Abstract

The apparatus comprises a base plate 2 on which a container 3 of viscous substance rests, a ladder like device 4 mounted at one end of the base plate, and a lever 8 with one end engaging a rung 7 on the ladder, the other end forming an operating handle and the central portion forming a ring 9 to engage over the closed end of a cylinder 10 of an extrusion gun, the cylinder being positioned over an aperture in a disc 16 lying on top of the contents of the container. Downward pressure is applied to the handle of the lever to force the cylinder downward and depress the disc, thus displacing the contents and filling the cylinder. The apparatus has a mechanical advantage of 4 to 1 and may be used to fill an extrusion gun with grease, sealant mastic or other viscous substances. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in apparatus for filling extrusion gun cylinders with viscous substances This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for filling dispensers with grease, sealant, mastic or other similar viscous substances.
it has been proposed to fill dispensers with grease, sealant, mastic and other substances of similar consistency from cylindrical containers by inserting a circular disc having a flanged aperture over the contents of a container, applying the open end of a pump cylinder or cartridge over the aperture in the disc and applying pressure directly to the cylinder or cartridge to force the contents of the container into the cylinder of the extrusion gun.
The object of the invention is to reduce the physical labour required in filling a cylinder or cartridge by the employment of a readily dismountable apparatus which simplifies the task and also has a mechanical advantage.
According to the invention apparatus for filling a grease or like gun comprises a base plate for receiving a container for the grease, or other substance, a ladder like device mounted at one end of the base and a lever, one end of which engages a rung on the ladder like device and carrying a first ring to engage over the closed end of the cylinder or cartridge of the gun and an operative handle on the second end of the lever.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a part elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angle to Fig.
1 on line 2-2; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus; Fig. 4 is a plan.
In carrying out the invention, the apparatus for filling the cylinder 10 of an extrusion gun such as a grease gun comprises a base plate 2 to receive a can 3 or container of grease, sealant, mastic or other substance of similar consistency and a ladder like device having the lower ends of two upright members 4 affixed to a transverse member 5 removably engaged under projecting members 6 affixed to the base plate 2. The upper end of the ladder uprights 4 are connected by rungs 7 at spaced intervals for engagement by one end of a lever 8 formed integrally with a ring 9 to fit over the closed end of the gun cylinder 10 or cartridge and has an opposite end forming an operating handle.
The lever 8 is formed with a hooked or grooved member 11 at one end for engagement under a rung 7 on the ladder, welded or otherwise affixed to the outer ring 9 with the tubular lever 8 or other handel welded or otherwise affixed to the ring 9 diametrically opposed the grooved member 11. An inner ring 12 is pivotally mounted inside the outer ring on pivots 1 3 arranged at right angles to the length of the lever 8.
The inner ring 12 is provided which rests on the end of the cylinder 10 or cartridge with a central aperture 14 surrounding the outlet from the guaan the closed end of the cylinder 10 or cartridge. A flange 1 5 on the ring 12 extends downwardly to enclose the upper end of the cylinder or cartridge.
In operation a tin 3 or container of viscous substance is placed on the base plate 2 and the open end of the pump cylinder 10 or cartridge is placed over the aperture in the disc 1 6 lying on the top of the contents of the tin or container.
The grooved or hooked end 11 of the lever 8 is engaged below a rung 7 on the ladder with the ring 8 on the lever enclosing the closed end of the cylinder. Downward pressure is applied manually to the handle of the lever 8 to force the cylinder or cartridge downwards and depress the disc 1 5 thus displacing the contents and filling the cylinder 10 or cartridge.
In a subsequent filling operation the hooked end of the lever is inserted under a second rung 7 of the ladder and so on until the tin or container is empty.
The lever 8, base plate 2 and ladder 4 may be dismantled for transport or storage purposes. A lever operated apparatus or kit for dispensing grease or viscous substances or paste type products from tins in extrusion gun cylinders, cartridges or tubes, may have a lever mechanical advantage up to 4:1 without becoming unwieldy and has the following advantages.
1. The operation requires one quarter of the effort to charge the cylinder, tube or cartridge.
2. The operation, therefore, is more precise as more control can be exercised.
3. The operation is as fast if not faster than existing methods.
4. The assembly builds up and breaks down into flat kit form in seconds, without the use of any tools whatsoever, or any screwing action.
5. The apparatus can be easily assembled, used and dismantled by female labour.
