Abstract

210,679. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. March 19, 1923, [Convention date]. Joints with packing actuated by external fluid pressure.-In a machine for sealing-off glass tubes, e.g. the exhaust tubes 42 of electric lamps, a gas-tight joint between the exhaust tubes and the pipes 24, connected to the vacuum pump is maintained by flexible sleeves 28 closed upon the tubes by compressed air supplied by pipes 45. Each rubber sleeve 28 is clamped at the upper end between a rigid tube 29 and a cap 26, and at the lower end between the tube 29 and a shoulder on the pipe 24, the clamping being effected by springs 31. The rubber sleeves are kept cool by circulation of liquid through pipes 37.
