Abstract
A bag (1) of a substantially uniform cross-section has a wrapping (11) adapted to envelope the bag, and two-part fastening means for retaining the wrapping in the enveloping position on the bag. As described the wrapping is a separate rectangular laminated pad and has "Velcro" (RTM) fasteners adjacent its ends. Alternatively press-studs or a slide fastener may be used. The bag is divided transversely into a series of compartments with zip closures. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A bag
The invention relates to a bag of a substantially uniform cross-section. Such bags are known and are made usually of a synthetic textile material which is either closely woven or non-woven and is generally non-absorbent and slippery and relatively thin. This has a number of disadvantages, including that that the bag does not sufficiently protect fragiie objects which may be contained therein, and also does not retain its shape unless the bag is full and the weight of its content is relatively evenly distributed.
The aim of the invention is to avoid or at least to mitigate the above-mentioned, and other disadvantages of such bags.
The invention provides a bag of a substantially uniform cross-section having a wrapping adapted to envelope the bag over at least a substantial portion of its perimeter and at least a substantial portion of the bag in an axial direction thereof, two-part fastening means (as hereinafter defined) being provided for retaining the wrapping in the enveloped position on the bag.
The term "a two-part fastening means" is intended to mean fastening means, known per se, having two interengageable parts, such as a slide fastener, press-studs or the fastening means sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Velcro", the latter being of the type where one of the parts has tiny hooked threads and the other a coarse surface that form a strong bond when pressed together.
In a preferred embodiment said wrapping has a first and a second longitudinal edge, a first and a second transverse edge, and a first and a second spaced apart transverse region, each region carrying a part of said two-part fastening means, the parts being interengageable when the wrapping is wrapped around the bag.
Preferably the wrapping comprises a mat formed by padding enclosed between an outer sheet and an inner sheet connected together along the edges.
One form of bag embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a peispective view of thu bag with a protective wrapping or mat wrapped around it,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the bag shown in Figure 1, with the mat removed, and
Figure 3 is a view of the mat shown in Figure 1 removed from the bag and spread out.
Referring firstly to Figure 2, the bag 1 is substantially cylindrical and is sub-divided into three compartments by internal walls (not shown) which extend transversely to the axis of the bag 1 and the position of which is indicated by piping 2.
Each compartment is accessible through a circumferential part-circular opening closable by a slide fastener 3 extending over 1200 to 3000, preferably over at least 1 800 of the circumference of the bag 1. The bag is provided with a strap 4 attached to the bag at the end faces thereof.
Preferably the length of the strap 4 is adjustable, and the strap 4 is attached to the bag preferably detachably at at least one end thereof.
The diameter of the bag is in the range of 20 to 40 cm, preferably 25 to 35 cm.
Figure 3 shows a mat 11 formed by padding (not shown) enclosed between an outer sheet 12 and an inner sheet 13 connected together along the edges. The mat 11 is substantially rectangular and has two longitudinal edges 14 and two transverse edges 1 5. Transverse regions near each of the transverse edges 1 5 are provided each with one part of a two-part fastening means of the type where one of the parts has tiny hook threads and the other a coarse surface that forms a strong bond when pressed together, in the illustrated example a strip 16, 17 of material sold under the
Registered Trade Mark "Velcro", which serve for the connection of the two transverse regions together when the mat 11 is wrapped around the bag with the outer sheet 12 on the outside, as shown in Figure 1.Naturally, other two-part fastening means (as hereinbefore defined) could be used for the connection of the transverse edges 15, such as a slide fastener.
The inner sheet 13 of the mat 11 is provided with first parts 1 8 of a two-part fastening means, in the illustrated example fastening means sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Velcro", for the attachment of a sheet 1 9 of non-slippery material provided with corresponding second parts 20 of the said two-part fastening means engageable with the parts 18 on the inner sheet 1 3. The first and second parts are elongate and extend so that the first parts are substantially transverse to the second parts.
The material from which the bag 1 is made and also the material of the outer sheet 1 2 and inner sheet 1 3 of the mat 11 are preferably waterrepellent, and consequently usually slippery, and at least the material of the sheets 12 and 13 is also relatively thin. The material of the sheet 1 9 is non-slippery and preferably thicker than the material of the sheets 12 and 1 3. A suitable material for the sheet 1 9 is e.g. material used for towels or table cloths, which is preferably absorbent and provides a degree of heat insulation.
The advantage of the mat 11 is that when it is wrapped around the bag 1 it makes the slide fasteners 3 inaccessible and also prevents access to the contents of the bag when the slide fasteners 3 are not fully closed or are damaged, and in that case also prevents the contents of the bag from being lost from unclosed compartments. In addition to protecting the bag 1 and its contents, which may include brittle objects, from mechanical damage from outside, it also protects the carrier's clothing because any liquid which might e.g. leak from a bottle in the bag could not flow through the openings of the compartments out of the bag and damage the wearer's clothing.
The advantage of the sheet 1 9 made of nonslippery, absorbent material and detachably
attached to the inner sheet 13 of the mat 11, is that it prevents slipping of the mat on the bag and damage of the inner sheet 13 by the slide fasteners 3 and their slides. Also if a relatively large quantity of liquid flows from one of the compartments, the liquid can flow between the bag 1 and the mat 11 and out at one of the ends of the bag. This is prevented if the sheet 19 of absorbent material is attached to the inner sheet
13 of the mat, because the absorbent material will absorb the liquid.
The unwrapped and spread mat 11 with the sheet 1 9 attached may have additional uses, such as a mat for picnic or a baby.
Also, a bag embodying the invention and provided with compartments e.g. as described is particularly suitable and convenient for use by the mother of a baby in that its compartmentalisation provides segregation of clean clothing and/or nappies from soiled ones, and also, if desirable, a separate compartment for the baby's potty, as well as (in its preferred form including wrapping of the kind particularly described with reference to the drawings) a suitable mat, on which the baby can conveniently be deposited on a clean, hygienic and readily replaceable surface, e.g. for the performance of its toilet by its mother or nurse, whilst mother and baby are in transit.
It will be understood that the embodiment described and illustrated is only a preferred embodiment which may be modified in a number of ways within the scope of the claims. So, for instance, the bag need not be cylindrical and may be of a different shape of a substantially uniform cross-section, e.g. it may be substantially polygonal or curved with a flattened bottom.
