Abstract

A cladding member 3 comprises aboard of plastics material with a lip 4 along one edge so that when it is secured to an existing board of a cladding 1 the lip extends along the lower edge of the existing board. Where the existing boards overlap each other widthwise and cladding members also overlap each other widthwise. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to cladding This invention relates to cladding for the exteriors of buildings and in particular to weatherboards, soffitts, facias and the like.
Traditionally wooden boards have been used for cladding but after a period of years they deteriorate to a state where their appearance can not be restored to an acceptable condition.
However, particularly in the case of weatherboards it can dangerously weaken the structure of the building to remove the old cladding in order to replace it with new cladding.
The object of the present invention is to provide a system for renewing cladding without the need to remove the old cladding.
According to the invention a cladding member comprises a board of plastics material having a lip extending along one edge such that the board can be laid over an existing cladding board with the lip extending along the lower edge of the existing cladding board.
Preferably fixing means are passed through the lip into the existing cladding board to secure the lower edge of the cladding board to the existing cladding board. Alternatively the cladding board can be secured to the existing cladding board by adhesive.
The invention will now be further explained by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a first construction of weatherboard cladding in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 shows modifications of the weatherboard cladding of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1 existing weatherboards 1 are shown in traditional overlapping relationship on the exterior of a building 2. The weather-boards 1 are each covered by a cladding board 3 in accordance with the invention. The board 3 has a lip 4 which extends along the lower edge of the existing weatherboard 1 to which it is fitted.
The boards 3 are fixed to the boards 1 adjacent their upper edges by nails 5 and at their lower edges by nails or staples 6 which pass upwardly through the lips 4 into the boards 1. The lip 4 of each board 3 provides an overlap with the board 3 below and also conceals the heads of the nails 5 passing through the board 3 below. Thus the fixings for the boards 3 are concealed.
Referring to Figure 2, the upper weatherboard 3a shown differs from that of Figure 1 in that it is: provided with longitudinal rubs 7 of dovetail cross-section for rigidity purposes. Its lip 8 is also of different cross-sectional shape from the lip 4 of Figure 1. The lip 8 is significantly thinner than the lip 4 and in order to provide the required overlap with the board below, a block 9 locates between the lower edge of the existing board 1 and the lip 8.
The lower board 3b in Figure 2 differs from the board 3a only in that the ribs 10 are of rectangular rather than of dovetail cross-section.
1. A cladding member comprising a board of plastics material having a lip extending along one edge such that the board can be laid over an existing board of a cladding with the lip extending along the lower edge of the existing board.
2. A cladding comprising a plurality of cladding members according to Claim 1 laid over the existing boards of a cladding with the lips of said cladding members extending along the lower edge of the existing boards.
3. A cladding according to Claim 2, wherein the existing boards overlap each other widthwise and said cladding members also overlap each other widthwise, said cladding members being secured to said existing boards by fixing means which pass through the fronts of said cladding members where they are overlapped and by fixing means passing through said lips into the lower edges of said exisiting boards.
4. A cladding according to Claim 2 or 3, wherein said cladding members are provided with strengthening ribs on their rear faces.
5. A cladding member substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. A cladding substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
