Description
SPECIFICATION
Fishing rod
The present invention relates to a fishing rod and in particular to a fishing rod of the type wherein a fixed length of fishing line is connected to the tip of the rod. Such fishing rods include those known as "roach poles" and contrast with other known fishing rods wherein the fishing line extends from a reel mounted on the rod adjacent its butt to the tip of the rod and from there extend away from the rod. In using such latter rods, the line can be wound onto and unwound from the reel and accordingly the length of line extending from the tip of the rod is variable.
It is known, with fishing rods of the type referred to i.e. rods having a fixed length of line connected to the tip of the rod, to connect the fishing line to the rod tip by resiliently extendable means.
The present invention provides a fishing rod of the type referred to having improved resiliently extendible means for connecting a fixed length of fishing line to the rod tip.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a fishing rod of the type referred to, or a top section for a fishing rod of the type referred to, wherein at least the top section of the fishing rod is holiow and open at or adjacent its tip, the section accommodating a length of elastic cord within the top section in at least two longitudinal runs disposed alongside each other, a free end of said length passing through the open tip of the section and the other end being attached to said section within the section, the arrangement being such that on tensioning said length of cord and pulling said free end away from the rod tip, each run of cord is tensioned and contributes to the amount by which said free end is pulled away from the rod tip.
Preferably the length of elastic passes, between said runs, around a pulley or other member past which the cord can freely travel.
The pulley or other member may be attached by an elongate elastic member to the end of the section remote from the tip.
It is to be understood that the term "an elastic cord" includes in general any resiliently extendible elongate member of substantially uniform crosssection. Furthermore, by the term "top section" we mean the section of the rod from which the fishing line extends in use, this section being remote from the handle portion of the rod, which is held by the angler when fishing.
A top section of a fishing rod embodying the invention is described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the portion of the section remote from the tip;
Figure 2A is a longitudinal sectional view of an intermediate portion of the section;
Figure 2B is similar to Figure 2A but is taken along line IIB--IIB of Figure 2A;
Figure 3A is a longitudinal sectional view of the
tip portion of the section;
Figure 3B is similar to Figure 3A but is taken
along line IIIBIílB of Figure 3A.
Referring to the drawings the section of fishing
rod shown therein comprises a rigid tube 1 which
tapers gently in diameter from its root end 2 to its
tip end 3. A plug 4 is a friction fit in the root end of
the tube 1, a shoulder of the plug abutting against
the end of the tube, and has an eye 5 within the
tube.
Within the tube 1 is a pulley block member 6
which has an eye 7 and rotatably carries a pulley 8
on a spindle 9. The pulley block member 6 is
attached to the plug 4 by a length of relatively
thick elastic cord 10 which passes through the
eyes 5 and 7 and extends in a plurality of runs
between the plug and the pulley block member,
the ends of the cord being knotted at 1 Oa and
10b.
At the tip end 3 of the tube 1 there is provided
a plug 11, which is a friction fit in the tube, a
shoulder of the plug abutting against the end of the tube. The plug 11 has a through bore 12 and a
lug 13 having an eye 14.
A length of relatively thin elastic cord 1 5 is tied to the lug 1 3 through the eye 14 by a knot 1 spa.
The cord 1 5 extends from the plug 11, as one run
15', to the pulley 8, passes around the pulley, and then extends, as another run 1 5", back to the plug
8, through the bore 12 of the plug and is tied to a
ring 1 6 by a knot 1 sub, the ring being too large to
pass through the bore 12.
A short sleeve 1 7 is a friction fit on the tip of the tube 1 and the plug 11.
The lengths of the cords 10 and 1 5 are such
that normally they are under slight tension and the
ring 1 6 is accordingly held against the plug 11.
In use of the fishing rod including the top section described above, a fishing line is tied to the ring 1 6.
When increasing tension is applied to the fishing line, as for example when a fish takes a bait on a hook at the free end of the line, the ring 1 6 is pulled away from the tip of the rod, the length 1 5 of cord stretching and the line 1 5 being paid out from the tip of the rod through the plug 11. As the length of cord 1 5 stretches, cord from the run 1 5' travels around the pulley 8 to the run 15".
In addition as the tension is applied to the cord
15, this tension is transmitted through the pulley block member 6 tc the length of cord 10, which also stretches. Thus the distance between the member 6 and the rod tip decreases.
Accordingly it will be understood that the amount of cord 1 5 which can be paid out from the rod tip is large since both runs 15' and 15" contribute to this amount and in addition the pulley block member 6 can move towards the rod tip. Also the amount of the cord 1 5 paid out from the rod tip is itself stretched.
When the tension supplied by the fishing line is released, the pulley block member 6 and the ring 1 6 are returned to their original positions (as shown in the figures) and the elastic cords return to their original conditions.
It is suggested that when the ring 1 6 is against the plug 11, the pulley block member 6 may be disposed at a distance from the root end 2 of the tube 1 equal to about one fifth of the length of the tube.
