Abstract

A securing device (1), for electric cables which can be used for securing together the turns of a coil of cable or for securing together two or more adjacent cables, comprises a flexible elongate member (2) having at least one closed slot (3) at or near one end, an integral head (4) at the other, and at or near the end remote from the head, an integral tube (6). In use, one of the turns of the coil of cable, or one of the adjacent cables, can be passed through the integral tube, the elongate member can be wrapped around the other turns of the coil of cable, or the adjacent cable(s), and the head can be passed through the slot by distortion of the head and/or sides of the slot and allowed to return to its/their original shape to prevent the head returning through the slot unless distorted again. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Securing device This invention relates to a securing device for electric cables or other flexible elongate members (hereinafter, for convenience, referred to as cables), and has especiai, though not exclusive, use for securing together the turns of a coil of cable, or for securing together two or more adjacent cables.
According to the present invention, the securing device comprises a flexible elongate member having at least one closed slot at or near one end, an integral head at the other, and at or near the end remote from the head, an integral tube, the arrangement being such that in use, one of the turns of the coil of cable, or one of the adjacent cables, can be passed through the integral tube, the elongate member can be wrapped around the other turns of the coil of the cable, or the adjacent cable(s), and the head can be passed through the slot by distortion of the head and/or sides of the slot and allowed to return to its/their original shape to prevent the head returning through the slot unless distorted again.
Preferably the integral tube is on the side of the slot(s) remote from the head. Further, the longitudinal axis of the tube is preferably substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member.
Preferably the securing device is of PVC material.
In this case the securing device is preferably made from one piece of material which is folded back on itself and secured (for example, by welding) along major parts of the edges to form the integral tube at or near the end remote from the head. Alternatively the securing device may be made by injection moulding in one piece.
The integral head preferably has a hole through it from which the securing device may be hung.
Preferably the edge of the hole is reinforced by a metal grommett.
Labels may be attached to the securing device to indicate the manufacturer's name, and/or details of the cable or cables secured, and/or any warning details. The label(s) may be printed or embossed on the elongate member between the slot(s) and the head. Alternatively, the label(s) may be stuck on to the elongate member, or a transparent pocket may be provided into which the label(s) may be slid.
This invention is now described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a top view of a preferred securing device; and Figure 2 is a side view of the device show in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the securing device 1 comprises a flexible elongate member 2 of PVC material having a closed slot 3 at one end, and an integral head 4 at the other end. The head 4 has a hole 5 through it from which the securing device 1 may be hung. The elongate member 2 also has, adjacent the slot 3, an integral tube 6 whose longitudinal axis is normal to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member. The securing device 1 is made from a single piece of cut PVC material which has been folded back on itself and welded along major parts of its edges to form the integral tube 6.
In use, one of the turns of a coil of cable, of one of adjacent cables, which are to be secured together, is passed through the tube 6. The elongate member 2 is then wrapped around the other turns of the cable, or the adjacent cable(s). The head 4 is passed through the slot 3 by distorting the head 4 and/or the sides of the slot 3, and then allowed to return to its/their original shape, thereby preventing the head 4 from accidentally returning through the slot 3, hence securing the turns of the cable, or the adjacent cable(s), together.
1. A securing device comprising a flexible elongate member having at least one closed slot at or near one end, an integral head at the other, and at or near the end remote from the head, an integral tube, the arrangement being such that in use, one of the turns of a coil of cable, or one of two or more adjacent cables, to be secured by the securing device, can be passed through the integral tube, the elongate member can be wrapped around the other turns of the coil of the cable, or the adjacent cable(s), and the head can be passed through the slot by distortion of the head and/or sides of the slot and allowed to return to its/their original shape to prevent the head returning through the slot unless distorted again.
2. A securing device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the integral tube is on the side of the slot(s) remote from the head.
3. A securing device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the longitudinal axis of the tube is substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member.
4. A securing device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the device is of PVC material.
5. A securing device as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the device is made from one piece of material which is folded back on itself and secured along major parts of the edges to form the integral tube at or near the end remote from the head.
6. A securing device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims wherein, the integral head has a hole through it from which the securing device may be hung.
7. A securing device as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the edge of the hole is reinforced by a metal grommet.
8. A securing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
