Abstract
A cleaning composition comprising: a surfactant, an organic solvent and a balanced corrosion inhibitor, the composition having a pH between 8 and 12 and preferably a pH of substantially 10.
Description
orthophosphate and sodium mercaptobenzothiazole, the balance being either distilled or de-ionised water or a mixture of distilled and de-ionised water.
The composition may include a trace amount of a colourant and/or a scent.
In one example of a cleaning composition according to the present invention, the surfactant component consisted of 5.5% by weight of nonyl phenyl ethoxylate together with 5.5% by weight of
QUADRILAN MY21 1 (the trade name of a product produced by Diamond Shamrock Process
Chemicals Ltd.) comprising as the active constituent a cationic surfactant based on quaternary ammonium compounds, either alone or with other surfactants such as those referred to above. It has been found that nonyl phenyl ethoxylate and QUADRILAN MY21 1 have a synergistic effect.
The organic solvent component of a cleaning composition according to the present invention acts as a grease/oil cutter. One example of a cleaning composition according to the present invention included 5% by weight of 2-butoxy ethanol and 2% by weight of 2-ethoxy ethanol.
The balanced corrosion inhibitor component comprises anodic and cathodic inhibitors. The balance corrosion inhibitor component of one example of a cleaning composition according to the present invention was 2.6% by weight of triethylammonium orthophosphate and sodium mercaptobenzothiazole.
The pH of a cleaning composition according to the present invention may be adjusted to within the range pH 8 to 12 and preferably pH 10 by the addition of one or more of aluminium silicate, sodium metasilicate and trisodium phosphate.
When using a cleaning composition according to the present invention to clean a gas turbine engine, the cleaning composition is sprayed into the air intake and the engine turned over for several seconds by means of the starter motor.
The engine is allowed to stand for up to 45 minutes and then is turned over again for several seconds to express the cleaning composition through the exhaust. As an alternative to turning the engine on the starter motor, it may be run at ground idle. Since substances that form in gas turbine engine compressors in operation are often more soluble in an organic solvent than in water, the cleaning composition may include up to 45% by weight of toluene or white spirit, the water component being correspondingly reduced.
However, when using a cleaning composition according to the present invention for cleaning the skin of an aircraft, it may be undesirable for the cleaning composition to include a toluene or white spirit component.
1. A cleaning composition comprising the following components, in admixture: a surfactant, an organic solvent, and a balanced corrosion inhibitor, the composition having a pH between 8 and 12.
SPECIFICATION
Cleaning composition
This invention relates to cleaning compositions and in particular although not so restricted to cleaning compositions for cleaning gas turbine engines, internal combustion engines, compression-ignition engines and skins of aircraft.
Carbon and other substances are deposited in gas turbine engine compressors, internal combustion engines and compression-ignition engines during operation thereof. The removal of these substances has always presented a problem but it is desirable to remove them because they reduce engine efficiency and increase fuel consumption. Not only have these substances to be removed but any cleaning composition used to do so must not cause corrosion of the engine and, moreover, ideally should protect the engine against corrosion. In addition, it is also desirable, again to reduce fuel consumption, to clean deposits which form on the skin of an aircraft.
According to the present invention there is provided a cleaning composition comprising the following components, in admixture: a surfactant, an organic solvent, and a balanced corrosion inhibitor, the composition having a pH between 8 and 1 2 and preferably a pH of substantially 10.
The organic solvent component may constitute up to 10% and preferably 7% by weight of the composition. The balanced corrosion inhibitor component preferably constitutes up to 10% by weight of the composition.
The composition preferably includes 60% to 85% and preferably 75% by weight of a water component. Up to 45% by weight of the composition may be an organic solvent such as toluene or white spirit in place of part of the water component.
Preferably the surfactant component is any one or more of an alkyl aryl sulphonate, an alkyl ether sulphate, an organic sulphosuccinate and an alkyl aryl alkoxylate. Thus the surfactant component may be any one or more of dodecyl benzene sulphonate, lauryl ether sulphate, di(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulphosuccinate and nonyl phenyl ethoxylate.
The solvent component may be 2-ethoxy ethanol or 2-butoxy ethanol.
Preferably the corrosion inhibitor component comprises at least one organic phosphate compound and at least one aromatic compound having corrosion inhibiting properties. The said aromatic compound may be a thiazole compound or triazole compound. The corrosion inhibitor component may be triethylammonium orthophosphate and sodium mercaptobenzothiazole.
The cleaning composition may have the following components:- up to 25% by weight of the surfactant component;
up to 10% by weight of 2-ethoxy ethanol and/or 2-butoxy-ethanol; and
up to 10% by weight of triethylammonium
