Abstract

211,272. Alpe, R. J. Dec. 6, 1922. Universal joints, flexibledisc. The disc is made of vulcanized fibre or rubber and has a series of metal reinforcing-ties connecting adjacent points of attachment to the spiders, the ties having provision for limited longitudinal expansion and contraction under the torsional and axial stresses in the disc. A disc c, Fig. 1, preferably manufactured in a mould having a base provided with cores corresponding to the apertures f, g, is reinforced with sheet-metal ties a, which may be embedded in the disc and may be arranged in several superposed spaced series. As shown in Fig. 7, strengthening-ribs e, serving also as spacing-members, may be formed on the ties a. The elasticity of the ties may be provided by giving them the open. approximately elliptical shape shown, or by corrugating the central part of a plain strip or parallel-sided open link. The open form of link a may, as shown in Fig. 10, have a central bowed portion d, such links being preferably used in pairs enclosing a cushion h of rubber &c. between them; the link may have a bridge d<1>, Fig. 9, across its bowed part d. In a modification, the ties may be united into a continuous polygon or, as shown in Fig. 11, annulus i of zig-zag shape, comprising apertured flats j, alternately to one side and the other of the disc, and inclined connecting-portions k.
