Description
SPECIFICATION
Locking device
This invention relates to locking devices of the type operated by a rotating operating member having a generally radially extending projection which co-operates with the mechanism of the device to engage or disengage a bolt and hence to lock or unlock a door or similar member. Such a locking device will be referred to as being a locking device "of the type specified".
Typical examples of a locking device of the type specified are used in securing hollow frame sliding patio doors for example, and the following description will refer especially to locking devices used for this purpose. However, similar locking devices may find many other applications.
Conventionally, there are two different kinds of locking device of the type specified.
The first and simpler type is manually operated and has a manual operating mechanism which includes the radially extending projection.
Because of the absence of any form of key operation, such locking devices are reiatively smail.
In a second kind of locking device of the type specified, a cylinder lock is used, and is key operated from one or both sides of the door. In a patio door locking device, the cylinder lock is usually a profile cylinder lock having a crosssection of generally key-hole shape including an elongate projecting ridge which houses pin tumblers of the barrel of the cylinder lock. The barrel is housed within the circular part of the keyhole shape. The use of the correct key allows the barrel of the cylinder lock to be rotated and this rotates a cam body, also of generally key-hole shape, which is disposed centrally of the length of the lock. The cam body, which includes said radially extending projection, rotates out of alignment with the rest of the profile cylinder lock to operate the bolt.
From the manufacturing point of view, the production of two different kinds of locking device of the type specified means higher cost than if a single kind could be used for operation in either mode, that is either by means of a key-operated cylinder lock or by manual operating means. Sales outlets also have to keep stocks or both kinds of locking devices at present.
It is an object of the present invention to provide the facility for either cylinder lock or wholly manual operation in a locking device of the type specified, by the provision of a manual operating mechanism compatible with a locking device of the type specified which is also capable of cylinder lock operation.
According to the invention, there is provided, in or for fitment to a locking device of the type specified having an opening adapted for fitment of a cylinder lock, a manual operating mechanism comprising an insert adapted to be inserted in said opening and to be rotatably secured therein, the insert including a body and a generally radially extending projection adapted to operate the mechanism of the locking device and the insert including, or having attachment means for nonrotatably attaching, a manual operating member capable of rotating the insert to operate the locking device.
The insert may have a generally cylindrical body on which the generally radially extending projection is provided.
The insert may be adapted to be trapped within said opening of the locking device by locating means at or adjacent each end. For example, the body may be provided with a pair of radially extending annular flanges adjacent its opposed ends and arranged to abut opposed inner faces of a casing of the locking device when the insert is in position. The insert may then serve to locate and support the opposed faces of the casing.
Alternatively, the insert may be arranged so that it can be inserted through the opening after assembly of the locking device. In this case, it may have locating means such as a radially extending flange at or adjacent one end only, to abut one inner face of a casing of the locking device whilst the other end of the insert may be secured against the outer face of the casing at the opposed side of the locking device by external retaining means. The external retaining means may comprise a circlip received in an annular groove in the body of the insert, for example.
As a further alternative, external retaining means such as a circlip engageable in a groove may be provided at or adjacent both ends of the insert.
The locating means or retaining means may be somewhat spaced from the associated end of the body so that a projecting part of the body can be used to afford a bearing surface to assist in locating the locking device within a hollow section frame member of a door for example.
Preferably, the insert is made in one piece by a method such as investment casting, sintering or machining from a metal such as brass, or as plastics moulding.
It may include a central non-circular bore to form attachment means for non-rotatably attaching a manual operating member such as a lever, thumb turn or the like.
The invention also provides a locking device of the type specified having a manual operating mechanism comprising an insert as set out above.
An insert and a locking device of the type specified embodying the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a first embodiment of insert;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a second embodiment of insert;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view taken on the arrow 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of a locking device capable of receiving an insert such as those shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 5 is an internal view of the locking device showing a profile cylinder lock in position and the lock bolt withdrawn;
Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 5, showing the insert of Figure 3 in position and the lock bolt in a projecting condition.
Referring firstly to Figures 4 to 6 of the drawings, a locking device is generally indicated at 10 and comprises a generally rectangular casing 11 having a key-hole shaped opening 12 which is capable of receiving a profile cylinder lock (shown at 26 in Figure 5) to operate mechanism within the casing 11 of the lock 10.
Operation of the mechanism is illustrated in
Figures 5 and 6. Rotation of the cylinder lock 26 causes a hook bolt 13 to be extended from the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in Figure 4 or 6, or withdrawn in the reverse direction so as to secure or release a door or the like in which the locking device is fitted. In the example shown, the operating mechanism includes a lever 27 pivoted at 28 and constrained between two limit positions. An angled slot 29 acts cam-wise on a pin 30 of the hook bolt 13, which is pivoted at 31 in the casing 11 of the locking device 10.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, an insert is generally indicated at 1 4 and comprises a cylindrical body 1 5 having a generally radially
extending projection 1 6 projecting from its central
region. The projection 1 6 has a waisted shape which can be seen more clearly from Figure 3 of the drawings, in order to allow the projection 1 6 to swing cleanly into engagement with a forked portion 33 of the lever 27 of the operating mechanism, as seen in Figure 6.
Adjacent each end of the body 1 5, there is provided an annular flange 17. The insert 14 is assembled between a pair of walls of the casing
11 which are shown in dotted outline at 18 and
19 in Figure 1. The walls 18 and 19 serve to trap the insert 14 by abutting the annular flanges 17.
The remaining extreme end portions 20 of the
body project through the walls 18 and 19 in the
circular part 21 of the key-hole opening 12 in the
casing 11. Thus, the insert 14 is located against translational movement in any direction but is
rotatably mounted in the casing 11 of the locking
device.
As will be seen from Figure 3, a central non
circular bore 22 extends through the insert, for
attachment of a manual operating member such
as a lever or thumb turn for example.
Using the insert 14 shown in Figure 1, it is
necessary to assemble the insert with the locking
device before securing the casing 11 together.
This means that, for example, a retailer cannot
readily put such an insert into a locking device if a
potential customer wants manual, rather than key
operation.
The insert 23 shown in Figure 2 of the
drawings is so constructed that it can be inserted
after the securing together of the locking device
casing 11. It is therefore feasible for a retailer to
stock the locking device together with separate
supplies of profile cylinder locks 26 and inserts 23 of the type shown in Figure 2, to be assembled at the time of sale.
In order to achieve this, it is necessary for the insert 23 to be inserted through the key-hole shaped opening 21 of the locking device 10. This means that at least one end of the insert 23 has to be devoid of any projections such as flanges so that it can be passed through the key-hole shaped opening. The insert cannot be made undersized for the opening because the latter would not then afford a proper rotational bearing for the insert.
Each end is therefore provided with an annular groove 24 which is adapted to receive a circlip 25 to hold the insert 23 in position against the respective outer faces of the walls 1 8 and 1 9 of the casing 11.
As an alternative, (not shown) the groove 24 may be provided only at one end which is intended to be pushed through the casing of the locking device; an annular flange or other outwardly projecting formation provided at the other end will abut against the outer face of the casing wall.
The provision of an insert of the kind described allows a lock manufacturer to adopt a single standard operating mechanism for locking devices, irrespective of whether these are to be manually or key-operated.
