Description

SPECIFICATION Connector This invention relates to a connector for electrical conductors and optical fibres.
According to the present invention a connector for electrical conductors and optical fibres comprises two separately formed parts which can be mated together to form the connector, one of the parts having terminations for electrical conductors and terminations for optical fibres, and the other part having corresponding terminations, each of the optical fibre terminations in said other part comprising an electro-optical transducer for converting light signals to elelctrical signals.
This invention has particular use where a combination of electrical conductors and optical fibres are to be connected to a printed circuit board, as the light signals can be converted to electrical signals within the connector without the need for separate optical circuitry being attached to a printed circuit board.
Preferably the said other part of the connector can be directly attached to a printed circuit board.
The electro-optical transducers preferably comprise light-emitting diodes.
The invention is now described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the connector 1 comprises two matable parts 2, 3, one of the parts 2 having terminations 4, 5 for electrical conductors and optical fibres respectively. The other part 3 having corresponding terminations, the optical fibre terminations 7 comprising electrooptical transducers 8. The terminations of the other part 3 are directly soldered to the electrically conductive tracks 9 on a printed circuit board 10.
This invention is not restricted to the arrangement described, as the electro-optical transducers may be in the free part of the connector, and not the part secured to the printed circuit board.
1. A connector for electrical conductors and optical fibres comprises two separately formed parts which can be mated together to form the connector, one of the parts having terminations for electrical conductors and terminations for optical fibres, and the other part having corresponding terminations, each of the optical fibre terminations in said other part comprising an electro-optical transducer for converting light signals to electrical signals.
2. A connector as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the said other part of the connector can be directly attached to a printed circuit board.
3. A connector as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the electro-optical transducers comprise light-emitting diodes.
4. A connector substantially as hereinbe fore described, with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
