Description

SPECIFICATION Aerosol container cap with integral pushbutton and guarantee seal This invention relates generally to aerosol container caps of the type having an acutating key for delivering a spray of aerosol fitted in a diametrical seat provided in the cap and capable of spraying in a direction perpendicular to the cap axis and having a tear guarantee seal.
Actuating key and cap assemblies for aerosol containers having an actuating key in the form of a lever integrally formed with the cap during the moulding operation are well known. The actuating key extends diametrically of the cap so as to deliver an aerosol spray perpendicular to the cap axis and is integrally hinged to a cylindrical inner wall extending coaxially of the outer cylindrical side wall of the cap which is adapted to be hooked below the conventional fixing flange of the aerosol container valve.
This assembly of cap and actuating key hinged so as to form a lever has up to now provided a great advantage with respect to caps in commerical use in that by means of a single moulding operation it was possible to provide the entire cap and actuating key assembly with a spray nozzle fitted within the cap which delivers an aerosol spray in a direction perpendicular to the cap axis.
The major disadvantage suffered by this cap and actuating key assembly resided in the fact that the cap top wall, for moulding reasons, had a surface provided with an interruption represented by the diametral seat intended to receive the actuating key, so that it was necessary both for aesthetical and cap protection reasons during the packing and transport thereof, to apply above the cap top wall a covering disc acting as a top wall proper for the cap. This covering disc is applied later by means of conventional fastening means preferably of the snap action type, which required a separate production step both for the production of the covering disc and for the application of the latter to the cap.
It is also known that the most caps of this type at present in commerical use are preferably provided with a guarantee seal formed of a frangible portion placed above the actuating key and intended to be broken away during the first use of the aerosol container in order to permit the key to be actuated. This frangible portion was up to now provided in the above-mentioned covering disc.
In the Italian Utility Model Application No.
22020-B/80 filed on June 10, 1 980 a cap for aerosol containers has already been proposed which has an actuating key in the form of a lever and the top wall of which is obtained in a single moulding operation together with the cap and key assembly so as to present a continuous outer surface and having a frangible portion intended to be torn away during the first use of the aerosol container thereby acting as a guarantee seal.
This invention provides an aerosol container cap of the above-mentioned type, the valve actuating key of which acts as a push-button and which presents a continuous top wall integrally formed with the cap and actuating key assembly, this top wall being provided with a frangible portion acting as a guarantee seal, this cap also having means for hooking it to the aerosol container.
More particularly, the cap and actuating key assembly according to this invention, of the type having an actuating key fitted in a diametral seat provided at the top wall of the cap and adapted to delivery a spray of aerosol in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the cap through a cutout provided in the side wall thereof facing the spray nozzle and having a continuous top wall integral with the cap provided with a frangible portion acting as a guarantee seal is characterized in that the actuating key acts as push-button and is provided with frangible connecting means integrally formed therewith during the moulding operation and intended to be broken away during the mounting operation of the spray nozzle, said cap being provided with means for hooking it to the the aerosol container.
The actuating push-button advantageously extends only partially in said diametral seat and the cap on the side opposite the spray nozzle has an inwardly extending portion to which the rear end of the actuating pushbutton is connected through the frangible means.
Side walls defining the diametral seat receiving the actuating push-button suitably abut the flange of the conventional valve of the aerosol container and are provided with suitable notches adapted to receive the rounded rim of the valve flange.
Preferably the hooking means of the cap to the aerosol container are formed of an inwardly extending peripheral rib provided on the cap lower edge and which is intended to engage by snap action in a groove circumferentially provided on the side wall of the aerosol container.
These and other advantages of the cap and actuating push-button assembly according to this invention will be more apparent from the following detailed description of one embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the aerosol container cap according to this invention provided with an actuating push-button and a guarantee seal obtained in a single moulding operation; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the cap and actuating push-button assembly shown in Fig.
1; Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof; Figure 4 is a partial front elevational view of the cap and actuating push-button assembly shown in Fig. 1, and Figure 5 is a partial rear elevational view thereof.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown the cap and actuating push-button assembly according to this embodiment. This assembly comprises a cylindrically shaped cap 1 having a side wall 2 and a top wall 3. The top wall 3 is provided with a diametral stepped down rear end 7 to which the actuating key is connected, as will be described hereinafter.
The lower edge of the side wall 2 of the cap 1 is provided with an inwardly extending circumferential rib 5 intended to be retained by snap action in a peripherical groove provided on the side wall of the aerosol container (shown in dotted line in Fig. 1).
Integrally formed with the cap 1 is the delivery assembly 1 0. The delivery assembly 10 comprises push-button 11 and a body including a vertical stem 1 3 having at the lower end thereof a hollow portion 1 4 intended to be fitted on the conventional projecting stem of the aerosol container valve, this hollow portion 1 4 extending through a hole 1 5 communicating at the upper end thereof with a perpendicularly extending passage 1 6 provided in a portion 1 7 of the body 12, which is disposed perpendicularly to the stem 1 3 and has at the front end thereof a seat for receiving the spray nozzle 1 8. In order to permit the aerosol spray to flow out, the side wall 2 of the cap 1 is provided with a cutout 6 facing the spray nozzle 1 8. The top wall 3 is provided at the rear portion of the push-button 11 with the stepped down rear end 7 in the form of an arcuate depression extending up to the rear portion of the pushbutton and attached thereto through connecting points 4.
The push-button 11 together with the body 12 lies in a seat defined by two side walls 20 converging towards the nozzle 1 8 and integrally formed with the cap 1 so that the movement of the push-button is laterally guided. The push-button 11 is connected to the upper edge of the side walls 20 through frangible points 1 9. These side walls 20 are provided with depending projections 24 having semicircular notches 25 on the lower edge thereof which are intended to receive the rounded portion of the flange of the aerosol container valve.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, the cap top wall 3 is provided with a portion 21 connected thereto through frangible points 22.
This top wall portion 21 extends beyond the depression 7 of the top wall 3 along the longitudinal centre line of the seat 20 above the push-button 11.
As can be seen, the push-button 11 cannot be actuated unless the portion 21 of the top wall 3 is torn away, breaking the frangible points 22 so that the push-button 11 is made accessible to the user's finger and therefore can be actuated thereby. This portion 21 acts as a guarantee seal against a possible tampering of the aerosol container.
On the other hand, the push-button 11 which is attached to the arcuate depression 7 of the side wall 3 of the aerosol container by means of the frangible points 4 and to the side walls of the diametral seat 20 by means of the frangible points 1 9 is rendered free to move up and down during the preceding step of applying the spray nozzle 1 8 to the delivery assembly 10 since the force exerted thereon causes the frangible points 4 and 1 9 to be broken away without interfering with the removable portion 21 of the top wall 3 acting as a guarantee seal.
From the foregoing, the advantages offered by the cap and actuating push-button assembly according to the invention will be evident since the above-mentioned assembly is formed in a single moulding operation also provided with the guarantee seal without the necessity that this seal is applied on the cap later in a separate operation.
Furthermore, this assembly permits it to be hooked to an aerosol container by means of the cap side wall which engages the side wall of the aerosol container through conventional hooking means acting by snap action.
