Abstract

The cover (10) comprises two rigid parts (11, 12) connected together by a hinge (13). The parts (11, 12) are shaped so that when closed they conform generally to the shape of a golf club head, particularly a "wood" and preferably the hinge is of a type which closes the two parts with a snap action. Thumb catches (21) are provided for ease of opening and a neck portion (17) is flared towards its open end to divert water which drips from the cover away from the shaft of the club. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Agolfclub head cover This invention relates to a golf club head cover, particularly but not exclusively for clubs of the kind known as "woods".
Known covers made of plastics material, knitted textile material and leather are slipped overthe head of the club and have a tendency to come off accidentally.
According to the present invention, there is provided a golf club head cover comprising two rigid or substantially rigid parts hingedly connected together and shaped such thatwhen closedthe parts conform generallyto the shape of a golf club head.
Preferred features of the invention are set forth in
claims 2 - 8.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. lisa front view of one embodiment of a golf club head cover according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a view from the left hand side ofthe cover of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view of the cover when open, and Fig. 4 is a section through the cover and showing a golf club head housed therein.
Referring to the drawings, the golf club head cover shown therein is for a club of the kind known as a "wood". The cover, indicated by the general reference 10, comprises two rigid or substantially rigid parts 11 and 12 of, for example, plastics material, glass fibre reinforced plastics material or pressed metal. The parts 11 and 12 are connected together by a hinge 13. The hinge is preferably of a type which provides that the two parts 11 and 12 close with a snap action and to this end incorporates an over centre spring.
As shown in Figure3,thetwo parts 11 and 12 have edges 14,15 respectively which are of mirror image shape with respect to each other so that the edges 14 andl 5 meet when the two parts are closed. However, the edges may be arranged to overlap one another when the parts are closed orthe edge of one of the parts e.g. edge 15 may be provided with a flange to overlap the other part e.g. part 11 when the parts are closed to prevent the ingress of water.
When closed, the parts define a head portion 16 and a neck portion 17. The neck portion 17 is open at its end remote from the head portion 16 so that the shaft of a golf club may extendtherethrough and the neck portion is outwardly flared towards its open end so asto divert water dripping off the cover in general away from the shaft of the club.
The part 12 has a planar portion 18which conforms generallywith theface ofthe golf club and the corresponding portion ofthe part 11 is of generally bulbous shape.
As shown in Figure 4, thetwo parts ofthe cover are lined with compressible material, esg. a foam layer 20 to protect the head of the golf club and each part has a thumb catch 21 for ease of opening.
Instead of providing a snap action hinge, a normal hinge may be provided and in this case a releasable fastening device can be provided to fasten the two parts 11 and 12 in a closed position.
CLAIMS 1. A golf head cover comprising two rigid or substantially rigid parts hingedly connected together and shaped such that when closed the parts conform generallyto the shape of a golf club head.
2. The cover of Claim 1, wherein the two parts are connected together by a hinge of a type whereby the two parts close with a snap action.
3. The cover of Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the two parts are internally lined with a compressible material.
4. The cover of any one ofthe preceding claims, wherein the parts when closed define a head portion and a neck portion, the neck portion being open at its end remote from the cover portion and being outwardly flared towards its open end.
5. The cover of anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the two parts each have thumb catches for ease of opening.
6. The cover of any one of the preceding Claims, whereinthetwo parts are of plastics material.
7. The cover of any one ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the two parts are of glassfibre reinforced material.
8. The cover of any one of the preceding Claims, whereinthetwopartsareofpressed metal.
9. A golf club head cover substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
