Description
SPECIFICATION
Baseplates for receiving railway rails
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a
baseplate for receiving a railway rail, including a
rolling operation which produces a plate which has an uninterrupted flat bottom and two parallel upstanding ribs extending across the entire width of the plate and then, without removing a major part of the cross-section of either rib at the middle of its length, a hole is drilled at least part of the way along each rib.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an assembly on a railway track including a foundation, a baseplate secured on the foundation, the baseplate having been made by a method according to the first aspect of the invention, a flange-footed railway rail standing on the baseplate between the two ribs, a first clip having a first portion in the hole in one rib, a second portion bearing downwardly on the top of the flange of the rail at one side of the rail and a third portion bearing downwardly on the top of the baseplate at a location beyond the first portion as seen from the rail, and a second clip having a first portion in the hole in the other rib, a second portion bearing downwardly on the top of the flange of the rail at the other side of the rail and a third portion bearing downwardly on the top of the baseplate at a location beyond the first portion of the second clip, as seen from the rail.
The two clips may be identical, in which case their first portions are inserted in opposite directions into the holes.
Each clip may, for example, be substantially as shown in any of the following British patent specifications:- 861,473, 884,237, 1,213,762 and 1,510,224.
An example in accordance with the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an end view of part of an assembly on a railway track, and
Figure 2 shows a plan view of part of what is shown in Figure 1.
The drawings show a foundation in the form of a wooden railway sleeper 1 on which is secured a steel baseplate 2 having an uninterrupted flat bottom 3.
Two upstanding ribs 4 and 5 extend across the entire width of the baseplate and between them is a flat surface 6 which is inclined to the flat bottom of the baseplate. A ledge 7 is provided beside the rib 5. The baseplate thus far described is well known and has hitherto been made by a rolling operation. This operation has hitherto been followed by machining away all or a major part of the cross-section of each rib at a location mid-way between the ends of the rib to leave in the middle of each rib a recess which is open at the top of the rib and widens as it extends downwardly, in the manner of a dovetail, and which receives a portion of a rail-fastener. It is now proposed to make no such recess and to refrain from removing a major part of the cross-section of either rib at the middle of the length of the rib or indeed at any location along the rib. However, it is considered that it may be desirable to machine off the corners 8 and 9 of the ribs 4 and 5, down to the lines 8A and 9A, over a short length L of each rib or to modify the tools which were used to make the well-known plate so that the corners 8 and 9 do not exist when the rolling operation has been completed and over the whole length of each rib there is an inclined surface of the rib at the position of the line 8A or 9A.
A horizontal hole 10 is drilled part of the way along the rib 4 from one end of the rib and a horizontal hole 11 is drilled part of the way along the rib 5 from the opposite end of that rib. A rail having a flange 15 at its foot and a web 16 is placed on the surface 6 of the baseplate, so as to be located by the ribs 4 and 5.
Then the straight legs 12 of two identical clips, somewhat like the clip shown in Figures 1 to 3 of
British Patent Specification No. 1,510,224 but with higher "front arches" 13, are driven in opposite directions into the holes 10 and 11, portions 20 of the clips bearing downwardly on the top of the flange 15 on opposite sides of the rail and portions 21 of the clips bearing on the top of the baseplate, i.e. on the ledge 7 in the case of the clip driven into the hole 11.
The broken lines show the shapes of the clips when free from stress.
With the corners 8 and 9 missing, as mentioned above, the lengths of material in the clips between the portions 20 and 21 could be reduced without the clips fouling the ribs 4 and 5.
The method according to the first aspect of the invention enables baseplates to be made which are suitable to receive clips as shown in the above-mentioned specifications, this involving the use of existing rolling tools, with little or no modification, which were originally made for producing baseplates, according to the method of the prior art, for receiving quite different clips.
1. A method of making a baseplate for receiving a railway rail, including a rolling operation which produces a plate which has an uninterrupted flat bottom and two parallel upstanding ribs extending across the entire width of the plate and then, without removing a major part of the cross-section of either rib at the middle of its length, a hole is drilled at least part of the way along each rib.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein a flat surface is provided between the two ribs, the flat surface being inclined to the flat bottom of the plate.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein a ledge is provided beside each rib.
4. A method as claimed in claim 1,2 or 3, wherein a corner of each rib is machined off over a short length thereof.
5. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the baseplate is made of steel.
6. A method of making a baseplate for receiving
