Abstract
A reversible fan 1 is fitted in a lightweight housing 2 at the other end of which is attached a cowl 3. The position of the fan relative to the opening in the building structure 4 enables one way shutters 5 to be fitted in the housing walls and within the building. These shutters 5 close with positive pressure in the housing duct and open with negative pressure in the housing duct. A further set of shutters 6 fitted across the housing duct, located between those in the housing wall and the cowl, open with positive pressure and close with negative pressure in the housing duct. Designed to perform two functions, the Roof Unit Economiser can discharge room air from a building with its fan working in one direction, and with its fan in reverse can directly recirculate, within the building, high level room air to low level. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Roof unit economiser
The invention relates to a Fan Powered Roof Unit suitable for mounting on a flat or inclined roof or for installing in a vertical wall.
The unit is designed to perform two functions. One function being to discharge room air from the building with the fan working in one direction and an alternative function to allow the recirculation of high level room air to low level with the fan working in the reverse direction.
The invention may be carried into practice various ways and one embodiment is now described by way of example with reference to the attached drawing which indicates a cross section through the economiser roof unit.
A reversible fan unit 1. mounted within a lightweight moulded or sheet metal housing 2. at the end of the housing is attached a weathering cowl 3. The position of the fan relative to the opening through the building 4. is such that lightweight one way shutters 5. can be fitted in the housing wall within the building. These shutters are so arranged that when the fan generates positive pressure in the housing duct they close preventing the passing of air.
A further set of shutters 6. are located across the housing duct and these are so arranged to open with positive pressure on their underside, the underside being the side closest to the fan. Air under pressure within the housing can thereby be discharged to atmosphere. With the fan operating in reverse direction a negative pressure is created in the housing. The one way shutters 5. mounted in the housing walls are so arranged to open with the creation of negative pressure in the housing enclosure, thereby allowing room air to pass through them and to circulate via the the fan. The shutter 6.
located across the housing duct is arranged to close with negative pressure on its underside thereby preventing the introduction of external air. When fitted to an inclined roof shutter 6. across the housing duct would be so arranged as to ensure that its blades would return to the closed position under gravity and side shutters 5. would be located and angled as to ensure they would allow the passing of air into the housing when the housing is under negative pressure.
1. A Roof Unit Economiserwhich can perform the dual function of discharging room airfrom a building with its fan operating in one direction, and which can directly recirculate, within the building, high level room airto low level with the fan operating in the reverse direction.
2. A Roof Unit Economiser as claimed in 1.
comprising a reversible motorised fan mounted in a moulded or sheet metal housing, having lightweight one way shutters forming part of the housing wall, and a further set of one way shutters across the housing duct passage. The whole assembly being protected by a weathering cowl.
3. A Roof Unit Economiser as claimed in either of the preceding claims with the fan mounted in the housing and distanced from the opening through the building such that lightweight one way shutters can be fitted in the housing walls between the fan and the point where the housing passes through the opening in the building.
4. A Roof Unit Economiser as claimed in any of the preceding claims which has lightweight one way shutters, single or multi leaf, mounted in the housing walls between the fan and the point where the housing passes through the opening in the building, which will close with the generation of positive pressure within the housing and thereby prevent air within the housing passing through them, but which will open in the event of negative pressure within the housing thereby allowing air to pass into the housing.
5. A Roof Unit Economiser as claimed in any of the preceding claims which has lightweight one way single or multi leaf shutters mounted across the housing passage at a position between the side shutter entry and the cowl, which will open with positive pressure on their underside, this being the side nearest to the fan, thereby allowing air to discharge to atmosphere through the cowl, and which will close with the creation of negative pressure on their underside thereby preventing the passing of air from the direction of the cowl.
6. A Roof Unit Economiser as claimed in any of the preceding claims which has a cowl attached to the section of housing which projects through the building opening having a weathering skirt or moulded base plate to suit the roof profile thereby protecting the housing duct from the elements.
7. A Roof Unit Economiser constructed and arranged substantially as herein specifically described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
