Abstract

A container has a body portion (2) of resilient plastics material formed with a tongue (4) and a lid (6) formed with a lip (10), wherein the tongue and lip are welded together and form a hinge. The tongue (4) is bent from its normal position when the lid is opened and as it is made of resilient plastics material, it exerts a biassing force tending to close the lid. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to containers This invention relates to containers for facial tissues, toilet tissues or the like.
It is often desirable to have relatively cheap containers, e.g. those of a plastic moulding, which may be used for dispensing facial tissues, toilet tissues or the like and in which the lid is biassed into a closed position.
A container or the like in accordance with this invention has a body portion of resilient plastic material formed with a tongue extending out from the body along at least part of the length of one of the upper edge of the container at an angle (preferably approximately 90 ) to the side wall of the container, the lid of the container having an extending lip along at least part of the corresponding edge, the tongue on the body portion being secured to the lip on the lid to form a hinge, the arrangement being such that the tongue is bent from its normal position when the lid is opened. As the tongue tries to resume-its normal position, it exerts a biassing force tending to close the lid.
Preferably, the lip on the lid extends downwardly and the tongue on the body is therefore bent from its normal position even when the lid is closed so that a force is established tending to maintain the lid in the closed position.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a container showing the lid, partly cut-away; Figure 2 is a scrap top view of the base of the container prior to attachment of the lid, and Figure 3 is a section on Lines C-C of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the body 2 of the container is formed around three of its sides with an outwardly extending lip 4. At the fourth side where a lid 6 is to be attached, an outwardly projecting tongue 8 is formed, the tongue being moulded to extend out substantially at right angles to the body 2 of the container.
The lid 6 is provided with a downwardly extending lip 10 around all four of its sides. The lid is attached to the base by bending down the tongue 8 as can clearly be seen in Figure 3 to abut against the downturned lip 10. In this position, the tongue 8 and the cooperating portion of the lip 10 are welded together at a number of points as indicated at 1 2 in Figure 1.
As the tongue 8, which is made of resilient material, tends to resume its normal horizontal position, as shown for example in Figure 2, the lip 10 of the lid is subjected to a clockwise force biassing the lid into the closed position shown in the drawings.
When the lid is opened, the lip 10 bends the tongue 8 further in an anti-clockwise direction as seen in Figure 3, causing an increasing clockwise biassing force to be exerted by the tongue 8 which is sufficient to cause the lid to close down over the open face of the container once the opening pressure is released.
As an example, the material of the body of the container may be PVC sheet of about 0.5 mm thick. The container body may be vacuum or thermo formed.
Clearly, the invention is applicable to many different sizes and configurations of containers but that illustrated by way of example is considered as being particularly suitable for holding wet tissues and may be a dispenser in accordance with our copending Application No.

Claims (Filed on 16 Nov 1982) 1. A container comprising a body portion of resilient plastic material formed with a tongue extending out from the body along at least part of the length of one of the upper edges of the container at an angle to the side wall of the container, the lid of the container having an extending lip along at least part of the corresponding edge, the tongue on the body portion being secured to the lip on the lid to form a hinge, the arrangement being such that the tongue is bent from its normal position when the lid is opened.
2. A container as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the tongue extends out from the body substantially at an angle of 900 to the side wall of the container.
3. A container as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the lip on the lid extends downwardly and the tongue on the body is bent from its normal position even when the lid is closed so that a force is established tending to maintain the lid in the closed position.
4. A container substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
