Description
SPECIFICATION
Tying-off or constricting device for accomplishing restriction effects at parts of the body
This invention relates to a tying-off or constricting device for accomplishing restriction effects at parts of the body with a ligature for forming a loop by means of a clasp casing through which the loop can be tightened and be locked in the taut condition.
The known tying-off or constricting devices of this kind, in the case of which the loop embraces the body part and fits intimately thereagainst, serve the purpose of completely constricting and tying-off the body part, in order, for example, to set a syringe or to enable the blood pressure or the like to be checked. Moreover, the ligature is comparatively narrow, for example about 30 mm in width. It is resilient in the direction of its length, in order, during slackening thereof, to achieve a continuous and smooth reduction in blood pressure, and, during tightening thereof, an even increase in power.
There are instances, for example in the case of injuries or the like, where a local point at the body part, for example a vein or the like, must be kept tied-off as a result of injury, in order that loss of blood of undue magnitude is avoided until the doctor can treat the injury at its locus. On the use of the tying-off or constricting devices hitherto known, in the case of which the body part is securely tied-off all around by the loop and the entire body part is subjected to a restriction or stagnation effect where it is tied-off, it is necessary that the loop be slackened again from time to time so that the tied-off body part can be supplied with fresh blood in order to prevent mortification of the tied-off body part.During the time that the loop is slackened there is, however, the danger that the loss of blood at the point of injury becomes too great, apart from the fact that the loop must be repeatedly manipulated at brief intervals, which is unpleasant for the injured person.
The object of the invention is to provide a tying-off or constricting device of the kind mentioned, with which it is made possible to keep local points of limited extent at the body part tiedoff and restricted, while the other portions of the body part, at the periphery of the latter and which are simultaneously embraced by the loop, continue to allow passage of the blood through the blood vessels.
In accordance with the present invention a tying-off or constricting device for accomplishing restriction effects at parts of the body with a ligature for forming a loop by means of a clasp casing through which the loop can be tightened and be locked in the taut condition, is characterized in that there is detachably connected with the ligature a clamping yoke with ribs extending lengthwise of the ligature and forming the sides of the clamping yoke, and in that the clamping yoke includes on its upper face an independent plate component which is provided with means for holding the ligature and is detachably connected with the clamping yoke.
Such a clamping yoke is useful for enabling insertion of the tying-off or constricting device even in such cases when a locally restricted point at the periphery of the body part must be isolated and kept tied-off or constricted, while the other points within the embrace of the loop are not subject to constriction. The narrow ribs result in such a specific pressure per unit of area that a complete obstruction effect is guaranteed and the other points of the body part are not tied-off or constricted with respect to the passage of blood.
Moreover several advantages are attained by the separation of the clamping yoke from the holder for the ligature. On the one hand the clamping yoke and the plate component are used together, both parts functioning as one unit in handling. The clamping yoke is secured in its attitude by the plate component to which the ligature of the tying-off or constricting device is detachably fitted. The complete device can be manipulated like a one-piece component. In doing so the ligature can be detached from the clamping yoke or the complete device just as easily as with a one-piece yoke, so that it is also possible to operate with the tying-off ligature alone. The separation of the yoke from the hold has the further advantage that the holder, i.e. the plate component, can take over a function on its own, namely that of bringing about a flat pressing at a predetermined point of the body part, also resulting in only a local pressure. The device in accordance with the invention can in that way be used much more universally than prior devices.
With it there is no difficulty in being able to go over easily from one kind of use to the other, to suit the requirement of the particular case at any time. The clamping yoke retains its further function, being able to be used as a member for accommodating the ligature wound around the clasp casing.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention, the plate component may include on its side facing the clamping yoke at a platform portion extending longitudinally of the ligature.
This platform portion is particularly of service in enabling the plate component to be used for a flat pressing after removal from the clamping yoke.
The platform portion guarantees this without it being necessary to detach the ligature from the plate component. Preferably the plate component surface facing the clamping yoke is roughened.
This may consist, for example, of ribbing. Such a roughened contact surface guarantees security against slippage.
According to a further feature of the invention, the plate component is supported on the clamping yoke in such a way that it is engaged in a recess in the clamping yoke. In this way there is a secure lodgement between clamping yoke and plate component. This may be made more enhanced by the connection between the clamping yoke and the plate component taking place by means of a snap arrangement. In this way an extremely secure lodgement between these two components is obtained and there is the guarantee that the plate component placed in position in the clamping yoke cannot be lost.
The plate component may, moreover, be provided on its side facing away from the clamping yoke with runner members for retaining the ligature. The runner members are preferably hanger-shaped along their lengths in order that the ligature may be disengaged from the plate component by direct removal, without it being necessary to have to pass the ligature through the runner members.
It is, moreover, desirable for the plate component to be provided on its reverse side, for example on the platform portion, with elevations which extend lengthwise of the ligature and may comprise ridges of triangular cross-section. In this way the ligature is secured against slippage relative to the plate component.
The invention is described in more detail hereinafter with reference to one embodiment thereof represented in the drawings.
Figs. 1 to 3 show diagrammatically the clamping yoke of a tying-off or constricting device according to the invention in plan view, in section along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1, and in side elevation, respectively;
Figs. 4 to 7 represent diagrammatically the independent plate component, respectively in a view in the direction of arrow IV of Fig. 5, in section along the line V-V of Fig. 4, in side elevation, and in section along the line VIl-VIl of
Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 illustrates the clamping yoke and the plate component in the assembled condition, partly in section and diagrammatically.
The tying-off or constricting device for accomplishing restriction effects at parts of the body by means of a ligature which forms a loop and is provided with a clasp casing, includes a clamping yoke 1 which consists of the side portions 2 and 3 and a top portion 4, which portions are integrally connected with one another, and the side portions 2 and 3 having at their free edges a curved shape 1 5 which comes to be situated on the body part to be tied-off. In the top portion 4 of the clamping yoke 1 there is provided a recess 5 which serves for the insertion of an independent closure component 6. The depth of the side portions is selected to be such that there is between the side portions 2 and 3 a space 7 which enables the insertion and accommodation of padding and absorption material for blood and the like.
The plate component 6 has on its side facing the clamping yoke a platform portion 9 extending lengthwise of the ligature 8 and at the other side runner members 10 below which the ligature can be inserted. The surface area and shape of the plate component 6 are such that it can be snugly inserted into the recess 5 in the clamping yoke.
The clamping yoke 1 and the plate component 6 are preferably secured together by a snap
connection. To this end the recess 5 is provided at
the side walls with a projecting rib 1 1 behind
which a tongue-shaped lug 12 on the plate
component 6 can resiliently grip. In this way the
plate component 6 is secured in the recess 5 of
the clamping yoke 1 against coming loose, falling
out, and the like.
The plate component 6 can also be used on its
own as an independent component. It is attached
loosely to the ligature 8 and can be moved
lengthwise of the latter. The ligature 8 is located
below the runner members 10 with appropriate
folding over of its marginal zones. The inner face
of the platform portion 9 may be provided with a
ribbing 13 to improve the hold. The outer surface
of the platform portion 9 is preferably provided
with a roughening 14. Such a roughened surface
comes to be supported on the body part, so that
the plate component remains immovable on the
skin on tightening the ligature. The roughening 14
may consist of suitable ribbing and the like.
The clamping yoke and the plate component
are preferably made of plastics material, and the
clamping yoke may be of transparent material. All
three parts, i.e. clamping yoke, plate component
and ligature can easily be detached from one
another and connected with one another. In that
way the parts can be kept perfectly clean
hygienically.
