Description

SPECIFICATION A socket box for telephone apparatus and the like The invention concerns a socket box for plugging-in telephone apparatus and the like which contains a receiver provided with contacts for the plug of the flexible lead for the apparatus to be connected, a slidable closure to the plug receiver, terminals for the attachment of the permanent wiring, internal leads between said terminals and contacts for the plug as well as possibly lead connections consisting for example of a condenser and resistance.
With a known socket box of the character above mentioned the sensitive built-in elements are mounted on the front side of a one-piece socket box. This has the disadvantage that when the cover is taken off they are freely accessible and therefore when installing the box or when connecting the wiring they could be damaged.
Moreover there is a danger that the external wiring may touch the exposed elements of the construction as well as the internal connections and terminals, which could cause damage. It is also a disadvantage that the elements of construction are secured in the socket box wholly or partly by separate fixing means, this involving a relatively iarger amount of finishing work.
The invention has in view to avoid the disadvantages referred to in the known construction, i.e. to provide a socket box of the kind first above referred to, whereby damage to the elements of construction and contacts between said elements, internal connections and terminals on the one hand, and the supply leads on the other hand are eliminated, while substantial simplifications in finishing-off are produced.
This object is attained essentially by the fact that the socket contacts which are adapted to receive those of a plug when the latter is inserted in the socket, the slidable closing member, the terminals, the internal wiring and the elements of construction for the attachment of the leads, e.g.
condenser and resistance, are capsulated in a socket box consisting of an upper part and a baseplate.
The construction according to the invention has the following advantages: all the elements of construction of the socket box including the internal connections and terminals lie protected inside the two portions of the socket-box. Only the actual clamping points of the terminal clamps for the supply leads and the receiver for the plug of the lead for the apparatus are accessible. The elements of construction as well as the internal connections and terminals are thus each secure from risk of damage and also could not be touched by the supply leads, as they are covered and insulated from the socket portions. The manufacture of the box is particularly simple and economical, as all elements of construction have only to be inserted or laid in the respective receivers of the upper portion of the socket box and are there altogether secured in position by the baseplate thereof i.e. no special fastening is required.
A further feature of the invention consists in that the upper part and the baseplate of the socket box have apertures through which the interior of the socket box is partially visible. By this feature it is possible, not only with the installed box, by removing the cover, but also with the box provided with the cover in the condition for use, to see from outside if, for example, wiring terminals for a condenser or resistance have been provided or not. Separate identifications for the two embodiments of boxes (i.e. with or without internal additions), which would increase production costs, are thereby avoided.
It is further provided according to the invention that the baseplate is releasably secured to the upper portion of the socket box by fastening means arranged on the back of the box, e.g. by a screw. This makes it possible to quickly open or close the box for subsequent insertion or change of the construction elements, the arrangement of the fastening means on the back side ensuring that the box can only be opened when not installed. Unauthorised interference is thereby substantially prevented.
A constructional example of the socket box according to the invention is shown on the accompanying drawings and thereinafter described with reference thereto.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the socket box, part of the cover being removed, Figure 2 is a section of the socket box on line I-I of Figure 1 ,and Figure 3 is a section of the socket.box on line Il-Il of Figure 1.
The socket box 1 consists of the upper portion 2 and the baseplate 3, and comprises a receiver 5 provided with contacts 4 for the plug of the lead of the apparatus (not shown), a closing slide 6 for the receivers 5, terminals 7 for the supply leads, internal connecting wires 8 between the contacts 4 and the terminal clamps 7, as well as a condenser 9 and resistance 10 for connection to the supply. The contacts 4 are, for example, formed of resilient wires which cooperate with the rigid complementary contacts of the plug, they are enclosed together in an insulating body 11, which, for example, is held by a moulded locking projection 12 in the upper part 2 of the socket box 1.The closing slide 6 lies in a slot 14 formed from the upper part 2 and a projection 13 of the baseplate 3, and in the position occupied by the socket box when mounted falls under its own weight so as to close the receiver 5 for the plug. Below the slide 6 a depression 15 is provided in the upper part 2, in which the plug is so inserted before the actual insertion into the receiver 5, that the slide 6 which frees the receiver 5, can be moved upwards. The terminal clamps 7 for the lead are, for example, adapted for receiving the supply leads free from solder, screws or insulation, they project from the upper part 2 only with the actual clamping portion and have bent limbs 16 to which the internal connecting wires 8 or the terminal wires from condenser 9 and resistance 10 are attached. The upper part 2 and the baseplate 3 have apertures 17, 18 through which the otherwise completely enclosed interior 1 9 of the socket box 1 is partly open to inspection. The baseplate 3 is detachably secured to the upper part 2 by a screw 20 arranged at the back. The screw 20 engages in a threaded bush 21 of the upper part 2 into which also runs from the front of the socket 1 the fastening screw 22 of the cover 23.
The baseplate 3 has fastening apertures 24, inclined guides 25 for leads inserted from the front and an opening 26 for leads inserted from the back. The cover 23 has breakable wall parts 27 for making openings for insertion of lead wires.
Other fastening means, for example a locking device can be provided instead of the screw 20, for securing the baseplate 3 to the upper part 2, which is similarly capable of being manipulated from the back of the baseplate 3, like the screw 20.
