Abstract

The valve is for a motor vehicle braking force intensifier and in order in use of the valve to effectively suppress vibrations of the spring (5), which loads the sealing element (1), the sealing element (1) is provided with an annular elastic membrane (2) projecting radially outward from the periphery of the element body. The outer rim of the membrane (2) rests, under light pre-stressing against the inner wall of the valve housing (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Nonreturn valve for a motor vehicle braking system The present invention relates to a nonreturn valve, for example of the kind that operates under a vacuum or negative pressure. The valve is particularly suited for use in a motor vehicle braking force intensifier.
Actuation of the above form of braking system in a vehicle can lead to strong vibrations, generally of the spring itself, which make themselves noticeable as disturbing noises in the passenger area. Attempts to suppress these noises by for example altering the elastic constant of the spring, enclosing it in synthetic material or suchlike, only led to insignificant improvements.
The present invention seeks to effectively suppress vibrations of the spring which loads the sealing element, without direct interference with the spring, so that, on operation of a braking force intensifier incorporating a valve according to this invention, no disturbing noises occur.
According to the invention, a spring loaded nonreturn valve for a motor vehicle braking force intensifier, comprises a sealing element urged by a spring against a valve seat in the valve housing, the sealing element having an annular, outwardly directed elastic membrane, the outer rim of which resiliently engages an inner wall of the valve housing.
In valves according to the invention, the sealing element itself is normally circular, although this need not always be the case.
Similarly, the membrane is normally circular although other shapes are possible and the breadth may also be varied. Thus, a circular outline on a non-circular element body is possible and vice versa. In some instances a discontinuous membrane is suitable. The design of a valve according to the invention is uncomplicated, and the unit need not therefore, be expensive. The valve can achieve a substantially noise-free operation of the braking force intensifier.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 shows a cross-section through a nonreturn valve according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a side view of a sealing element shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a plan view of Figure 2; and Figure 4 shows a plan view of a sealing element with a distorted or discontinuous annular membrane.
As shown in the drawing, in a valve housing 3 is seated a sealing element 1, in a spring plate 4 of the nonreturn valve. The sealing element 1 has an annular membrane 2 which rests, under light pre-stressing, against the inner wall of the valve housing 3.
On actuation of the brake, the spring plate 4 is raised with the seal 1 against the force of the spring 5, whereby the membrane 2 of the sealing element 1 slides against the inner wall of the valve housing 1 and causes a vibration suppression of the spring 5, so that noiseproducing vibrations do not occur.
Claims
1. A spring-loaded nonreturn valve for a motor vehicle braking force intensifier comprising a sealing element urged by a spring against a valve seat in the valve housing, the sealing element having an annular, outwardly directed elastic membrane, the outer rim of which resiliently engages an inner wall of the valve housing.
2. A valve according to Claim 1, wherein the annular membrane is discontinuous.
3. A valve according to Claim 1 wherein the radial extent of the membrane is non-uniform.
4. A valve according to any preceding Claim wherein the main body of the sealing element is circular.
5. A spring-loaded nonreturn valve substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
