Abstract

A blade bone puller includes a thrust applying plate (10) connected by means of a pair of metal bars (12) to a carrier plate (14) and has a double acting pneumatic ram (16) connected to the carrier plate on the side opposite that on which the metal bars (12) are connected. In order that the blade bone puller will be easy to keep clean, the pneumatic ram (16) is totally enclosed within a smooth sided casing. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Blade bone puller The invention relates to blade bone pullers, that is to say to power operated devices for assisting the removal of the blade bone from the "side" of a bacon pig.
Blade bone pullers as previously used have been difficult to keep clean, in particular because the pneumatic ram which has been used to power the device has been surrounded by a plurality of rods constituting a frame assembly. The aim of the invention is to provide a blade bone puller which will be relatively easy to keep clean and which will therefore be more hygienic for use in preparing food for human consumption.
According to the invention, there is provided a blade bone puller including a thrust applying plate connected by means of a pair of metal bars to a carrier plate, and a double acting pneumatic ram connected to the carrier plate on the side opposite that on which the metal bars are connected, the ram being totally enclosed within a smooth side casing, the arrangement being such that the device is very easy to keep clean and therefore particularly hygienic in use.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blade bone puller embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a part sectional perspective view of a pneumatic ram forming a part of the device, Figure 3 is a part sectional view of the ram, and Figure 4 is a view in the direction of arrow 4 in Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings, the blade bone puller there illustrated includes a thrust applying plate 10 connected by means of a pair of substantial metal bars 12to a carrier plate 14.
A double acting pneumatic ram 16 is connected to the carrier plate 14 on the side opposite that on which the metal bars 12 are welded. The ram is totally enclosed within a rectangular cross section casing one side of which has a pair of manifolds 18 and 20 and on another side adjacent the carrier plate 14 there is secured a control valve 22 having a control lever 24. Flow passages extend as shown in the drawings to the opposite ends of the pneumatic ram and the arrangement is such that by the appropriate movement of the control lever the ram can act in one direction or the other to advance or retract a piston rod 26 which extends slidably through the carrier plate 14 and is connected as shown to a hook 28 which can be attached to the blade bone knuckle joint of a bacon pig "side".
Because the pneumatic ram 16 and the air lines to and from its opposite ends via the control valve are totally enclosed as shown in the drawings the blade bone puller just described is very easy to keep clean and is therefore particularly hygienic in use for preparing food for human consumption.
1. A blade bone puller including a thrust applying plate connected by means of a pair of metal bars to a carrier plate, and a double acting pneumatic ram connected to the carrier plate on the side opposite that on which the metal bars are connected, the ram being totally enclosed within a smooth sided casing, the arrangement being such that the device is very easy to keep clean and therefore particularly hygienic in use.
2. A blade bone puller constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
