of the fixed frame. Doors and windows may be made weather-tight and burglar resistant without the use of unsightly fittings.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is a plan view, in cross-section of a window in a closed position in a fixed frame and
Figure 2 is a partial side elevation in cross section about the line Il-Il of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a window shown generally by numeral 2 has opposed side frame elements 4 and 6 and transverse elements 8 and
10 all of extruded aluminium. Each element has a glazing channel 12 retaining the glazing member 14.
The element 4 has shoulders 16 provided with profiled grooves 18 and a pair of outwardly extending legs 20 constituting an edge-wise extending formation. The opposed side frame element 6 has an outwardly turned leg 22 formed with an inwardly facing channel section 24.
The window 2 is mounted for linear sliding movement between fixed frame elements 26 and 28. The element 26 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 30 constituting a complimentary formation adapted to inter-engage with the legs 20 of frame element 4. The fixed frame element 28 is provided with a leg 32 formed with a channel section 34, constituting a recess formation, the side portion of which, 36, constitutes a complimentary formation interengageable with channel section 24 of the frame element 6. The side portion 36 is further provided with opposed weather strip grooves 38 mounting a weather strip for sealing engagement in the channel section 24.
Further weather strip grooves 40 are provided on the fixed frame 26, and weather strip grooves 42 are provided in the transverse elements 8 and
10, as shown in Figure 2 to provide a sliding seal against transverse fixed frame element 46, 48. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the window 2 is in a position of inter-engagement with the fixed frame elements 26 and 28. In operation, the window 2 may be linearly displaced, by use of finger rail 44, towards the frame element 28. The legs 20 are withdrawn from the longitudinal slot 30 of the fixed frame element 26 and the channel section is released from inter-engagement with the side portion 36. The window 2 may then be pivotally moved by means of pivots, not shown, in a direction substantially transverse to the plane of window 2.
1. A closure member having two opposed edges each provided with an edge-wise extending formation, each being adapted to inter-engage with a complimentary formation provided on a fixed frame in which the closure member is mountable for linear displacement between a first position in which both edge-wise formations are inter-engaged with the respective complimentary formations, and a second position in which both edge-wise formations are operatively disengaged from the respective complimentary formations.
2. A closure member as claimed in claim 1 in

Claims (5)
2. A closure member as claimed in claim 1 in which the edge-wise extending formations are projections extending mutually outwardly from the opposed edges of the closure member, each being adapted to inter-engage with a recess formation provided in the fixed frame.
3. A closure member as claimed in claim 2 in which one of the edge-wise extending formations comprises an elongate channel section formed on a leg projecting outwardly from the edge of the closure member, the mouth of the channel facing inwardly to receive a complimentary formation provided on the fixed frame.
4. A closure member as claimed in any preceding claim in which the closure member is pivotally mounted on the fixed frame to allow pivotal movement of the closure member in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of linear displacement.
5. A closure member substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
